90% is a huge number. Really big deal. Assuming you need 60% of the public to be immune to get to herd immunity that means we need 2/3 of people to get the vaccine or 220M people in the US. If herd immunity is achievable closer to 40% that means less than half need to get the vaccine. Herd immunity means the virus will essentially no longer have the ability to spread (Go to zero cases). Even before herd immunity is reached when enough people get the vaccine the R naught will still drop to a number under 1 which means a steady decrease in infections overall on the way to zero.
It‘s possible that tourism in general and particularly WDW will see a boost in business as soon as we reach the steady decline state and all restrictions should be gone by the time we reach herd immunity. A lot of people will also be much more comfortable traveling once they themselves are vaccinated and I’d expect Disney to push for or maybe even require their CMs to get the vaccine. A 90% effective vaccine is a game changer for Disney and the world in general.

To be fair...I didn’t think Penguin was going that for one second...I was just giving a PSA that no one should think that. It’s silly.
And I doubt that fda “red tape” would have been strictly enforced in this scenario beyond scientific safety.
This is costing trillions of dollars...and you know what controls the rotation of the earth.

The reverse of 99.8%, 0.2% is a HUGE number when the sample size is large and the outcome is severe. Needs a lot more digits. Not to mention, 99.8% assumes we’ve under counted infections by orders of magnitude.

Correction. Replace "by the big boys and girls" with "by the vaccines." A vaccine(s) is the only thing that is going to control COVID and if it is 90% effective like the reports from Pfizer then it/they will control it. I'm sure you'll give credit to the great plan and leadership by the new guy in January but the fact is that no mitigation plan will ever bring the virus under control without decimating the economy. An effective and safe vaccine is the only way to both control the virus and not decimate the economy.

DIS was within $6 of all time high despite several parks still shut down worldwide and others severely limited and the movie studios haven’t released anything in months. That’s a pretty good sign that investors are highly optimistic that the vaccine will bring travel and entertainment out of their lows sooner than later.

Here's a case from the Green Mountain state that illustrates the complete fallacy of this idea that all we need to do is somehow "protect the vulnerable" while letting everyone else do what they want.
There was a large gathering on October 7th at the Montpelier Civic Center for what was originally reported as a hockey match, but was actually a broom ball game. One individual who had known positive family contacts attended this event and didn't tell anyone. He has since been identified as the index case. Several people subsequently became ill and tested positive. This outbreak has now climbed to over 120 individuals, has spread to K-12 schools, a university and at least two nursing homes, and as of today, 4 individuals are still hospitalized (several more have since been discharged). Contact tracing is still on-going and the case number from this outbreak still grows, although slower than before. It has resulted in several schools temporarily shutting down to in-class instruction, many businesses closing, and hundreds of individuals now on precautionary quarantine. Prior to this, we had no community spread in Vermont since the spring. All because one selfish idiot felt that his need to play broomball trumped (deliberate use of the term there) the health and safety of everyone else. (I'm also thinking it probably wasn't absolutely vital that people gather to play broom ball...)
The vaccine news is good, but it will take much longer to make a dent in the pandemic if we don't all do our part to prevent spread.

Hasn’t that always been the plan? It’s always been a straw man argument that people thought mitigation efforts would result in zero infections. The plan has always been (and still is) to reduce spread and contain the virus as much as possible until a vaccine is ready.

To piggyback on your last paragraph, I thought it was wise of our president elect to temper expectations when he tried to remind the people that it will still be months to widespread distribution. In other words, we can’t take the masks off tomorrow.
Hopefully that message gets reiterated throughout the media after today’s well-deserved elation wears off and reality sets in again.

Agreed on this. We can finally see the potential of real exit from this pandemic. If anything it should inspire people to hang on a little longer. Delay doing something now that can lead to more spread for 6 months or less and you can do it safely. A lot of people were pushing for relaxing or no restrictions because “we can’t live like this forever“ but now we have a likely ballpark ending timeframe. Just “live like this“ for a little longer and its also past due time that the federal government passes the new relief bill. Make sure people negatively impacted by restrictions are taken care of for a little longer. Much easier to stomach that type of bail out when it’s limited in time.
