Disney Skyliner shutdown and evacuation - October 6 2019

Sure. But there's a big difference between measured, negative info about an event and "the sky is falling", "so much for the Skyliner", "see, I told you Disney made a big mistake!"

Exactly! Am I happy about what happend last night, of coruse not! I feel badly for everyone who was up there( there HAD to be a WFTV reproter up there, now WFTV is going to hate the Skyiner! sigh) I also feel badly for WDW getting all the bad press after a week of everybody loving the addition!

I just hope people won't make WDW close thje Skyliner for good! It's a special form of transportation than just a Bus!

Some agencies have fees, some don’t.

I don't think City of Orlando fire dept just " volunteers their services " to help another area outside of their responsibilities because of the goodness of their heart without sending them a bill.

I never said this is a good thing. This is something that should never happen, the issue I take is when people think they can be funny and actively say something along the lines of see I told ya these things were death traps, or how is the A/C problem now? These are just frankly reactions that most people don’t have when an accident occurs. The #1 thing here that most people should be concerned with is making sure that everyone is ok, not that Disney fails again.

Oh, and its impossible to provide a perfect world.

I'll grant you the perfect world. More accurately, if they are charging champagne and caviar prices, they need to stop delivering beer and pretzel service.

How people are freeking out right here is amazing I am living in cologne and we had 2 accidents with our cable car in very short time frame. Both times really difficult because it’s above the heavy flowing river rhine were you definitely can’t swim... and guess what: it’s up and running again. These things happen but aren’t as tragic as it’s displayed right here. It’s just very difficult to evacuate (in the case of cologne more than 6 hours). But that’s the only issue. Car/bus accidents can happen as well as monorails accidents happen... and the potential risk is much higher

As someone who is not particularly fond of heights - I would have lost my stuff if I were asked to evacuate in those scissor trucks.

May I make the suggestion that the "emergency kits" also include 2 shots of single malt whisky for those in my situation.

Maybe it’s just part of the current times we live in.

I'm not wildly sympathetic to the complaint about still having to have a bag check, but some snacks and at least a bus waiting backstage to take people to the Epcot parking lot would have been appropriate. Maybe it wouldn't be feasible to have Minnie vans available for everyone, but I'd think a bus to the parking lot and busses transporting everyone onward from there would be doable and good service.

Every fire and police agency in Florida has Interlocal Agreements specifying just that- mutual assistance.

Listened to a BBC podcast about the moon landing (13 minutes to the moon,I think it was called). There was one episode where they talked about the average age of many in mission control was something like 26. How could we ever trust something so dangerous as running the skyline to college kids;-)

Perhaps this goes without saying, but gondola systems are being increasingly and effectively used as public transport systems in major cities around the world. We're not seeing monorail and people mover systems springing up in the same way. Monorails are cool, but I don't think many people would argue they are a model of efficiency when it comes to transporting large numbers of people. I think even Bob Gurr said something to that effect. So, it really made a lot of sense to consider a gondola system at WDW.

The fact that these systems work so effectively day in, day out in places like Medellin, Mexico City, and La Paz but couldn't go six days at Walt Disney World without a significant incident should be rather embarrassing for both Disney and Doppelmayr.

What major cities have multiple stop gondola systems in use as peoplemovers?

And why do you say monorails aren’t effecient as peoplemovers? They work great in Japan, Vegas, etc.

I don’t care if it’s monorail, lightrail, etc.

I think this is a example of poor customer service. Granted, I think Disney was completely unprepared for this disaster. But I do agree, they should have had a bus pick people up and disperse them to various points of drop off. The gift card is the food. But keep in mind, if this happened at 11pm, by the time they got back to the resorts the food courts would be closed. I feel sorry for Disney this is not publicity they needed. Ironically I am hearing more about this today then I did about star wars land when it opened and I live in Orlando.

If the park hadn't been closed by then, I would agree, but it was closed. At the minimum they should have been escorted through.

Does this change anyone's thoughts about riding on future visits? I know rides break down all the time...but this is kind of scary.

My family and I are going in December. One of my group will be in an ECV, so this incident does make me pause a little bit. How much room is in the cabin if one person is on a scooter? How difficult is it to evac someone in a scooter? Can you access the emergency supplies if there’s a scooter in the way?
I’m very sure I’m overthinking this right now, but I will follow this story before making an informed decision to ride.

That is just for starters. Once the ambulance chasers and media starts talking to the affected guests and about their pain and suffering, the incentive pot to keep them happy may get more interesting..

I agree with others that they will get more compensation. I think the gift cards and passes was just to get them through the night. But truth be told, this was a traumatic experience. Different than being stuck on the monorail or a boat. I think the only thing close would be getting stuck on a coaster.
