10K+ cases on a holiday weekend is not a great number. That’s an over 40% increase over the Sat after Christmas Day. However, on a positive note I think the percent positive is probably likely to drop some as we get back to normal testing runs. It’s conceivable that due to the holiday weekend and a lot of people being off from work there are less people being tested for work or tested due to exposure at work or school. In other words maybe there’s a higher percentage of people with symptoms being tested. I think we probably need to wait another few days to see how it stabilizes out.

I agree. I wasn’t saying it’s a coping mechanism in a negative way. There’s nothing wrong with people feeling good about being young and healthy and feeling good about how that impacts the odds of them having a serious Covid illness as long as they aren’t being careless because they think they are immune. I don’t think very many people fall in that bucket anyway, maybe the very young adults who think they are invincible in general.

Because covid is an infectious disease there’s a danger to people not thinking it’s a big deal because they think that they personally won’t have a bad case, if they act on that belief. You can still infect others who may not be as young or healthy and although the odds aren’t high there are young and healthy people ending up in the hospital and even dying.

I've been pondering this. I think there is some, some fatigue too, and some really don't believe it's serious.

I was talking with someone that I am taking over a position for in a volunteer organization and they truly felt numbers were not bad and that only the media was making it worse sounding. Back in February/early March sure, that was arguable. But to hang onto that mentality 10 months later? They felt the vaccine was bunk too - and said as much to me knowing I am in a trial. This was not long ago - though before results of efficacy were confirmed. It was weird. But there are many who feel it's no big deal. Many who poo poo science. I do blame our leadership for promoting false narratives that people buy into.

A friend of mine is traveling to Taiwan to visit family. There is a 15 day mandatory quarantine upon arrival. Steep fines if you step foot out the door. If you look at the way the country is doing now, they can be normal because they did the hard work to snuff out the disease. And here people still fight about wearing masks. Kirk Cameron held his third protest maskless. People being naysayers for vaccines - which is our way out of this mess. Without it will go on. It's kinda baffling to me. I'm not sure what they expect us to do...

I know someone who accepted a temp assignment in Taiwan. That country does not play around. Upon quarantine, cameras were already installed videotaping 24/7 outside theIr front doors to ensure he and his family did not break quarantine rules.

I work for a grocery store here in VA, it is mandatory that all employees must wear a mask at all times while they are on company property and this is strictly enforced (over nose and under chin). With the amount of people working in the store and the lack of space in the backroom and each department it is impossible to keep 6 feet of social distance. We are working basically shoulder to shoulder at times with other employees all thought out the store. We do a decent job of sanitizing high touch area's and there is plenty of hand sanitizer for all employees. We have had about a half dozen employees test positive for covid (none were serious thankfully) from different departments in the store. In each case not one employee was infected by those who were infected and the virus was not able to spread despite our inability to social distance from one another. About 150 employees work at my store. Were a mask people!

I've heard similar from hair salons as well. Even a stylist testing positive and no clients were ill.

The things my friend told me about sounded crazy, but that's what keeps them safe there. They are visiting family who is elderly so they understand the need even more so. I 100% do not blame them. They'll be gone 6 weeks so first 2 will be in quaratine separately too.

I never specifically said that you said that. I was just trying to give an opinion on why some people aren’t as concerned as others, but I think it came out wrong.

After it’s over, We can hope folks come out of this more self aware; hand washing, surface cleaning, touching their face less, less casual hand shaking and hugging and staying home, staying away from others when sick etc.

As for masks, (after this is over) it would be great if at least folks that are sick that can’t stay home wear masks. Not so sure masks will catch on long term in the US like they have in Asia for example..

Only time can tell..

The house is covering all bets that in 3 years - barring further catastrophe - that we will be gluttonous once again.

The uptick in outdoors/disconnected behavior that has occurred is a silver lining to this...but I don’t know if it will expand/hold

To be completely accurate that‘s pre-existing co-morbidities. For example if you get Covid which leads to pneumonia and then you die and had nothing else wrong with you you still have a co-morbidity of pneumonia listed as cause of death. Same as cardiac arrest, etc... Thats why there’s a difference between that 17% and the now famous debunked conspiracy theory that only 6% of Covid deaths were actually from Covid that made the rounds in the Fall.

My FIL is planning to go to the drive up vaccination site in Daytona tomorrow for his vaccine. I don’t think he realizes there are only 1,000 doses and people started lining up Sunday afternoon to get one. I’ll update tomorrow what happens. I think this type of setup is ultimately how they need to do it most places eventually, but maybe just do appointments.
