I don't know what Sirwalterraleigh wrote as I ignore him but yeah I'm fine with those willing to take risks going to house parties without masks or social distancing. However those same people should stay away from high risk individuals unless the high risk individual is okay with taking the same risk.

You can't police everyone and you can't force everyone to have your same set of beliefs and values. The young and healthy shouldn't be forced to isolate like those who are high risk. Hell, even high risk people shouldn't be FORCED to isolate. It should be up to the person and then they have to accept any consequences of their behavior.

Maybe everything should just open up 100%. Fine those that refuse to comply and ban all those silly masks while we're at it. The economy would be cooking in no time

How do you enforce keeping the people who choose to engage in high risk behaviors away from the at risk population? It sounds good as a theory but how does that actually work? So if I want to go to a party and not wear a mask I can but then I have to quit my job because I work with someone who is high risk? I can’t eat in a restaurant because my server is high risk and so is the guy at the next table? I can’t ride a bus or train because someone riding with me is high risk? I can’t go to WDW because there are both CMs and other guests in the high risk group? This would have to be an honor system where we would have to trust that people would do this, yet some of the people advocating for a plan like this are openly saying they think they should be allowed to do whatever they want, it’s their choice, so how do we trust they will avoid all contact with the high risk population? How would they even know who was high risk?

For it to work there needs to be a repeat of the spring. Not keeping things open that may be expensive or inconvenient to close.

Which is why I said everything non-essential needs to close.

We had this sort of stringent lockdown earlier in the year. Due to that (and strict border controls) we have managed to have a relatively normal summer. Even now we are only at 11 cases and have no on island restrictions.
Also Australia seems to be doing well with its cases.

For Halloween in my neighborhood most people set out candy on tables. The majority of them had placed the candy in individual bags. That's a whole other level of work compared to a typical Halloween just to pass out candy to kids. A number of folks were sitting outside greeting the kids and directing them to the candy while keeping their distance. And it didn't matter what sign was in their yard. Adults and kids out trick-or-treating were almost universally wearing masks. Basically, people went out of their way to ensure that kids had a good and safe time. It was awesome.

So maybe if we can just get candy involved in the Covid response we'd be fine.

All this is flawed. People can be infected and spread the virus without even being aware of it. So Joe goes to a party maskless, picks up the virus, but doesn't have any symptoms. He goes to work the next day and infects his coworker, Bruce, who has been being extremely careful, as he's older and at high risk for severe symptoms. Now all of Bruce's efforts at protecting himself have been for nothing...because Joe made his choice for him.

It just doesn't work the way you'd like it to.

If Bruce is being careful, how does he catch it from Joe? I would think Bruce comes into contact with all sorts of folks (like Joe who is reckless, or like himself, very careful). If Bruce is truly being careful it shouldn’t matter what Joe or Sam in the next cubical does on the weekends.

People call me stupid and disagree with me all the time (and are right at times too)...but you just move on. This is for fun, conversation and occasionally even information. Why “block”?

Time conservation. I blocked 2 people and can get up to speed in this thread in half the time. Maybe I am being childish, but I found myself getting drawn into petty arguments with people who post only to talk about themselves, talk about/insult other posters or do nothing more than agree or disagree with what others say.

This is the most selfish, foolish, and short-sighted response I've seen when it comes to the pandemic. "You've got to live your life!" Is nonsense. We're all living our lives! It's those who insist that "living their lives" means not doing for their part to reduce the spread of the virus that are prolonging the need for restrictions and endangering others.

Are you not able to see that the actions of some have implications for all, or do you just not care?

This sounds like great advice, unless you are the at risk person who dies because they got it from a person who just chose to "live their life".

I wish there was an eye roll emoji. There's no point in trying to have a discussion with people who feel this way. Let's just lock down for a few years. Then we'll all really be living life.

That’s how we all did Halloween too. Lots of tables and individual bags or just candy laid out. This way there was no contact between kids and the person giving out the candy. All of the adults either wore masks or stayed inside to avoid direct exposure. I was very impressed. I think we tend to focus on the outliers in a lot of cases. The vast majority of people actually want to do the right thing and given the choice will. One of the biggest issues I’ve found is the conflicting message of what is the right thing. When people at the highest level of government are peddling conspiracy theories and flat out lies it just muddies the water. I still believe if we had a consistent message from day 1 we would be in a world of better shape. I just hope the nation can come together if/when a vaccine comes out and support it’s use across the board. I fear politics again could greatly damage the prospects of a vaccine if one side or the other decides to attack the vaccine and attack the science behind it in an effort to destabilize the country because they don’t hold power. We need to rise above that.
