Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Sure, but a lot of families won’t, which is Disney’s target audience for these two. Last week I went to see something with relatives. One small popcorn and a bottle of water was $15. Tickets and concessions for a family of four would be over $100 in a lot of places. If the entertainment value...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Honestly sounds a lot like 2023. A couple massive hits will probably emerge among a lot of decent-to-ugly underperformers. Redundancy and overlap are red flags for tentpoles.

On the subject of Moana 2 and Mufasa being released too close together, next year Disney has: May 23: Lilo and Stitch remake June 13: Elio The “original non-IP stories bomb” are already being written. And after releasing one Marvel film this year: Feb: Captain America May: Thunderbolts July...

To paraphrase the Timekeeper, if Captain America bombs Burbank’s pants will be full.

I would be shocked (wouldn’t be the first time) if it did Inside Out 2 numbers. Inside Out 1 was considered by many to be one of the last great Pixar titles, an emotional piece that was heartfelt and amusing; it enjoyed critical acclaim in a way that WDAS and Zootopia haven’t enjoyed. I mean...

Well, he’s an egregious huckster who you shouldn’t trust to tell you the color of the sky.

Assuming your number is correct, how many other movies this year have netted $133 million profit?

It’s currently the fourth highest grossing film of the year with the worldwide gross. Isn’t that better than modest?

Disney’s Mufasa - the lion king

TV critics have a tendency to be very favorable to series. Pretty uncommon to see a major/prestige title that’s under 80. RT now includes so many independent bloggers with questionable credentials that the movie scores can be misleading. Metacritic gives a better impression of professional...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Could speculate that Mufasa would’ve made more if Moana 2 hadn’t been released a month ago. Would also love to know how much overlap there is between Moana and Sonic audiences apart from AMC/Regal subscribers. Seems conceivable that some Disney family audiences forked over, what, $100 for...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

The problem with analyzing Disney’s releases is it doesn’t just boil down to the box office tally. Because the company has tied itself so closely to IP franchises, general audience approval is a more important metric than it might otherwise be. Moana 2 has done good business but the audience...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Looks like it would be more than Dumbo ($46 million) and less than Cinderella ($68 million), unadjusted for inflation. Mermaid had a $96 million opening last year. 2019 Lion King had a $191 million opening weekend.

Too lazy to look it up but how would that domestic opening compare to other live action remakes?

Which was likely Disney’s main requirement for this film so that it could be clearly marketed as a follow-up to 2019.

Agree that variety is sorely lacking. My personal gripe is the amount of daily showtimes the studios are able to get for their tentpoles. No reason Moana 2 needs to have twelve screenings per day during the week at my suburban multiplex. But then again Red One is still getting a handful of shows...

I mean they’ll sell more tickets to those Christmas titles than an Amy Adams mom-dog movie with mixed reviews and a bad trailer.

Or the prequel could’ve been rendered with less realism, skipping the photorealistic style entirely, but that would’ve defeated the purpose of trying to cash in on the remake.

Y’know it’s also possible both approaches have stylistic issues.

Saw a Mufasa tv spot and maybe I’d missed it in the trailer but some of the animal facial expressions look incredibly goofy (lowercase g). Very curious what kind of reaction it gets.
