Same as me as a little kid I hated it and said I would never go on again, but as time passed I began to love it and now it is one of the rides where if I miss it I would be very mad.

To my knowledge there is no link between them at all. I could be wrong, but I have never heard anything about them being linked or about a Disney person leaving to create GWL.

I agree 100% there is no ride that I hate that I would skip on purpose. If you just rode a ride once and didn't like just give it another chance you might end up liking it.

Since it is 12:00 Disney time, I would most likely be at Typhoon Lagoon enjoying the wave pool or the lazy river because if it is as hot as it is here in Maryland then I would need to cool down some way.

This is also what I think, but my family has also found a great spot right near the entrance to Space Mountain you have a great view of everything which makes it the second best spot to watch them behind main street.
