Yes. That’s what I just said. Teachers wearing masks. Better hvacs. Both helped according to the study. But the study couldn’t find a benefit from kids wearing masks. To be honest I’m having trouble finding any study that shows kids wearing masks in schools helped.

There seems to be a disconnect somewhere. The main reason for you (the 'royal' you, as it were) to wear a mask is so YOU dont make other people sick not the other way around. Businesses post things that way. You are required to wear one to protect other patrons and those that work there. Not to protect yourself. Well, strictly speaking they say both yourself AND others. They have to. Teachers and staff are supposed to wear them so THEY dont make the kids sick. But I guess thats a no-no when talking about school kids.

Alrighty then. But the document also says this:

And this:

Nowhere did the article say that mask wearing did not have a beneficial effect. And if you believe the first document from the CDC, then this CDC document must also have at least a smidgen of validity:

“CDC recommends universal indoor masking for all teachers, staff, students, and visitors to K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status.”

Did you advocate for universal masking of children in school prior to March 2020 to protect them from the flu? If not, why not?

The nursing home my father in law is in just fired 6 CNAs that wouldn't get the vaccine and shifted the work load to the 14 that were left causing 6 of them to walk out. Now they have 8 people trying to do the job of 20. I think they should all be vaccinated but medical staff is hard to come by these days.

When my mom was in care a couple of years ago they couldn't find enough staff even in high end places. I can't imagine it is any easier now

No, clearly one cannot put "all the blame" on the governor of Florida. However, we are talking about a man who has tried to not only discourage mitigation measures, he has done everything in his power to try to make them ILLEGAL. It's disgusting.

Just bloody wear them - if not, at least in indoor settings when around alot of people. You wear seat belts, you don't speed, you don't drink and drive, you put clothes over your private regions, just stop this politicising nonsense about your freedoms.

The data support N95 masks worn by trained professionals in a clinical setting. Cloth masks worn by children in a classroom setting are entirely useless.

Not all kids wear cloth masks. There are many kinds that offer more protection. My kids wear Happy Masks which are lab tested to be the equivalent of N99 masks. They fit my kids just fine, my kids don't fuss with them, and they are happy to wear them.

More anecdotal evidence here, but I’ve spoken to a teacher friend who has said it’s a nightmare. Masks wet and caked with snot, milk, food…constantly touching under them and pulling them down…trying each other’s cool masks on.

I’m sure there are some that don’t do this, but pretending it’s not happening by people that don’t spend all day with the kids is misguided.

I was a preschool teacher pre-covid, and my former colleagues say last year almost all the students in the school (8 classrooms) wore masks all year and had no problems. Only a few of the toddlers had trouble.

There are no mitigation measures which are ILLEGAL. A vaccine passport is not a mitigation measure and there is only one case (businesses refusing service) where proof of vaccination is illegal.

Any person or business is free to put in place whatever mitigation measures that they wish to (see WDW and requiring masks indoors). They could even allow guests who provide proof of vaccination to opt out of measures. The only thing that they can not do is require proof of vaccination as a condition to entry. That's it. There is exactly one thing related to COVID which is ILLEGAL in Florida.

Well, first, you are straight up wrong - of course a vaccine passport is a mitigation measure. It is to prevent super-spreader events.

In any case, apparently you haven't been watching very closely. Where have you been? I was not just talking about what he DID make illegal, but clearly used the word "tried" - because he TRIED to make things like mask mandates illegal, but was foiled.

This guy has tried to do everything in his power to make COVID worse. I rarely use this word, but his actions are truly indefensible. He's sick and people have died because of his political ambitions.

Your ignorance on this issue is regrettable. Children are at meaningful risk. Eight days in, we already know of one child in the hospital due to COVID here. That’s one too many but there are sadly many others. Children who contract the virus are also spreading it to their parents and grandparents. But let’s not try to do anything to mitigate that because it’s just too darn hard.

Not to mention the whole “flatten the curve” thing is important for children’s hospitals too - and we have a LOT less children’s hospitals across the country than typical hospitals. Children’s hospitals in Louisiana are running out of capacity. There are dangers to children with all kinds of disorders if the children’s hospital capacity is filled with pediatric Covid patients.

Children’s hospitals in areas seeing a surge in Covid cases are experiencing the same pattern: More children are coming in with Covid symptoms just ahead of the start of the school year. Bed shortages and overworked doctors and nurses in children’s hospitals are becoming commonplace.

We were out of state when my daughter broke her arm back in early July (thankfully when covid numbers were lower). The local urgent care had to send us to a children’s hospital specifically for our daughter to get the care she needed due to the specifics of the break and the diagnostic tools needed to make an appropriate diagnosis and treatment. We spent the night practically in the children’s hospital ER with her. I’m supremely thankful that we didn’t have to deal with any capacity issues, since even as it was we were there for like 8 hours, and that was with a light night in term of patients.

There are districts that shut down for 2 weeks due to quarantine issues. My own kid was in an exposed group and would have missed school if not for vaccines. But sure, just ignore it because it doesn't affect you.

As a parent I see a ton and watch how this whole back and forth and messing with days in schools affects people. It may not be earth shattering but it's tough on them and tough on us as parents

Yeah. I can’t agree with this. They don’t. Whether they don’t want to or they don’t wear them properly or they don’t fit right. They don’t handle it just fine.

A lot of them do... those who don't often are younger. Even the kid I know who has down syndrome (and not mild) can. So this argument is not great. If an 8yo neurotypical and no disabilities cannot handle it, it's likely down to parents not teaching. It's not that hard. Nor is tying masks or getting kid masks to fit.

A fair point. The first difference however. Kids could get flu shots and by far most do. It is in fact recommended for kids 6 months and up. So while occasionally your kid would carry something home for example, making the whole household sick, it was unlikely. On the other hand, there are NO vaccines for kids under 12. And for those over 12 its only been a short time since they were approved. So rates are low. The question is, considering what we are seeing, in which direction do you error for the short term, and not open ended? Wear them? Or not?

Those that do advocate masks for kids are not asking you to do it forever. And also only indoors or close crowds. Only until things get under control again. Your last line remains to be seen. Unless you preface it with 'so far'. Also, its a cultural and (here in America) political thing but in Asia it is pretty common to see masks during cold and flu season.

Okay, a few things, because your school district sounds borderline inept.

Are you telling me that if a student was identified as a close contact through contact tracing, they were sent home to quarantine and school for them stopped entirely for two weeks?

Our schools were open with mandatory masks last year, and it did absolutely nothing to stop community spread. There were still cases among the students, and close contacts still had to quarantine for two weeks. But they weren't just kicked out of school for two weeks. They just switched to remote learning. Masks didn't stop the quarantines.
