This thread is the only place where "sky is falling" hyperbole is the normal. Everything else I read, from the NY Times to other message boards for other hobbies, have a much more rational and science based thought process on the Delta concerns. This thread essentially is ready to send us into an Australia style lockdown over risks that equate to tenths of a percent.

Yup. Almost 800 people in the Cape Cod outbreak. Of those, 75% were vaccinated. Of those 600, ~1% are hospitalized, and Delta is more severe for the UNvaccinated.

Those numbers aren't good when you scale them up.

CORRECTION FOR ACCURACY: 882 infected, 653 (74%) were vaccinated, 7 out of 882 hospitalized (0.79%)

Welcome to Florida folks. Where fewer than half of the 12-15 year olds have been vaccinated. Where there was little to no encouragement for them do to so. Where schools open in a couple of weeks without mask mandates, allowing the Delta variant plenty of fuel to spread at will infecting scores of parents and grandparents. Not to mention the kids themselves. Where hospitals are filling up, cases are running rampant and local officials scramble to look for solutions in a state where a whole lot of people don’t give a )&*%# about anyone but themselves.

Do I sound angry? You bet. Thanks to stubborn and unvaccinated workers at my mother-in-law’s nursing home, she and an entire wing of residents have now tested positive for COVID.

She is an Alzheimer’s patient and was one of the first to get the vaccine when it became available. Fortunately she is asymptomatic so far. She and the other vaccinated residents have been moved to a separate isolated wing of the home.

The unvaccinated have all been taken to the hospital.

So a big hearty thank you to those selfish and stupid individuals who think their “personal” decision not to vaccinate affects only them. Bravo for standing up for your “freedom.” The frail and elderly among us be damned.

We cancelled our vacation last week over this mess of a state we live in. Now we have to share this latest development with our children, and try to console my father-in-law who is furious and apoplectic. And heartbroken. Thanks to the callous lack of concern we find ourselves surrounded by here. Good day
to all and if you’re not willing to be part of the solution, sit down and be quiet. Because regardless of what some may think we are all in this mess together. That is all.

I am so very sorry for what you are going through. I've been there myself with a loved on and it is so hard and such a helpless feeling. I don't know if you're a praying type or what, but I'll keep you and your family in my thoughts.

I have to say I am a bit surprised by the USF response. Yes, I'm late, childhood back issues rears its head and while I read a little as the meds were trying to kick in, typing wasn't happening.

USF can try to claim their demographic is older than Disney's young families. As in their average child age is likely way older than Disney based on the rides they have. But still, it's a "we don't care" response to me. Florida actually could ask for vaccine proof in order to wear a band that sets you apart from unvaccinated but could you imagine policing that? Masks indoors or not, someone will be unhappy.

Agree. Much like Karen, the Jesuses of the Latin world get tired of it. Like a good Catholic mom, my child has a holy name often used in such a manner as well. I wonder what makes Cap Cod so different? In some places the spikes are as little as 10 percent vaccinated. Maybe the high number vaccinated so very few unvaccinated to infect? Serious question.

You also missed the bit about people more than 180 days past first infection (6 months) may be more likely to be re-infected than with Alpha. Since we're supposed to be paying attention when and what happens when neutralizing antibodies start to wane.

This factor kind of argues to let delta rip as quickly as possible through the unvaccinated (and whatever breakthroughs occur) to get to herd immunity and end the pandemic. It seems to me that flattening the curve will accomplish nothing but keep Delta around longer and lead to more reinfections and possibly breakthroughs.

I'm suggesting this worldwide, not just in the USA. There is no chance to get enough people vaccinated to get near herd immunity in less than 180 days. I realize there will be illness, death, etc. I don't know what the better suggestion is to be honest.

I wrote months ago on here that the government needs to provide individuals with a cash incentive to get vaccinated. Biden encouraged states today to offer $100 payments to those getting vaccinated. I don’t believe that’s enough of an incentive. Pay people $500 or more, and maybe you’ll see the number of vaccinated individuals rapidly move upward.

I agree in principle and agreed months ago. However, it should have been tied to the last "stimulus" payment and it should have been regardless of income.

Can’t this country just come together for once and do the right thing?

This seems to be the plan in the uk.. whether I agree with it or not is incidental. I think the govt realised we weren’t reaching herd immunity through vaccination and decided to open up presumably letting the young get immunity the harder way.

we are at the point now where very few young people are coming forward for the vaccine, we aren’t vaccinating under 18s but as a country we are pretty broke! We need to open up and get moving again and that comes with a cost

mask mandates have been dropped virtually everywhere here (london public transport an exception) but most people are still wearing them in shops, transport etc - in fact to me use has grown since the mandate was dropped! Go figure the reasons why..

Worldwide the vaccination rate isn't even possible right now. For the USA, there is a percentage who won't be convinced. They'd rather risk serious illness or death than have their "DNA modified" or other insane beliefs.

I tend to think we should avoid transmitting diseases to kids that will stick them into ICU’s on ventilators.
