This headline is earth-shattering! Who woulda thunk?

I never gave weekend homework because I firmly believe that everyone deserves the weekend off. I caught a lot of flack for that, but I didn't cave about it. Then proof was in the pudding when my students' performance was higher than it ever had been, not only in the stupid standardized tests, but in regional competitions, entry testing for high schools, and just in general reasoning skills. I gave them time in class to start nightly homework too, so I could help them if they were still confused. Yeah, I'm a rebel.

Especially with math. In every math class I've had the only times when we didn't get homework was when we took a test. Students get burned out quickly with that and soon their effort and care starts to drop, along with their performance. My high school lacked good math teachers, though. My geometry teacher was the worst teacher in the building. Kind of surprising how she is a physical education major, with a math minor.

I had a really good math teacher in high school - in fact he was the reason I majored in math. He worked us hard, but he always made it make sense to us, and that's more than half the battle.

My geometry teacher was also my algebra 1 teacher. I had a separate teacher for alg 2/trig, and he was probably best of the three math teachers, but he was so monotone and boring. Then my senior year I took "advanced algebra topics" with the third math teacher, and he just doesn't really teach (just kind of does the problem) and doesn't really care if you get it or not. He's almost too smart to teach to high schoolers. The only good math teacher I can remember would be my 7th grade one, who sounds like the teacher you described. She had twins during the school year and missed a good chunk of time, leaving us with a sub who would assign us 80 problems a night. My grades went from As to Cs/Ds during that time period.
