I don't get the point of this. seems like a waste and pointless.

Very popular event in general.

Do you not like Holiday light displays? In my county, there’s a neighborhood famous for its residents going all-out with their Xmas Lights, and every year cars are lined up to drive through every night.

Also:
-Perfect safe Covid Holiday event to take the family to.
-Drive your car through Magic Mountain!!!! 😃

People are so bored at this point in 2020, that they will wait in an hour plus line to go into Downtown Disney. Compared to Downtown Disney, driving through Magic Mountain with the Holiday lights seems exciting. That is how low 2020 has set the bar for excitement.
I’m thinking some of you folks have never driven through a big fantastical Christmas light neighborhood. All over the country, driving through an area’s self-designated “Candy Cane Lane” is a much-loved tradition! It’s not just a Covid-era last resort, this kind of event has brought joy to people for decades!

Combine that with live music and performers and a car full of Xmas snacks AND a once in a lifetime chance to drive the family car through Magic Mountain and... What’s not to like??? 😃

I agree, it is actually pretty cool the more I think about it. At least Magic Mountain found a way to give a more unique experience then just having the park open without any rides operating.

No I get THOSE events. I love going to them myself but having one inside and driving around a Six Flags makes no friggin sense. "Look dear, another ride we can't go on. And another. And another. Oooo! Hey kids if you look out your right there's another fun one we can't go on." Knotts' events I get to a certain extent. But you not even walking around the park or allowed to here. It be one thing if Magic Mountain had a drive through Christmas Light event annually but it doesn't. This makes nooooo friggin sense.

You’re thinking about all the things one can’t do, hence why you can’t see how this could be appealing for some people.

It’s a chance to drive by and see pretty lights, which is neat, considering the predicament we’re in.

This is even odder on a Disney site. The Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights started as one of those crazy neighborhood displays.

Exactly. Driving through nice neighborhoods with homes decked out for Christmas was a highlight of my childhood Christmas experience. I still do this as an adult, with my mom.

As fun as this sounds, to drive around an empty themepark. I can't believe it's 20 PER adult, not per car.
Sounds a bit steep, but it does allow an SUV stuffed with a couple, their kids and their friend’s kids to all enter for $40. They’re probably trying to avoid a vehicle packed with drunk partying adult passengers getting in for $20.

The Six Flags near me, Great America, is doing something similar. The park is putting up lights and you can visit it, although not as a drivethrough event but as a walkthrough. The pricing, though, is similar: $20 or free with a pass/membership.

Illinois has had similar policies to California in regards to parks, and no rides have opened or will open this year in the state (why zoos and water parks are sufficiently different from amusement parks and have been allowed to open has not been sufficiently elaborated upon by our governor).

Fair enough. I am just used to going through neighborhoods beautifully lite up or a zoo lights event, or a drive through World of Ilummination event. Doing it in a theme park seems odd to me. like " here i am trying to have fun but over there is something I would soooo would have fun on if it was open" like seeing all these coasters just sitting there as I drive around would depress me because I would be constantly reminded the park is for riding rides and we can't do that. The idea that I am in a theme park that can't serve its primary purpose would be depressing. I hope folks enjoy to me its just odd. Would rather grab a hot cooca and go around looking at neighborhood lights.

For me that is the sticking point. Echoing most posters here, I love driving through holiday lighting displays and have done it many times from childhood through today. In every event I have encountered so far, the most money requested came in the form of a donations box or concessions stand. I understand Magic Mountain needing to make money after this dry year, but charging a per-person fee for viewing lights, rather monetizing something that usually isn't, feels off to me.
