I bought Huck Finn for my older 2 for a school literary project. They hated it. They had a dialect problem also. I tried reading it myself and just couldn’t get into it. I bought Animal Farm instead and it went over better. That is not a good book for an almost 8 year old, but it was fine for my 14 and 16 year old.
I didn't care for reading when I was younger. I don't remember ever reading anything of depth until High School. Even then it was mostly James Bond paperbacks. I used to even do book reports on those books. My father could never pass up one of those "club" things and signed up for a book club. He loved reading. One day when just casually looking through a new shipment of books he had received I happened upon a book by Robert Wilder entitled "Wind from the Carolina's" I read the first page and had to continue. It is a historical fiction about a family the lived in the Carolina's at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. He was a plantation owner and he decided to move everything, his entire plantation, including his house to a piece of land in the Bahama's on Great Exuma. It went to 6 or so generations of the same family eventually ending back in the Carolina's again. It was fascinating and it started the ability for me to actually picture the story in my head while reading the words. Apparently, I wasn't able to do that early on. I have read that book, I don't know how many times. Even to the point of my first one falling apart. A friend of mine was able to locate another copy on line that was still holding together. It never escapes my thoughts that I now live in the Carolina's. Not sure if it's just coincidence or not.

I have a grandson that hates to read and I have offered it to him to read if he wanted too. He still hasn't wanted to. He is going into 11th grade next fall and planning on college after. We are all trying to get the message across that there will be a lot of reading in college and maybe he would be doing himself a favor to get in the habit now. That was about the time that I found that book.

I just looked up that book on Amazon. It does sound like an immersive read. The reviews were great. I put it on my wish list so I don’t forget it.

Ha ha.. I don’t know the joke.. but it was definitely a culture shock at first. I actually love Cincinnati now though.. there really is a lot to do here.. And we’re bordered by Kentucky and Indiana.. so it’s imposible to be stuck.. we have no choice but to cross a bridge at some point ;)

Oh.. great suggestion!!!!

I bought him Adventures of Huckleberry Finn around this time last year, but he had a little trouble with the dialect in the book.

His favorites the past year have been- Captain Underpants, he’s completed that series.. now he’s on the third book of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.

I HATE both of them!!! Hate hate hate. They’re junk. But the kids love them.

We buy or borrow a lot of culture and history books as well, he hasn’t shown an interest in too many classic yet :(. I’m trying to get him to absorb more than the carp in both of those HORRIBLE series. Oh, one positive, he did read The Little Prince and enjoyed that.

I had the Babysitter’s Club books when young.. but I still loved the classic books. I’m hoping he will be the same.

My son enjoyed the Hank the Cow Dog series, and books by Daniel Pinkwater - but they all had humorous plots, so might not appeal. They might also be out of print. I especially enjoyed reading some of The Hank the Cow Dog books out loud - using different voices for the characters. I chose them as a better, IMO, series than Captain Underpants.

Okay, conundrum here, so of course, I must ask internet peeps.

The laptop I want was on sale for $50 off. I felt like I could do better, so I waited on it. Now it's $100 off. Do I jump, or wait and hope it goes down further???
Depends..

Is a new model coming soon? Because if yes, the price might go down even more.

Right now there is a huge shift in products..
AMD is about to launch their Zen+ architecture.. ( Pinnacle Ridge ), also just released their intel + AMD Vega graphics embedded for laptops tech as well.

Meh, I'm waiting for this year's replacement for the surface pro, so I can buy the model 5 on discount. :P

It doesn't appear so from the manufacturer's website. They're not advertising the next model up.

I do have a work laptop that I drag home a lot, but I don't keep it at home. So if I don't plan on working from home, it stays at work. I also do a lot of personal stuff on my laptop, so I really need my own computer instead of just using my work one for everything. Not to mention my work computer is also Windows 7 and only has 4 GBs of ram
Yikes! that is pretty ancient!

