One traffic light away from Crossroads shopping center just down the road from Disney Springs is a huge low-income apt complex which mostly is rented by many that work in tourism. If Vista is going to be another affordable housing, many probably would try to live there.

First, Disney should stop selling property in FL for a quick buck. It tends to create long term problems for them like how Celebration changed the flood plains or how there’s so much urban sprawl NW of property thanks to property sales that made Horizon West possible. Not every acre of property needs to be maximized for profitability. The new owner of this property is likely going to build a hotel or some other venture directed at tourists because that will have a higher likelihood of them recouping their costs. Lack of affordable housing stock is a big problem in Central FL and losing what could have been more units so close to WDW is a mistake. Plus, it’s better to control as much property as you can so you don’t get boxed in like DLR is.

Affordable housing is an issue everywhere. When my family member in another state sold a used car and collected the payment at the buyer's apt, he counted 4 mattress sprawled out in the living room in addition to who know how many were sleeping in the bedrooms.

Yes, it is an issue everywhere. However, in Central Florida, it is Disney’s issue because so many CMs can’t find affordable 1 or 2 bedroom apartments. That land could have been used for that purpose.

While the Reedy Creek Improvement District shields Disney from input on development it does not shield them from public criticism. Stories about Cast Members living in their cars is not something Disney wants and we’ve already seen them respond with pay increases and the addition of benefits.

The problem of tourism employees living in lousy conditions won’t go away because the Orlando area already has an abnormally high cost of housing. Universal has responded by offering land for the development of 1,000 affordable housing units. Disney now has surplus units that could be more cheaply be converted instead of later potentially having to donate for new construction.

It makes sense, I also hate how much**land they’ve sold off, there’s land clearing going on right now on 192 and now you can see the top of DAK lodge from the road. Vista is just such a small piece of real estate already surrounded by hotels and time shares I can see them just wanting rid of it. I was hoping they’d keep one of the housing complexes at little lake Bryan available for cast housing (either commons, Chatham or Patterson) they’re nicer, newer, in a better location, and are next to Cast recreation area mickeys retreat.
It’s also interesting that they sell off land in some places, then buy more in others. I think over the last couple years they’ve bought close to 3,000 acres around celebration and to the west of magic kingdom. It seems they’re possibly trying to let go of pieces they know they’ll never use and create a buffer around their more important assets, like the recent land purchase near MK.
