Al Lutz: "Management must stop bending over to pick up pennies as dollars fly over their heads"

In Al Lutz's new column today, he seems to mount a case against Avatar, saying that fans shouldn't "let Animal Kingdom become Disney’s Florida Adventure."

Perhaps most interesting, however, is his characterization of the current state of WDW and its management team, saying:

"The biggest problem may be that this appears to be the only major project on the immediate horizon for a resort that desperately needs to be freshened up with more new attractions and a major investment in infrastructure. Walt Disney World over the next decade will face some formidable competition from neighboring attractions. Queue enhancements, while nice, can’t compete with new rides. The Resort’s bus transportation system is in dire need of an upgrade or reconfiguration throughout the property. Current management must stop bending over to pick up pennies as dollars fly over their heads."

Can Al Lutz and the rest of the fan community get the attention of TDO?

Al is 100%, completely, and totally right here. I have nothing else to add.

Unfortunately, no. Because for every fan that can look at WDW with a realistic, grounded eye that can see the flaws of the resort, there are 50 WDW fans that will call that person a "hater" or a "doom and gloomer" or tell them never to go again.

There just isn't enough reality in the WDW fan community for them to force a change to happen.

I don't necessarily completely agree with Al in this particular post (although the more I think about Avatar Land, the more I sour on the concept--I still maintain that the story of the movie is irrelevant to the quality of the land...but it is relevant to whether it fits DAK, whether there will be merch. sales, etc.), but I would love to see him writing more Walt Disney World columns.

Say what you will about Al and his supposed vendetta against Walt Disney World (those who visit both coasts likely realize it's not actually a vendetta), but he has an audience and any attention he can bring to the issues at Walt Disney World is a good thing.

I would argue, however, that people like Al have the potential to make a much bigger impact than your average fan. Those who are "in the know" here seem to suggest that Al has very well placed sources.

The bigger question is: does TDO even care or place any importance on his columns, which are read by a large number of fans each day? One would expect that eventually the noise would become too loud for TDO to ignore.

I would like to see him write more about WDW as well. His prominence and connections give him the potential to create a lot of noise about issues that are pressing and important to the long term success of WDW.

Agreed. I would love to see more WDW writing from him. I really enjoy reading his columns that talk about Disneyland Resort Ops and the behind the scenes stuff. If he has, or can get, sources to provide him with similar information on WDW that would really make for some great reading I think.

I'd like to see him write more level headed, sound WDW articles like this, yes. But Al knows that's not his bag, so articles like this will be few and far between. So I wouldn't expect a push from him to get things changed in WDW.

The bigger question is: does TDO even care or place any importance on his columns, which are read by a large number of fans each day? One would expect that eventually the noise would become too loud for TDO to ignore

If he continued writing articles like this and the fanbase became louder in its criticism, they might start listening.

I agree with Al 100% and applaude the execution of the article. He was able to get his point across without sounding negative or bashing the company as a whole. I still believe that Disney already feels this way and will scrap these plans for avatar because of the lack of character and emotion from the films.

Sorry, folks, but Lutz (who is once again wrong and has NO well-placed sources at all) DOES have a vendetta against WDW and it shows.

He continues to kill his own credibility with his overly-snarky and negative attitude.

But you don't need emotion to create a great attraction/land that people would enjoy though.

Wouldn't you think that a major company Disney would care about what their reputation? They've gone from the trendsetters of the world to the joke of it...at some point this is going to come back to haunt them. I think this is a step in the right direction since someone that can actually make some noise is saying something...hopefully this will make enough noise for them to hear

i dont think its them not caring.. i do think that Disney is so big that like our US government there is so much bureaucratic crap that it gets in the way of getting anything done in an efficient way
