100 Years of Magic Pins

Kinda sorta.

I'm talking about the magical moment pins (I hope they are the same as 100 years of magic pins). I don't think they had specific games for different locations...you could play games by switching to game mode and pressing the different colored buttons.

Disney just called a magical moment when the pins lit up at different spots in the park. And at the bottom of the pins were 4 different colored buttons and a game/park option on the back. Are we talking about the same pins?

Err... I don't think so... I didn't know about these Magical Moments Pins.. They sound so cool!!!!!!

Here's the official blurb from the back of the original "100 Years of Magic" Magical Moment pin:

"Ride the ride, see the show, watch the parade and let Disney's Magical Moment Pins make you part of the show. Each sparkling pin will illuminate whenever you encounter magical moments at all four theme parks at the Walt Disney World Resort. Collect all five pins and join in the magic!"

I am pleased to say to everyone wondering that the Magical Moment pins DO still operate in the parks. I have one of the original pins ( Epcot "100 Years..") and i have taken it every trip since i bought it back when it was the newest thing in 2002. GREAT great pin...and a great concept! I still enjoy it and it's become one of those things that gets me pumped up and excited about going back to WDW....the day i go buy replacement batteries!

There were originally 5 pins released in the "100 Years of Magic" collection back during that promotion in 2002. All of them were large shaped plastic pins, one representing each park and one featuring the "100 Years" logo. All of them were wired with a mini light show of small different colored LED lights that would go off whenever you came into a certain area in a attraction. Infared beams would trigger the little cells inside the pin and set off a unique light pattern...different patterns for every ride/attraction. It was very cleverly put together. The batteries were standard calculator batteries that could easily be replaced so your pin could be used multiple visits. Even when you were home after the trip, you could still activate the pin by lightly touching the face of it and a slow light show would commence. It was'nt as vibrant a lightshow as in the parks, but it was still cool.

In later years they issued new updated versions of the Magical Moments pins...adding features to them including the game options mentioned in the posts above and more complex light shows.

But ya just can't beat the originals! You can usually find all the pins from this series on E-bay or from other pin collectors. I would recommend getting one if you don't have one as they are a great novelty.

I find the rides i get the best "pin lightshows" in are ( in order)

WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW for those who may want to wait and find out what happens when they wear there Pins on these rides!

El Rio De Tempo ( EPCOT Mexico Pavillion) Best light show by far...and also the longest! Your pin will start going crazy in the finale room ( with all the fiber optic fireworks going off). A must-ride if you wear your Magical Moments Pin!

Small World (MK) Nice twinkling light effect on the pin when you enter the finale room here.

Other rides i have been on worth noting:

Peter Pan's flight: Original pins "100 Years" blink a single colored light as you fly above London at nightime. Mine flashes it's white bulb only here.

Dinosaur ( AK): Same here.....my pin will flash a single color ( white again) when you are dashing through the dark tunnel after the last encounter with the charging Carnotaur. Pin continues to flash until you reach the unload.

Maelstrom ( EPCOT Norway Pavillion): If i remember right...pin flashes a single color again as you exit the room where the three headed troll has just banished you from. ( yellow light if a remember right)

Haunted Mansion ( MK).....again, only a single light color flashes ( white) twice during the attraction...once in the long hall incline and again near the end as you are exiting the graveyard.

Strangly...the pin does nothing in the ONE attraction you would think it would go nuts in......Journey Into Imagination !!! It does NOTHING..it's a lump of plastic here! Same goes for Spaceship Earth too....no pin interaction here.

I have seen in promos at that time how these pins also were supposed to light up and have chasing lighting effects during various nighttime events, mainly parades. I myself never experienced this even though i have been at many many parades with my pin since then. Maybe i was'nt standing in correct proximity to the infared sensors on the floats? I don't know...but not even during Spectomagic will my pin light and i am usually in the direct line of fire from the floats in a front row curbside seat. Has anyone here had there pin activate during a parade? I think now i may have had my pin go off during the old "Tapestry of Dreams" parade...my memory is foggy..

I'm sure i am missing some of the rides that have interactions...anyone here care to add to the list i started? It would be cool to have some sort of list so those new to these pins and what they do could know where to go to see what happens.

Here's another bit of info for those who still have your pins but they don't seem to be working or you need batteries.

Batteries are usually why your pin will not work. Change them out, and do this at home. As far as i know, there is no shop on WDW Property that sells the batteries needed for the MM Pins. Also, if they did you can bet they would cost a mint, so take my advice and stock up on batteries before you leave home!

Okay...the place to get your batteries is any Radio Shack or Walmart. They should have what you need on hand. The original "100 Years" set take size #CR2032 9volt batteries from Radio Shack. You will need to buy two, as the pin takes two to operate. They are about $3.20 each, at least up here in MA. Put them in your pin and test it by gently touching the face to make it light up. If it does not, wiggle the batteries around a little and you should see it come to life eventually. This is for the original set from 2002...i am not familiar with the newer version and don't know if they take the same size batteries or not.

My pin has been put to good use every trip and been through about 6 sets of batteries so far in it's 4 year life so far. It's been rained on ( dang surprise thunder storms...) and bumped about..the paper "Epcot" design inside the plastic pin is all wrinkled due to the extreme humidity of FL ( and a couple of dunks on Splash Mountain one trip..) .....but it still works and for that i am thrilled!

So get those batteries, and get yourself ( and your MM Pin) to WDW!! It's time you started enjoying what you have been missing out on!

Some very recent answers...

So here I am at WDW, staying off property (the room was a gift, and my wife said something about gift horses) and using some wireless Internet to answer my own question:

They still work! And not only do they still work (as mentioned above, as long as the batteries are good) but Pal Mickey can activate them as well as the new "Celebration" pins. Ours went off in HM, Small World and during the Spectromagic parade. We were having a blast with ours.

So keep bringing them and keep using them, endless fun in line making all the kids around us jealous that our Pal Mickey can make our pins do little shows.

WOW!!!! That's so cool!!!!! I remember my pin went off at TOT, right before the drop, and of course, it was supposed to be totally dark, and people were looking at me, like: "turn this off"... and I just couldn't do anything... later on, they changed it, and the pin didn't go off anymore at TOT. I agree with that... it kinda spoiled the darkness/fun.

What are these new "Celebration" pins about? Any info on them?

Sorry. For some reason I never checked my own thread after I returned from the trip. The "Celebration" pins are, in theory, these medallions that have the "50 Years" logo on them with the lights somewhere on the face. Believe it or not, we were never able to actually find any in the parks or at the World of Disney. I'm not sure they are still selling them, but they are mentioned in the Pal Mickey instruction booklet.

BTW, another suggestion: If you still want to bring the 100 Years pins, spend a little extra to get the rubber pin backs. Our metal ones got bent out of shape and couldn't keep the pins on. Best 2.50 I spent the entire time.

I can confirm some previous posts......there were originally 5 "100 Years of Magic" magical moments pins, which I collected, and then they came out with a second set of magical moments pins. The second set of pins were a little smaller, but they had more features, like the games and interactivity. I believe all of these pins take that same 2032 battery that the new 50 years medallion pin takes. I'm not 100% positive, but it seems like the shops that sell the new medallion pin also sell the batteries- maybe someone can confirm. I agree, I like the original pins the best- they were bigger, and the lights really put on a bright noticeable show.
