One Little Spark...
That's what I've been trying, but I don't get anything involving texting. It brings me to a screen where they can contact me via another email address (which I have). Then they bring me to a "Google Account Recovery" screen that asks for the last password I remember (which is the password I'm trying to recover), the date I lasted logged in (don't remember), and the month and year that I created the account (May 2008).

Just do the texting option. It's far simpler. Put in your phone number, they'll send you a text (should take 10 - 30 seconds or so) and then type in the number. I've recovered quite a few accounts that way (I won't get into how many youtube accounts I have control over... :P)

I don't see the texting option anywhere. I don't believe it's an option.

One Little Spark...
Considering how many videos you post on here...

I'd say you spend a whole lotta time on youtube

An embarrassing amount, actually. Though, most of the vids I post are either Disney related, or results from direct searches or following trends / following other users and their likes.

If you want to know why...it's actually got a professional application. I monitor youtube for three reasons.

1) SEO and targeted marketing (Search Engine Optimization...which is why I have so many accounts, I have/had clients that used it for marketing campaigns)
2) Google tends to use youtube as a "test bed" for larger modifications, ever since they aquired it (new search algorithms, screen elements, etc)
3) It's fun!

It does help that I have three monitors (2 30" Vizio HDTVs and one 60" Samsung), so I can keep youtube (or other things) on the other one while I do work (or goof off) of this one and watch a movie (or monitor servers, which is actually what it's doing right now) on the third one.

I also spend time every day checking video aggregation sites (like ebaums, bored, wimp, jokeroo), meme sites (like funnyjunk and 9gag), etc...just to keep a finger on trends.
