The Hobbit at Disney?

At any point was this ever considered?

The movie rights have been a mess between New Line and MGM and the Tolkien family.

Any chance of a hobbit themed area coming to the parks?

As much as I would love to see LOTR and the Hobbit associated with Disney, I highly doubt it, just because it doesn't fit too well with the 'younger' crowd. But who knows? weirder stuff has happened.

I don't know how much the Tolkien heirs are sticking to his wishes, but In a letter from 1937 that discussed illustrations for an American publication of The Hobbit, Tolkien stated the he would " . . .veto anything from or influenced by the Disney Studios (for all whose works I have a heartfelt loathing)."

Granted, money speaks and given enough financial incentive accommodations would sure be made. :)

Heheh. Considering that Peter Jackson seems to have already cribbed from Disney's "Mulan" for "The Return of the King," I think Tolkien's heirs can get over it.

LOTR hit the rumor mill a few years back for inclusion in an updated Great Movie Ride. It as never clear how reliable that information was however.

A dazzling white replica of Minas Tirith using forced perspective, rises behind Fantasyland where Pixie Hollow would have been....Lord of the Rings attraction. Bam. I wish.

I started a similar thread awhile back and I admit I'm guilty of morphing it into a referendum on the literary merits of LotR vs Harry Potter. My personal belief is that the world of Middle-earth is rich enough for an entire theme park (whether at Disney or elsewhere). The attraction possibilities are endless:

Moria mine cart w/ Balrog encounter
Flight of the Nazgul
Horse Lords of Rohan
Paths of the Dead

etc. etc. etc.

Problem is, as others have noted to me, there aren't a ton of potential "feel-good" attractions. It's a pretty dark universe and there's nothing particularly cute and cuddly to appeal to the little ones.

What about making Hobbiton a whole seperate place for 'younger' ones. Maybe have Bilbo's Party tent where the kids could play games. Also, a petting zoo for the kids, maybe even replicas of the hobbits houses; similar to Mickey and Minnies house in Toontown.:shrug::D

Hey, I'd be all for it, but that's the argument I've heard against the idea.

Big LOTR fan myself, but Disney's body of work is far too separate from Tolkein's to really ever mesh. I get the feeling that anything added to the parks would kind of stick out like a sore thumb. Maybe you could do something at DHS, but even then its a bit of a stretch trying to put the old fantasy world into old Hollywood. If its true Tolkein never wanted his work associated with Disney, I can understand why.

Yeah, I just read the article. Kind of crazy considering Tolkien and Disney were both visionaries, but I guess Tolkien had his point of view. I love both of them, too bad they couldn't have worked together.

Disney dropping the Narnia franchise left me pretty disappointed. I would have loved to see it somewhere in Fantasyland. I love the fairytale thing they're conjuring up there, but I think another classic like that would be a good response to Harry Potter. But hey, maybe not.
