Hi everyone i know that this is off topic but if you haven't heard 20 kids were killed today in a school. Kinder gardeners. This has led me to believe that no were in America is safe. Is Disney safe anymore or is some lunatic going to start a shooting spree at Disney or some other park. You never would had thought that someone would come in a movie theater and kill people. Yet it happened. Please don't post anything stupid but is Disney safe anymore or will something happen at one of these them parks. FYI they have no metal detectors and if they have planned it they can put a gun on there body. Is it safe anymore?
People view Disney World correctly or incorrectly as one of the safest places in the world. It's a perception that's established when we're there, largely because of how well they remove us from reality. Unfortunately no where is free from evil. People saw Disney as a potential symbol that could be attacked after 9/11, and domestic terrorists could view it as a location to get a higher body count.

I hate that it takes a tragedy like this to get the dialogue going but the reality is it's something we have taken for granted.

Mods, I know this is probably a better topic for the general discussion forum but we all know that the traffic this conversation deserves should be on the News and Rumors section.

Unfortunately, no. No place is really very safe. Some crazy person could arm themselves like this person did and murder a whole bunch of people in the herd waiting for bag check around opening time. In that scenario, the only CMs directly encountered would be the one at the parking booth, and maybe either monorail or ferry CMs if they were at the MK. Even still, someone could hide weapons under their coat well enough that they wouldn't stand out much. I just don't think there's a way to be completely safe.

It's impossible to know what might be around the corner but you also can't allow your life to be dictated by fear and not do the things you enjoy because of that. Nothing on the scale of today's tragedy has ever taken place at a Disney theme park and you have to trust those in charge of the parks to always prioritise guest safety and security about everything else. The sad fact, as today proves yet again, is that there are some very deranged and dangerous people in this world and it is practically impossible to stop some of those people from carrying out atrocities like today. All we can do is be as vigilant as possible and if you're in a Disney park and you see anything at all that concerns you, report it immediately.

It's impossible to completely make a place safe. Especially with the amount of people who go to WDW everyday, but I think we would be surprised how much security there really is at Disney World. They have security that dresses up as everyday guests. I assume they have cameras hidden so that 99.9% of the parks can be seen. Walt Disney World has been my safe place and will continue to be my safe place. As hard as it might be for some people, you can't live your life in constant fear.

I do not feel any more or less safe at WDW than I do anywhere else.

Well, when I visit military bases, I feel a little safer than I do in the rest of the world. Otherwise, every day is a crapshoot.

There are usually orange sheriffs on property at the gates you can use if you have no bags to be searched. I see canine units in the crowds wandering around sniffing. There is a lot more security then you know of, see ,or think about. There is security on the ferries, in the parking lots, just everywhere. There are cameras in parking lots that are monitored. I like to think that if they saw someone putting guns on their person they would stop them right there. There are also tons of costumed cast members that if someone was acting suspicious they would get supervisors and security involved asap.

This made me laugh. I live on a military base and we joke that its the ultimate gated community. I have armed people guarding my house. I get solicitation for security alarm companies all the time. I tell them the only thing I might need is zombie protection. The pizza guy cannot get in. The cable guys cannot get in without work orders. Odd thing though... in the last 2 weeks we have had 2 people crash into the outside barrier wall. This is making us feel more like a target then a safe place. I would totally move off base and live in Disney instead. I would feel less like a target.

I think so. I remember one time I was there with some friends, in the MK. I had placed my bookbag on the back of my friend's wheelchair (he had broken his foot a few days before the trip). Anyway, we were in Pecos Bill's and I realized my bag was gone... Went back to find it in the middle of Pecos and security was examining it... oops? Security there seems to be on the ball. I would say WDW is just as safe as anyplace else that has the kind of security as it does. I know, from working at schools, that schools can be A LOT safer, and I didn't need this tragedy to remind me that.

Afraid it's not just in America. Here in Scotland many years ago,i think it was 1996, a nutter went amok in a small village called Dunblane ( Tennis star Andy Murrays home ) and shot school children at a primary school. Its a sad world we live in.

Is it safe? Safer than outside, yes. But not much. Courtesy bag search to give an impression of safety is about it.
That is it. The bag search is an illusion of safety and nothing more. So the only ones who would plan on doing something bad are going to bring a bag? No chance. You can walk right in with your pockets full and without a second look.

Should I mention the guy who busted up in Epcot with a shotgun, shot at a few security guards, took two of them hostage, and then blew his own head off when confronted by Orange County deputies?

Because that totally happened.

Look the thing is there are nuts everywhere. And sometimes crap does happen. But you cannot, CANNOT be so ruled by fear that you never have fun.

And in all honesty, you're statistically more likely to be killed by one of those Florida drivers on I-4 than you are by gunshots.

I actually lived there during that time and it was the first time I'd ever heard of something like that! I think I was in 4th grade? We literally had armed guards walking us to lunch for weeks after! Our cafe was an outdoor building and we'd have someone leading an following. Granted, we were on a military base, so you KNOW those men knew how to take a threat out, but it was scary as a kid.

Other then that, we didn't talk about it! And then a few years after moving to CO, we had Columbine happen. I was in middle school then and our school was on lockdown the rest of the day.

Such a horrific thing. :(

Yep it happens...can happen anywhere....do I feel safer? Yes some at WDW, but I don't relax my standards of what I do to deter things from happening...I keep my money at a minimum and not accessible to a snatcher....I keep two eyes on my children, and we don't enter or exit a bathroom or secluded area alone. I booked at trip to WDW right after 9/11....felt a bit squrimish but was so glad I did that. It helped overcome my fears.....not letting them dictate your life. When I read that Orlando had perhaps the largest percentage of convicted pedophiles it really didn't surprise me...just reminded me to keep up my guard when at home or on vacation in my favorite place. I figure 98% of park visitors have paid $$$ to be there for the right reasons....the other 2% I rationalize are not probable to be there and in action on the few days I am there....o_O.
Goodness I most likely have more to be wary of driving my eldest to college and negotiating those parking lots....:D. Defensive driving 101.:p

I would like to think that WDW is safe and secure although I'd feel better if security would check strollers a little more carefully and all the bags and whatnot stored under and on them. They open the gate to let them thru, but I never see them check them....
