Much of the country is locked in snow and ice as winter drags on ... and on ... and on. But at Walt Disney World Resort, where the only snow that falls is created by the magic of Imagineering, preparations are already in full swing for this year's Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival, which will be bigger and more beautiful than ever.

This year, the festival begins earlier than it ever has — opening March 3 and running through May 16. That means that nearly three weeks before winter officially ends, things will be in full bloom at Epcot, and Guests will be able to sneak an early taste of the delights of spring. There are other benefits to the new opening date as well. "We'll be able to feature more brilliant color than ever, with richly hued petunias, violas, snapdragons, and other hardy flowers," says festival horticulture manager Eric Darden. "By starting earlier and
... going through mid-May, it allows more Guests than ever to experience the festival and to plan ahead for their spring and summer gardening." The festival will feature all the traditional treats — gardening demonstrations and how-tos, special live concerts, and more, plus of course the spectacular plants and flowers to admire. There's even a special demonstration community garden to inspire Guests to learn more about the flourishing community-garden movement. But one highlight brings an extra-special helping of pixie dust to the festival — Pixie Hollow Fairy Garden will be back to delight Guests, and it's full of new surprises.

The 2010 Pixie Hollow Fairy Garden is three times bigger than it was last year, when it debuted. The magical sparkling Fairy topiaries are returning, and this year Vidia and Terence will be joining Tinker Bell, Rosetta, Silvermist, Fawn, and Iridessa. Look carefully, and you'll even find their Fairy tools and treasures, crafted from objects they've found in our human world.

Another new addition to the Fairy Garden is Fawn's Butterfly House, a pavilion full of living winged jewels that float among visiting Guests. Previous years have featured Minnie's Magnificent Butterfly House, but animal-talent Fairy Fawn is truly the perfect hostess for this lovely attraction.

Spending all day at a garden festival can sometimes tax a child's patience, but Pixie Hollow Fairy Garden is full of fun especially for young Guests. Tinker Nook is full of hands-on activities to inspire budding gardeners and Fairy fans alike. There's also Fairy face-painting and plenty to discover and explore in a garden created especially for kids.

Magic, flowers, sunshine, and Fairy dust — what more could we need to chase away the winter blahs, and return home full of inspiration just in time for spring planting? The festival, incorporating all gardening programs and exhibits, is included in regular Epcot admission.
