Typhoon Lagoon Wave pool dangerous!

That floor does suck and it kinda forces you to go in the deeper ends only to be swept back into the shallow end and either A.) scrape your butt/knees on the rough floor or B.) collide with the only 500 pound person nearest to you preferably in an inappropriate area...

X-I I've had the unfortune experiences of both A and B :(

When my son was 6 we went took him to Typhoon Lagoon for the first time. The water park was pretty empty. Max ran in and slipped(so much for the gritty floor) and within seconds his back was covered in blood. He scraped a pretty big area, but one spot was cut really deep and almost 5 years later he still has quite a scar. The CM's were fantastic, immediately brought him to first aid and worked to keep him comfortable and calm him down. I can understand why the floor is rough, but this is the roughest flooring in a wave pool I have ever been in. We've been to wave pools in Hersey Park, Six Flags, Great Wolf Lodge, Breakwater Beach(Jersey Shore) and all handle thousands of guests, but none are quite so rough as Typhoon Lagoon.

Disney's wave pools are the only ones I've been to that have those horrible floors. I hate them, and personally find that way more dangerous than just having smooth floors. If you slip on a smooth floor - no big deal. If you slip on those rough floors, you come back up without any skin.

I find the gritty floor unnecessary to get to the waves. If you're not a strong enough swimmer to swim out there without touching the floor, then you're not a strong enough swimmer to be playing out in the waves anyway.

I wish they could find another solution.

I will say that the floors at WDW wave pools are on the rough side. Rougher that others I have been in.

I would not go so far as to call them dangerous or unsafe though. Pretty much any concrete / shotcrete / gunnite surface is going to abrade you if you slide against it. The ones and TL and BB just rip you up a little more than most.

As for the person who was afraid of getting sucked into the wave generator. I spent many a summer day at Action Park - sorry to add to your fears. :)

The Tidal Wave Pool: The first patron death occurred here in 1982; another visitor would drown in this common water-park attraction five years later. It was, however, the number of people the lifeguards saved from a similar fate that made this the only Waterworld attraction to gain its own nickname, "The Grave Pool."[13] It was 100 feet (30 m) wide by 250 feet (76 m) long and could hold 500 to 1,000 people. Waves were generated for 20 minutes at a time with 10-minute intervals between them, and could reach as much as 40 inches (102 cm) in height.[13] It was not always obvious that pool depth increased as one got closer to the far end, and there were patrons who only remembered or realized that they couldn't swim when they were in over their heads and the waves were going full blast. Even those who could swim well didn't realize that the waves, as fresh water, were not as buoyant as their ocean counterparts, and they sometimes exhausted themselves doing more swimming than they were ready for. Crowding at the side ladders developed as the waves began, leading to many accidents.[13] Twelve lifeguards were on duty at all times, and on high-traffic weekends they were known to rescue as many as 30 people, compared to the one or two the average lifeguard might make in a typical season at a pool or lake.[13]

As other have said, they can't change the bottom of the pool. It has to be rough to give people any traction at all.

To demonstrate, go into your bathroom (if it has a tile floor). Pour a thin layer of water on the floor to cover it. Then try and walk back and forth quickly. You'll fall. Now imagine that smooth floor as a slope going down into the wave pool. It's as simple as that.

There is other options and less rough ground they can use. Other water parks have similar wavepools and they dont have surfaces as rough as that. There IS other options.

My wife and I found out the hard way how much power that water has in the shallow end. A little public safety announcement for everyone: don't sit down in the shallow end and just expect the water to hit you without any problems...we tumbled problably 10 feet back and my wife got a big scrape on her elbow. Its been a year and half and you can still see the scar, im sure it will never go away. With that being said though, i don't think they really need to change the surface. Im sure its usually peoples own fault when they get hurt and if you aren't able to stablize yourself and brace for a wave then you problably shouldn't be in a the pool anyway.

The bottom of the pool is pretty brutal. Just get you some water shoes and stay in the 4 feet + and dont land on your knees. Land on OTHER GUESTS!

most wave pools ive been into have gritty bottom, i think its because if the where to use a tile, painted or smooth concret surface it would be more slippery and way more accidents wouls happen. when might have happened is they made the bottom textured and didnt file the sharp spots. I think that when they refab they should look into a way of filing done the sharp spots or doing like a typr or spry to cover it like what people use in the beds of trucks.
