I'm not bashing the school, just the quasi-fascist attitude of some of the fans, which I really haven't seen to taken to a similar extreme with any other schools. It almost reminds me of English football hooliganism.

No, it's not "funny" at all. And neither is what you are doing. You're "not bashing", but you won't let it go. Sorry but all schools who do this sucks. I've seen OSU fans be jerks, but I've also had people be flat out jerks to me just for wearing Ohio (not even Ohio state) gear in my own state, just down the street from campus. It's stupid and it's also wrong to think only one school is this bad.

I'm not sure you get how insulting you are being to me right now as an Ohio State fan who hates all football thanks to how insane all schools (including my own yes, but not just) have become. If you think this doesn't happen elsewhere, I'm sorry but it does. Which is exactly why I refuse to support college football now. Edit: That incident that I spoke of happened in 2005 and caused me to drop off slowly from all (including OSU).

Yet again this is nothing to do with covid. How about we applaud schools who are mandating vaccines. Granted I'm sure some were in same boats as my state, so it might take a while, but to me that's more effective here than what you're doing. Normally I love your posts, but today? Btw, 'Bama fans have always impressed this Yankee. They don't seem arrogant or particularly hostile to other schools (perhaps Auburn being an exception). OSU fans could learn a lesson...

I don’t think it would move it much but certainly some. There would be initial outrage but there are some people that would do it. We need about 1.5-2 million more people to get the shot so I don’t think it would move the needle much. Most fans can’t afford to go to the games

I'll jump in on that too. Florida, which is home to roughly 6.5% of the nation's population, has about 17% of US Covid-19 hospitalizations. What other state is at or near those levels?

Currently not many have that kind of ratio. I wouldn't be surprised if the situation is very different in a month or two with other states having disproportionate ratios. The only way it will be avoided is with much higher vaccination rates before a fall/winter spike happens in the northeast/midwest.

A 7 day rate/100K of 200 isn't the same as a 700 rate. Or from the NY Times Daily FL 101/100K, CA 34/100K.

Don't get me wrong here, a 200 rate or 34 daily isn't good. They can both be bad, but they're not the same.

I applaud OSU for mandating vaccines (my own school, that I'd rather disassociate myself from for many reasons, has not), and as I said, I have nothing against the university. But I still think some of their fans suck. You don't forget things like getting a potato gun willfully shot at in your direction, or having windows on your campus smashed after a game. Perhaps other schools' have worse fans, but the worst I have personally encountered, with the most inappropriate behavior, were Buckeye fans. But I don't blame the university for this, I blame the fan subculture, just like I wouldn't blame, lets say, Chelsea or Hotspur for the actions of their hooligan fans.

Here is the current one week trend in CA. Yes, the cases per 100K isn't as bad as Florida. But it still isn't great and they are increasing at a decent rate still. Also, they aren't even close to their winter case peak yet, so my question is do they have enough vaccinations to avoid it? They started their increase slightly later than Florida. And I don't even know what mitigation they are doing other than masks...I hope they can avoid reaching winter levels. No one wants to see that. Hopefully, they have already seen the worst for this particular wave.

Generally speaking, I sometimes wonder if it would help or not really. Like you said many fans cannot afford to attend games in the bigger schools at least. Even if you tried to do it for tailgating (which many do and not go to the game) they'd likely just go elsewhere. We joke here saying it would help get people vaccinated, but I'm not sure if it would really do it for most.

I think @helenabear hit the nail on the head with fans that have absolutely no ties to the university being the worst culprits of this. About a decade ago, some ‘Bama fan (non-alum) went to Auburn’s campus and poisoned their sanctified oak trees. That one stuck out in my mind since we were in ATL at the time so it was a huge news story in the south. Most other SEC alums from various schools were mortified. But a few UGA fans, who couldn’t find Athens except for the original Zaxby’s, wre applauding the felon/fool.

When I transferred from Cincinnati to OSU, I was legitimately afraid to park my blue car on campus during fall Fridays thinking I’d get keyed or worse just because it was Michigan-esque. So, I get it.

I’m not a football fan, either. Never attended a game as a student (I was already married and non-traditional). But there is this weird hallowed ground of that stadium that exists, even for a non-fan alum. While living close enough to make the trek, my wife and I would compete in a triathlon that ends on the 50 with the game day announcer celebrating each finisher on the Jumbotron. That and setting up your T2 pre-dawn with minimal lighting on the field is an oddly religious experience. I’ve also done IM Louisville, and running past Churchill Downs is similar even if I don’t give a darn about the ponies.

TLDR: I’m incredibly proud of the university and Wexner Med. Even though my program has since shuttered, the contributions that Buckeyes have made to my field are incomparable. But I won’t enter the 315 corridor on a home Saturday. It’s a madhouse.

This is why I don't do football anymore.

I also avoid 315 between Broadway and Lane on Saturdays. I foolishly made a flight out on a home game to WDW. That one might be canceled due to a conflict with a production I am on, but normally what is a 10 minute drive to the airport might turn into closer to an hour. One time coming home, a police officer kept trying to make me turn towards parking. I told him I didn't want to park, I wanted to go home... took him a few to realize that some of us just drive to go somewhere else. OSU hospital also has alternative routes they give for expecting parents during football season (ask me how I know).

Being so close to a great hospital is good... it's also bad.

I'm reading a little backlash on the mandate at the school. Not a lot though fortunately. The ideas some people have to not vaccinate is great.

What do people say around here? Deaths aren’t the only negative outcome?
Yes. Florida is in a worse situation right now. But for CA and FL, it’s like having two kids failing school and congratulating one because she is failing less than the other. Not gonna do that. Lol. Again what worries me is how far CA is away from their peak. January numbers were brutal there. They have a large population and delta is super contagious. I’m hoping they can avoid the situation getting any worse.

Since the delta variant is hospitalizing a younger demographic than in previous waves, we should see proportionally lower deaths totals with this wave, although because death is a lagging indicator, it's still probably too early to use total deaths to compare to previous waves. So, hospitalizations right now might provide the best snapshot of a state to state comparison.

California and Florida might also be difficult to compare simply because their geography is so different. I could be wrong about this, but Florida's population seems less geographically concentrated and a little more evenly dispersed than California , where you have enormous clusters of people in relatively small but disconnected areas and much larger tracts of very sparsely populated territory.

I know in Vermont, in addition to our high vaccine rates, the manner in which geography tends to isolate different regions of the state from each other (and other states from us), has definitely helped keep our COVID numbers manageable.

The implication in the original post was they were just the same. That the actions being done in "not FL" didn't help because they were the same.

It's more like having two kids failing in school, one of them just a little and the other a complete disaster. The one that's just a little is taking actions to reverse direction while the other isn't even trying. Then saying they're the same, so there's no difference between them and the actions the one is taking don't matter.

It's fine to say CA isn't doing great. It's a bad take to say the actions CA is doing to not get worse don't matter because it's already not great and just as bad as FL. It's being used as a way to excuse how bad FL is and justify FL not doing anything.