I definitively would go for the cheaper one that has a NVME or a SSD drive.

On laptops the main limitation as always been the memory capacity and hard disk speed.

Anyway, what laptop are you looking at right now?

Omg.. between this and the pin code.. it’s killing me to stick to my guns and NOT do Disney this year. I’ve been avoiding trip reports to avoid the temptation as well. I have to stay strong!!
Reminds me.. Sometimes my friends and family tell me I look goofy when I ride rollercoasters..
Why? I have one hand in the front bar and one trying to hold my hearing processor while smiling like an idiot :hilarious::hilarious:

(Ie, I never get my hands up.. I got the scare of my life once when I was told to do not hold the bar by my friends. All while dropping from these "drop down" towers.. I actually felt like I was slowly slipping away from the restraining and secure bar and my butt left the seat by a pretty wide distance.. NEVER AGAIN. )

Right, I forgot her name. She will always be the Anne I picture when I think of Anne of Green Gables. Someday I hope to go to PEI, it looked beautiful in that movie.
Not being female, I never heard of Anne until my wife and daughters convinced me that we should go to PEI and see Green Gables. You want to talk about someone that was upset when he found out that Anne didn't even exist and was just a character in a novel by L.M. Montgomery. The house (Green Gables) was said to be the place where L.M. lived as a child, but, put this character in. I don't know if it was based on her life or not, she said it was not her. My wife and kids enjoyed it, but, me being the curmudgeon that I have always been could only shake my head when after paying for a tour, could not even get inside the house but had to look through the windows and be told that if Anne had been real that would have been her room.

Over the years the area had changed and a golf course was built around the house. I have the distinct pleasure of accidentally bouncing a golf ball of one of those green gables. Perhaps I could write a sequel titled "Bouncing a Golf Ball off Green Gables. The sea food around there was terrific though. Try the Haddock.

That would be a hysterical book, especially how you wrote the post. You had me laughing. And oh, it is so sad that it is now the backyard of a golf course. Hmmm, I always thought Anne lived on the second floor.

Well, since she is imaginary we can imagine her any place we like and still be right. I do remember being told exactly what I told you. I never read the book and no one ever asked about that at the time.

I made bread, black bean burgers, and thanks to your earlier post, homemade veggie dogs. :)
This sounds so good!
That was why we could never move to W. Virginia. ;)
Glad to see that someone understands! ;)
I also made a white bean veggie loaf and zucchinni fritters. One of the angles asked if I was making them fries:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:
This sounds delicious too!

Ha ha!! I’d agree with that meme for anything inbetween Greater Cincinnati and Cleveland.. with the exception of Columbus, which is a super cool city.

Where I live is relatively flat, I’m just north of Cincy.. I think my ‘city’ is called “Ohio’s Playground” or something, there’s definitely a ton to do here, as well as Cincy and NKY. The closer you get to Cincinnati the more hills you get though.. steep hills actually. When I first moved here we were renting while home hunting, and lived in an area called Mt. Adams. Omg the road to get to my house was STEEP!! It freaked me out because I was so used to the flatness of Florida! I know people hated driving behind me.. I would go sooooooo slow around bends, and on the roads in general. Total grandma driver when in those areas.:hilarious:

Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll look into those as well!

Lol!!
I’m so lucky that I never died as tween/teen from acting stupid on a rollercoaster. There’s a coaster at Kings Island (our local park) called “The Racers”, it used to be two racing coasters- 1 forward facing, 1 backwards. (Sadly they both face forward now.
So anyway, when I was 12 or so my friends and I came up with a great idea. We would always ride in the last seat of the backwards Racer. We’d stand up as far as we could when reaching the top of the hill.. as we went over the hill our thighs (near our knees) would slam into the bar from how airborne we were. We’d laugh and do it over and over during the ride, even though it was technically against the rules.

I am SO GLAD that my son will never have the opportunity to be as stupid as I was.
Today the restraints are nothing like they were during my youth.
