When you're the leader, you don't have to follow.
Also 70th anniversary of the Canadian-British-American landings on the Normandy beaches.
I was going to share this story I saw on the news last night, but forgot.

A Canadian D-Day veteran was being interviewed about that day. With tears in his eyes, he shared his memories of seeing so many of his friends mowed down. The gist of what he said is that they didn't cry out for God as they lay dying, every single one of them cried for "their mommy".

Made me cry too.

The interview was hosted by Tom Brokaw, so it may have been an excerpt from the new IMAX film, D-Day: Normandy 1944.

My grandpa never told any war stories. My grandpa-in-law was stationed in the Phillipines and was full of them. His two he always told was being granted shore leave then climbing a tree to get a coconut and the time he saw MacArthur in person.
I'm sure if must have worried him immensely when my oldest brother got stationed in Viet Nam and my next oldest one enlisted in the USAF before the draft could get him (he was sent to the MidEast instead), but he never said anything to scare the rest of us.

I don't think I'd be able to watch that... I would be a blubbering mess.

I have a very soft spot for elderly folks, and I think that's due to being raised with my grandparents and taking care of them in their later years, and right before they both died.

There's not a lot of things I can't handle, but elderly abuse and animal abuse are on my 'no' list. And if I see one crying, that's it, I'm done, I'm crying too.

I used to volunteer at a nursing home, and thoroughly enjoyed seeing people who were all but 'abandoned' and making their day... just by sitting there and chatting. I had to stop when my grandfather died.. I couldn't handle it anymore.

I've had two Uncles in Vietnam, distant uncles and cousins in WW2 and even a handful in WW1. My one Uncle has a family collection of medals, weapons, a uniform from the wars...and a belt! I wanna say there's something from the Civil war in there too but it's been a long time since I've seen or asked about it. I do know there are Nazi 'trophies' in the collection- pins and such ripped off of soldiers. I do have photos of them, on my home computer.
