Girl, 10, Cuffed for Scissors in School

PHILADELPHIA - A 10-year-old girl was placed in handcuffs and taken to a police station because she took a pair of scissors to her elementary school.

School district officials said the fourth-grade student did not threaten anyone with the 8-inch shears, but violated a rule that considers scissors to be potential weapons.

Administrators said they were following state law when they called police Thursday, and police said they were following department rules when they handcuffed Porsche Brown and took her away in a patrol wagon.

"My daughter cried and cried," said her mother, Rose Jackson. "She had no idea what she did was wrong. I think that was way too harsh."

Police officers decided the girl hadn't committed a crime and let her go.

However, school officials suspended her for five days. Administrators will decide at a hearing whether she may return to class, or be expelled to a special disciplinary school.

The scissors were discovered while students' belongings were being searched for property missing from a teacher's desk.

School district officials have promised a crackdown on unruly students this year, and new policies give administrators the power to expel students for infractions as minor as violating the dress code, chronic tardiness or habitual swearing.

Administrators say the steps are needed to regain control over a notoriously unruly school system, but some parents have complained that discipline has been overly harsh and that school officials have been too quick to call police about minor problems.

Wash. Preschoolers Given Dog Food to Eat

Fri Dec 10,11:02 PM ET Strange News - AP

TACOMA, Wash. - A teaching assistant gave some preschoolers dog food to eat during a play-acting exercise at Northeast Tacoma Elementary School. A Tacoma School District spokeswoman said the children spat out the dry dog food and no one suffered any ill effects.

The teaching assistant has been placed on paid leave pending an investigation.

District spokeswoman Patti Holmgren said it happened Monday in an early education class while the supervisor was out of the room.

When a few of the students pretended to be puppies, getting down on their hands and knees and barking, the assistant attempted to encourage their playacting. She fetched a packet of dry dog food from another room and placed bits on paper plates on the floor.

The dog food came from a display intended to teach the preschoolers what not to eat, Holmgren said.

School Principal Pat Flores learned about the incident Tuesday after a parent complained. In a letter sent Wednesday to parents, Flores called the event "unfortunate."

Dear god, that is the stupidest thing to be cuffed for. She didn't know any better. Come on, really. It considers scissors as weapons? Then how do you expect to make all of the projects where scissors are needed like making paper snow flakes? What's this world comming to. That poor girl...

This incident is indicative of the decreasing supply of common sense in our society. The question is, which came first? The schools "zero tolerance" nonsense, or the parents "my darling can't do anything wrong" attitude?

Every rule has a history; sharp scissors were allowed, until one little darling brought a pair of surgical shears in, and cut someone. Common sense would tell you that any scissors that could be used as a weapon should be confiscated from THOSE INCLINED TO DO SO, and that student should be punished. But wait! That would be "discriminating" and "judgemental" against someone's little troublemaker (HOW DARE YOU LABEL MY CHILD!!) and might result in controversy. Much easier to have a blanket rule, no exceptions allowed. That way the decent, hard-working, well-behaved students are viewed as potential slashers if they want scissors a little better than fiskars.

I wouldn't laught too much about the books. I forsee a time when only paperbacks will be allowed, and perhaps they will have to have the staples removed, much like those in prison. Not only will that eliminate them as potential weapons, but will also reduce the weight of backpacks. I'm surprised that a parent hasn't sued because his/her daughter has a bad back.

I don't remember exactly what grade the child was in (it was elem. school), but there was a big stink here a while back. The child had brought the little gun off of an action figure to school. The child was suspended (if I remember correcly). There was alot of contraversy over how it was delt with.

you've gotta be kidding me! first this wal-mart crud and now THIS?!?!

Is it me or are our schools not knowing what to do anymore? For examples, my little brother is given homework by a STUDENT. it is then graded by the same STUDENT and then is given another assignment by said STUDENT. see any problems?

second scenario, there is a 19 year old freshman...in my old high school!!!! anyone else see soemthing WRONG with this? he can't even legally DATE his "peers" without going to jail.

*throws hands up and goes to move to canada* call me when common sense returns.
