Florida’s coronavirus recovery won’t be as bad as Great Recession, state economists say

The state’s economic projection relies on a few big assumptions. It assumes a vaccine will be available to the public by next summer, and that the state won’t see a second recession — which some economists predict. The projection also doesn’t account for a severe natural disaster, such as a hurricane, that could wipe out the state’s reserves.

Even with those assumptions, Florida’s tourism sector is expected to recover slowly, starting next summer. Tourists who fly into the state, including those from oversees, won’t start visiting Florida until a year after a vaccine is released, Baker said. She said the estimate is based on studying previous disease outbreaks.

“Our belief is that tourism is going to take two to three years to recover, and it will be the longest-recovering sector that we have,” Baker said.

what's interesting is that most European countries have been mandating masks for months yet they are seeing a second wave. It seems the virus is gonna virus until we get that dang vaccine

It’s almost like they are on a similar path that we were a few months ago. Reopened. People started moving around more, especially the younger ones. Now they are starting to get infected and they are worrying about the young passing it on to the elderly.

I have been avoiding my high risk and elderly friends/family since this started. I know in some cases you live together, which makes it more complicated.

Incidentally, Sweden is not spiking. I am very interested to see the studies in 2021/2022 after this over.

If Europe doesn't stop this second spike, their death rate will catch up to the U.S.

So what exactly is the expectation regarding vaccination? Ideally a vaccine will be mass-produced and hopefully available in early 2021? Then what? Allow a couple months to give Americans the opportunity to get the vaccine if they desire? Then local and state governments will allow businesses (including Disney of course), churches, schools, sports teams, etc. to operate completely without restrictions regarding capacity, social distancing, or face masks? Is this the correct line of thinking here?

The vaccine itself shouldn't really have an impact on the restrictions, it should still be based on the statistics we are currently using, case count, death rate, positivity rate, etc. The vaccine is just one more tool to help reduce these numbers.

I think things will be much better in the next few months. There are several vaccines in the works, and my State has been doing much better recently. Definitely holding out hope for a family visit to WDW with our new grandson next May!

I read the article on the CDC study, and it really is very limited. The study involved only 314 people and didn’t distinguish between indoor and outdoor dining or consider the precautions in place at the restaurants. It’s unclear to me whether the study excluded people who also visited bars. There was a suggestion that people who dine at restaurants these days are more likely to be out and about in places other than restaurants.

The study is valuable information, but I don’t think people should just conclude from it that they’re twice as likely to get COVID if they go out to eat. There are so many other factors involved.
