He can't get any parents to help chaperone the lock in with him. Church policy is to have two adults at a youth event at all times. He is going to try to convince some people tonight at the lent service. If they say no he has to cancel.

Reading was the early I-phone! I remember when we did our first road trip from Vermont to Florida (WDW). My girls were 7 and 9 years old. Both avid readers** so their faces were stuck in books all 1500 miles. This was our first trip into the south and back then there were a lot of things to see. Crop sharers shacks, Tobacco fields and drying barns, live Oaks and Spanish Moss... just generally a lot of different terrains and buildings.

I'd point something out and they would pause briefly to look up and within 2 seconds were back to reading. I think reading is great, but, there are also other things to actually see and not just read about.

I have to stifle myself when I read posts where people ask, "what things do you bring to keep the kids amused while in a queue line?" We talked to each other, pointed out things of interest and, with a little pride, taught them patience and the ability to get lost in their own thoughts. Never had a single complaint from them unless there was, back to the hotel, pool time pending. I really believe that they would have traded every moment at WDW for an hour in the pool. And the weird thing was we had a 24 foot above ground pool at home. Go figure. My grandchildren spend most of their waking hours with their noses buried in their electronic device. (Even the 5 year old. She could find and startup her own Netflix programs at age 3.)
**They loved Dave Barry and would read his stuff, out loud, to each other, and of course, by default all of us. Sort of an early "Books on Tape" situation. One of us, I think it was one of them, on later WDW road trips, had the forethought to bring the question cards from the original "Trivial Pursuit" game. That gave all of us something to occupy our minds on those long stretches of travel.

Morning! Just got back from my dtr. Well, the bp was down and my bloodwork came in great. :)No problems there causing my bp to rise. So we are just taking care of my asthma problem and watching the bp. Going to take singulair in addition to the flonase and emergency inhaler. If that doesn't help by Friday, since I have been using the inhaler 2-3 times a day for the last 2 weeks, we will start a daily inhaler. He definitely heard a lot of wheezing though. But, I feel so much better knowing exactly what this is. He said I should start feeling better with breathing by Friday. Yayyy for meds! And I never thought I would ever say that! :p

Oh I'm so sorry...I think we stole your nice Spring weather...it was lovely here today, if a bit windy, but if it's any consolation, it went to a good cause. I had to take my son to the dentist by bike today and he's slow as molasses in January even when it's PERFECT weather...put rain in and I'd never have gotten him off the school grounds. So my need was great. You can have the nice weather for now...I'm done with it until Saturday...my MIL's birthday. She always has 50-60 guests and they won't all fit inside, so we need to be able to sit outside, too.

Ha...my family was a singing family. Yes....we were "those" people. We also played license plate bingo, but I doubt that would work in the UK...I don't know how your license plates are set up. Over here, the license plate comes with the car, it's not assigned to a specific person and there's no way to tell from it where they are from in the Netherlands. In the states, each state has their own, so we would try to find a car from every state. And we took our time and made a real trip of it, stopping at interesting places like historical landmarks or museums or caves, etc.

I survived taking DS to the dentist for 3 fillings. I'm so glad to be home. It took 10 minutes just to convince him to let them give him the...oh geez...I can't even remember the English word...the shot they give you to make it numb. What in the world is that called? Whatever...so she finally got that in and then it took another 15 minutes to calm him down because in order to get him to agree to having the shots, she said he could choose to do either the top ones or the bottom one today....but she didn't ask me first and it was a pain to make the FIRST two appointments around school and work schedules...I wasn't trying to do a 3rd. He was refusing to even have ONE done today and was angry that we weren't letting him cancel, so he finally agreed to do the top ones and then she did the shots and I said let's just get them done so we don't have to go through this AGAIN. And he freaked. So we ended up having to call daddy so he could try to calm him down. NOT a good experience. But they are done and once he calmed down, it went super fast and even he agrees it wasn't bad. He just HATES the shots to numb it and he was mad that I made her break her promise, but I wasn't letting him call the shots. I should probably send the Dentist some flowers or something for dealing with him. He is NOT an easy patient. Fortunately everyone made it through relatively unscathed. Now....where's my booze?

That sounds like quite the ordeal. I'm glad it all worked out and yes you deserve a drink or 3.
