Funny, other than the Scarlet O'hara, etc., types ;) from back then, I've actually never pictured women from then (actually, more women and men - to me, anyway - appear more "weak and squeamish" in recent times) being that way at all (and, even "poor" Scarlet
ended up being pretty tough towards the end ;)). They were tough as nails from most accounts. If you think about the times and conditions for the vast majority of people in the world over all of time, until comparatively recently, life was pretty tough.
I can only relate my firsthand experience with both of my grandmothers on their farms. They liked frilly things and dressing up nice for church and stuff, but, make no mistake, when it came right down to it (and, they would both ask God to forgive me for posting this :angelic:) they were both bada$$es and had no problem keeping up with my grandfathers. Same with my mom and pop, for the most part.

Bottom line, most soldiers probably didn't get that "descriptive" in their letters back home, but, I have no problem imagining a woman from back in that time being able to more than handle it.
Oh I totally think the women back then were able to handle it. But you think about all the literature from the 1800s, when women were fainting all over and needed "the vapors", and women who were pregnant were thought to be "in a delicate condition", etc. I personally think it's a crock of hooey...they had numerous children, a lot of whom died young...they HAD to be tough, because as you said, life was tough. But you wouldn't swear around a lady, or use rough talk or tell bawdy jokes...those were only for the men, and I was just surprised by how candid the letter was, being written to a lady.

Good morning all! Another cool and rainy morning here. I'm trying to enjoy the calm morning because the next few days will not be calm, but in a good way. My niece is coming to visit until Sunday, she is 12 and easy going but still keeping her entertained is fun but tiring. Our town festival is this weekend so that includes some stuff to do. I think we will take her to the Arborteum, she will like all the plants and flowers. She also likes eating at the bar in our town, they have really good food, and tonight is $2 taco night (huge tacos). My niece's favorite food is tacos so she will be beyond thrilled!
That sounds fun!! Is it just her, then? I can't imagine sending my kids to my brother without me, but then I guess it's a bit different with an international flight involved. My DD would LOVE to go stay for a bit with him, though, and babysit her little cousin. And my BIL would probably have her working with him in the garden and she'd have the time of her life. DS, not so much. He'd get annoyed with my niece pretty quickly.

Yeah, just my niece she is an only child and only lives about 45 minutes away. She has been coming to stay at our house a few times a year since she was potty trained. My sister actually used that as bait. My niece wanted to have sleep-overs at our house but my sister said she couldn't until she was a big girl and didn't need diapers at all. She usually stays with about 3 times a year, in January/February for a weekend, then for a few days in June and August. It didn't work out in June this year though. Too bad you couldn't just send your DD to visit your brother's family, but that's a long way to go on her own but maybe when she is older.

Oh, she's already talking exchange program and she's only 11. She is hopefully going to do a dual immersion English/Dutch program for high school next year, and they do a lot of school trips to English speaking countries, but mostly in the UK. (who knows how that will be affected now with Brexit?) So an exchange program to the US would be right up her alley and I could certainly see her staying with some friends or family there. She's very mature and driven for her age, so I wouldn't have to worry about her really. We'll see. DS is a lot less independent, but he's also only 9...we'll see how he's doing in a few years when he's had some therapy to learn how to do things himself. He's very intelligent, just needs to learn how to plan and execute that plan. He's got a very logical mind and isn't good with grey areas or abstract thinking. DH told me they were doing logic puzzles while I was at work the other night, and it's one of those things where they say "Your friend is being held behind one of these doors. The white door is in the middle, the red door is to the left of where your friend is being held, the green door is two away from the white door"etc....and you have to figure out where your friend is. So my husband is writing it down and DS says "Daddy, I know it! He's behind the blue door." and DH is like...ok, I'll write that down...and he continues to write the clues and such and he gets to the end and DS was right, without looking at the notes or anything...he just did it all in his head and had it before my husband could even get it with the notes, and DH is really good with those puzzles. He had it narrowed down to 2 possibilities and DS had already solved it long before. So he's really good with processing information in his head and recognizing those patterns. But he is pretty helpless with day to day stuff that other kids his age do. I get really nervous thinking about him going to high school in just 2 years. (Well, jr. high, but it's all one here) The idea of sticking him on a plane to the US by himself is TERRIFYING. At this point, I don't see him doing an exchange program. (He DID try to correct MY English pronunciation the other day...I was like "kid, you can't even pronounce the th sound...I'm pretty sure you got nothing on me in the pronunciation of English words." The word was "baths". He's like, "It's bavs!" Um....no.)
