I think the state is only 26% vaccinated due to supply, not lack of demand or any bizarre political motive based on an election result.

The reason the slots are opening up is the high risk for severe complication segment is as vaccinated as it is going to be and the death/hospitalizations show it.
The time to get shots in arms is being wasted with people not making appointments or not showing up so having warm bodies ready to get shots is important. The faster we get the most people vaccinated the slower the spread and the lower the risk of mutation. The ones that don't want to, are lazy, will never get the vaccine can be dealt with later. Speed is of the essence here as we have seen with the current variants circulating that are more transmissible than the wild variant from the beginning.
Cases are rising, people are saying **** it and we are not ready to do that yet. Numbers do not lie.

Yeah. Nearly every state is pretty close to that 26% number.

That's true in Illinois. They're opening up eligibility and there are still a lot of 65+ who are having trouble getting appointments.

I guess that’s just not what we are seeing in Ohio. We are also at 26% and it’s extremely difficult to get an appointment. I think the lowering of age requirement to get the vaccine has more to do with Biden ordering the states to do so by May 1 than any decrease in demand.

Seems we are in the early stages of a worldwide surge, and most US states are trending the wrong way as well. Wouldn’t be surprised to see restrictions increase again soon in many states - hopefully for the last time.

In my uninformed opinion, I'd like the powers that be and also the news to start focusing on benefits based reasons to get vaccines rather than fear based. I understand why reporting of what could happen if we let our guard down, etc., but now I think they need to start switching gears to tout the good that will come from getting the vaccine. "Look how quickly we can return to normal if everyone gets vaccinated!!!" - you know, that kind of stuff...

I think we are reaching the juncture of people who were always going to get the vaccine no matter what and now going towards people who are on the fence, need a push. The power of positive reinforcement needs to come into play at this point!

A certain segment may look at falling cases and ask themselves "why should I" put themselves through the little effort it would take to get the vaccine or "see, there you go, I didn't get it but cases are still falling. Mission accomplished". Immigration next? moving on

Covering a cough with no mask on is a far more effective way to prevent disease transmission than not covering a cough with a mask on.

There should be a huge national vaccination campaign going on right now. Instead, we're so screwed up that politicians are afraid to do their job and support the vaccination effort out of fear that half the country will do the exact opposite.

Personally, I've thought we -- and especially the media -- have been way too obsessed with "number of cases" from the beginning. Cases can be an indicator of other things, of course, but as an isolated statistic, number of cases really mean nothing. You could have 100 cases and all of them result in serious complications, hospitalization, and/or death. You could have 10,000 cases and none of them result in any serious problems.

There is no perfect statistic that captures all of the possible outcomes from Covid. But, for lack of better data, I think the two numbers we should be focusing on are hospitalizations and deaths. If those numbers drop to a low level, I don't think we should be particularly concerned with whether cases are high or low.

I agree, but death is a trailing indicator, so using it to determine what mitigation should be done is conservative choice. That would be ok in my opinion, except that mitigation fatigue is setting in and will grow. It would be good if the guidance reflected the true needs sooner than delayed a few weeks or a month. Hospitalization is less of a trailing indicator. I agree both need to be looked at and the current prioritization for vaccination towards those most acceptable to serious covid and death get should make those numbers go down faster than overall positive COVID PCR tests.

On a separate unrelated point I cannot see why a fully vaccinated (i.e. two weeks past second shot) cruise crews and passengers should not be allowed to sail. Been a long time since I read the conditional sailing requirements in the USA, but other than having to do a test cruise(s) (RCI had 100,000+ volunteers [unvaccinated at the time]), if everyone is vaccinated (So no kids...sorry) then other mitigations should be minimal. Destinations would be limited, but cruises would likely be able to staff and execute limited ships/trips with a profit while waiting for even less restrictions. I am not sure the CDC or the cruise lines want to hassle with it(CDC conditional sailing requirements) for only what may be 4-8 months. Though 4-8 months loss revenue for cruise lines is nothing to sneeze at.

Of course getting fully vaccinated crews is not easy until everyone can get vaccinated which is just starting.

Notice that no one on either side is discussing the reduction in normal seasonal illnesses who's transmission have also been thwarted by these sanitation protocols. Colds, flu almost absent this past year.

I remember years ago either Fauci or someone similar said in an interview how great it would be if we could lockdown the nation and world for a time. The number of variants of flu might diminish making the annual flu vaccine process better. But that no society would be willing to do that just to decrease the future flu and cold variants. I do not have the exact quote, whether it was Fauci or another person or even what year it was, but remembered it being said some years ago in an interview.

Agreed. Tout vaccinated travel, theaters, Broadway shows, and restaurants. Now that Israel and our LTC facilities have real, meaningful data to share with people, that info should be shouted from the rooftops.

Rosie the Riveter and Uncle Sam this rollout to death. Create Instagram worthy selfie spots and change the right side of the CNN screen from deaths and cases to the MDA telethon style thermometer of how close we are. Because we’re a competitive lot, illustrate “the score” with other leading nations if need be.

Local news outlets should illustrate how close a city/county/state might be to “normal” if people would just pony up and pull up their sleeves.

This current plateau or wave sucks. If our trend follows Israel’s, I really hope our media highlights the positive the way they did during February.

Curious: is that 26% initiated (roughly USA now), or fully vaccinated? Really encouraging for us if the former. Gonna be a long month + if the latter (giving more time for current community spread).
