Ok so here's the current plan.. leave around 4pm on Thursday..power thru and avoid pretty much any and all rush hour traffic the entire drive down 95.Get to Orlando sometime around 12-1pm on Friday. Find a place to stay overnight.. check into BWI around 8 the next morning..

OR leave Friday morning around 6am.. again avoiding MOST of the rush hour stuff..but arrive in Orlando around 3am..

Or Leave Friday around 9/10am.. hit rush hour stuff near DC..get into Orlando about 7/8am Saturday.. check into BWI..

The "I want vacation NOW" part of me wants to leave Thursday.. and just find a place to sleep friday night. the rational side of me says leave Friday mid morning .. the 6am one I don't really care about..lol

ahhhhh

Hmmm...we leave on Friday around 5:00 p.m. and drive from KY to Macon, GA. We spend the night in Macon and then leave Saturday around 8-9 (we are not early risers!) making it to WDW around 3. I like to be well rested when I arrive at WDW.

We used to drive through the night to get to the beach when the boys were toddlers so they could sleep. We would arrive exhausted and it would take us 2 days to catch up on our sleep. But, we are sleepyheads and need our rest!

I work nights so I won't be the least bit tired..usually on the weekends I don't go to bed from Fri Am until Sunday night.lol.. I am leaning more towards finding a place when we get to orlando and resting..we have 2 non park days ( our BWI days). We def prefer to power thru and drive the whole way at once.

If you are used to staying up late, then heading down at night is probably your best bet. I-95 can be nasty anywhere north of Richmond, VA during rush hour. Best to avoid that traffic if you can. I suspect you'll be so excited to head down that you won't be able to sleep anyway. Hopefully you have someone to share the driving with.

How about leaving a little later, perhaps 7 PM on Thursday? Again, there's the excitement factor so it might be hard to just sit around for 3 hours waiting for rush hour to end.

Actually y husband does all the driving..I don't drive on the highways. I have a feeling we are going to head out at 4.. it makes it so we avoid all rush hour traffic.. we will just have to find a place to stay on Friday

Based on your travel plans, it might be best to scope out 3 or 4 possible places to stay before you arrive. Once you get there, head to a resort like Art of Animation. (Just tell the gate you want to look at the new resort, it's really cool.) If you have an electronic device, you'll be able to get free Internet access. Then book your hotel online so you can get a discounted rate. (Many hotel charge "rack rate" for walk-ins.) This also gives you a chance to explore the new resort and have lunch at the food court. We've done this a few times while staying offsite. The guards at the gates always let us in when we tell them we want to eat at the resorts.

As much as I would want to leave early, I would leave Friday. The only thing with that is this - although you want to check in at 8 a.m., they might not have a room ready for you. So after that big long drive, you might not have a place to lie down and rest until the room is ready.

This is the only part I've got when it comes to upcoming vacations------ rationality does not stand a chance.
If it was me I'd be trying to find some way to leave now!!!

We always leave around midnight and arrive around 1-2pmEST. I prefer to drive at night with less traffic. The downside is that it's hard to see the state troopers and I always have a fear of hitting a deer.

we have a 21+ hour drive...so no matter when we leave we will be driving in the dark at some point. We are very used to this drive though. I am stil not sure what we are going to do.. I guess we wait and see right?

Holy crap. Not sure I could do a 21 hour drive in one shot. I absolutely hate long distance driving, and I'm always glad to get our 12 hour drive finished each trip. My wife was trying to insist that we drive for our upcoming trip to DL, but I explained to her that no way in Hades would I spend 26 hours driving.

We do this drive every year.. we actually fully enjoy it. We are driving to DL in 2-3 years.. but that trip is over 7000 miles total and more than 6 DAYS of total driving :)
