I don't know of any state that made a distinction between big box stores and mom & pop stores. The distinction was normally between essential and non-essential stores. This was necessary early on because the number of cases was increasing rapidly, a lot of health care systems were not prepared for it, and we didn't know much about the virus and how it spreads. Non-essential businesses were closed in an attempt to keep people home as much as possible and slow the spread. I am not sure if there is any place that still have non-essential retail closed, but I think we have learned enough that those sorts of closing are not necessary unless things really start to get out of control again.

We were led to understand that Targets and Walmarts were to remain open because they had grocery items and were deemed essential, as danln_2000 also notes. We were additionally led to believe that initially, the non-grocery parts of these stores were not open. Did they close mom and pop grocery stores? When a vaccine comes out, do we risk anti-vaxxers and others refusing to be vaccinated?

I don’t disagree on your point about Target and Walmart vs mom and pop stores but I’ve seen no indication that any state is planning full stay at home orders again. That was definitely a blunt tool used in the beginning because we didn’t have the knowledge or data to know what was safe and not safe. I think it’s perfectly reasonable for retail stores to remain open as long as they have mask policies and distancing in the stores and I don’t see them being closed again unless things got really bad. It’s a great example of keeping the vast majority of the economy open but with restrictions. Same goes for construction, medical offices and theme parks like WDW along with many other businesses who have adapted to remain safe. We still can’t have concerts or sporting events with packed stands, we still shouldn’t have bars and clubs with no masks and no distancing. The vast majority of the economy can remain open and the better the case numbers the better the businesses will do.

I disagree that businesses should have to make decisions on public health. While Disney is doing a great job they also have deep pockets and financial independence so they aren’t worrying about going under. There are plenty of examples where the government steps in to place safety and public health restrictions on businesses. If left up to the businesses they wouldn’t make the same call. I work in the power industry and I can tell you for sure that businesses shouldn’t be the sole decider on things related to public health. The government should set public health requirements and then its up to the business to decide how to comply. If you ask most bar owners they are going to want to be open with no restrictions but that’s not in the best interest overall.

I think we agree on a lot. Yes, the government should provide guidelines. Where we disagree is how far the government reach should extend. Many businesses that were closed (and in my state it was a long time before a lot could open) should have been allowed to open within the guidelines.

I also think we could have slightly more open than what we have with restrictions/guidelines but I'm sure others would disagree.

Yes, that is correct but in my state this was way too slow and very draconian. My governor acted like a dictator and very much overstepped is authority. We are definitely as a country in a better place in terms of how much is open but for my state it too way too long for some of these ridiculous rules to be lifted. They could have been lifted much earlier and many businesses & people wouldn't have suffered as much.

Only a few places tried to close non-essential areas of department stores and hypermarkets. It generally did not work. It was more than just the grocery section that qualified stores like Target and Walmart. These stores also carry school, business and home repair supplies that were also considered essential.

In most states they allowed non-essential items to be sold at Target and WalMart too. To my knowledge no mom and pop grocery stores were closed. We used the independent store near me almost exclusively as it was less crowded and had better selections or meat and breads because it flew under the radar.

Fear of a vaccination is a real threat. The key here is to make the process as transparent as possible, have leaders from both parties embrace a safe and effective vaccine even if their “old white dude” loses this election, and educate people as much as possible. People need to keep pointing out the science and the safety around the vaccine and not resort to name calling or personal attacks that only make people dig in further. Everyone has the right to believe what they want, but in this instance I for one will do my best to change people’s minds or at least help set their mind at ease by pointing out reputable sources of info. We don’t need 100% participation but we need as many people as possible to agree to get it. It’s our best and fastest path to a return to some level of normal life.

Yes, it is. Anyone who has read the hundreds of news reports and studies and followed the changes in CDC recommendations knows this. There are EXPERTS making the calls here because you are basing your suggestions on what you WANT, not science.

I don't recall any requirement in my state that the non-grocery parts of those stores be closed, the would be logistically difficult and hard to monitor and enforce. In my state, small mom and pop grocery stores, delis and convenience stores were open.

I know what you are trying to say, but I think maybe better phrasing would be "if you are ABLE to pay 2020 prices..."

The point is (and it’s been battled on boards for years)...there is an economic reality to the customer base...

Not the Rockefellers...more “new”...but there are expectations that usually hold true.

Compliance would be one in my completely inexperienced opinion.
