WSJ: Even Disney Is Worried About The High Cost Of A Disney Vacation (gift link)

Gift link here. Alternate link here. I started working with the WSJ on this back in November. I pointed out - as I've said here - that Disney prices its theme parks for the top 20% of American households by income - those with pre-tax earnings of $264K. And if we're being honest, Disney really...

Sanity Check: Does early 2025 have the most WDW ride closures in recent non-pandemic history?

I've been asked by a media org to put into context the number of things that are closed in WDW right now. To do that, I used our 'closures' database to track, for each day in the last ~15 years, the major attractions and shows that were closed on that date. I counted things like Primeval Whirl...

Disney's rules for theme park influencers are hilariously ridiculous

From BoingBoing: I love the line "And then there are the pirates." Personally, I think we should all call EPCOT's harvest event the "EPCOT Food & **** Festival" from now on.

Reedy Creek Improvement District long-term land use meeting 2023

I went to the RCID planning meeting today. Long-term land use plan updated to allow: - more hotel rooms - two additional minor theme parks ("like water parks"-I asked) - one additional major theme park More soon. For what it's worth: The original 2020 plan, adopted in 2010, allowed for 1...

Anyone want to help check some WDW ride downtime calculations?

Looking at the amount of downtime for attractions like Rise and Remy, I started collecting daily downtime numbers. I'm trying to figure out how much of each park's ride capacity is lost each day. I have the following data: Ride downtime by day for 2022 Estimated hourly ride capacity for every...

    Defunctland deep dive on Fastpass

Defunctland has released a video that analyzes the effects of Fastpass and FP+ on wait times and the number of rides experienced. They built a theme park simulator (in Python) to see how it all worked out. It's really well done. Answers a lot of questions. Worth watching.

DHS DHS FastPass Tiers Have Changed along with FP+ for Smugglers Run

Slinky and MFSR are Tier 1. Everything else is Tier 2. MFSR has FP beginning February 19. I assume Rise and MMRR will be Tier 1 when they start giving on FPs. No word on when that is.

EPCOT Birds-eye image of what 'new Future World' looks like?

I'm updating the Epcot chapter for the 2020 Unofficial Guide. Is there a good overhead map of what Future World is going to look like by 2021? I'm sure it's here somewhere, so anyone who can save me some time finding it will have my undying love and affection.

In what order does Disney try hotel discounts to increase occupancy?

I found All-Star rooms on Priceline Express for $59/night this week ($76 with tax). It got me wondering about the order in which Disney tries discounting rooms to boost occupancy. For example, selling on Priceline probably isn't the first move Disney makes - they have to pay commission, for...

No FP at PhilharMagic, Laugh Floor on 11/1

Is this a change to the FP lineup for the MK, or just some sort of glitch? Both attractions are open on 11/1 according to MDE. They're not able to be booked for FP though; they're displayed at the bottom of the page with the standard "distribution is done" message.

Seasonal Multi-Day Ticket Pricing Coming Soon

Disney moved to seasonal pricing for one-day tickets in February 2016. Word on the street is that seasonal pricing will come to multi-day tickets by mid-October this year. (I've heard as early as mid-September.) My guesses: Each park will have its own "seasons". This will allow DHS to charge...

What's the D23 Epcot Announcement that will affect call centers?

I'm told that CMs working the call centers are being pulled off, 100 at a time, to be told about an upcoming Epcot announcement at D23. It's probably not an attraction, because those take years to build, and people wouldn't be calling in now about it. My guess is that it's some short-term...
