Typhoon Lagoon Wave pool dangerous!

Everytime i go to typoon lagoon there is an accident in the wave pool. The main problem is the gritty floor. My mu got knocked over last year (Youd be surprised how shallow she was as well)and scared her should and all her back, and were talking deep cuts. I have had some smaller accidents cutting myself on the floor. I personally think that its dangerous and they should change the floor because it puts people off going in.

Its especially dangerous for children.

Anyone else had bad experiences with it?

I agree it can be dangerous, but it is a wave pool in you are going to run into other people in fall sometimes and possible hit the floor  I think you have to have good balance and be in fairly good health. Same with some of the other rides. I love that wave pool :ROFLOL:

When it comes to a pool like this they have a choice of a few people getting scraped up on a rough bottom or a bunch of people getting hurt from slipping and falling.

This is an observation I have made.

In a wave pool the shallow end is a much more hazardous area. Why do I say this? Well first, you are the last in the crunch of people being swept away. This makes it to were "more" things hit you. Secondly that wave energy has to go somewhere, and when that wave starts in the deep end, it is still a huge wave. So as the area gets shallower that wave gets more intense.

Does this help?

P.S. that is why being in the deep area, closest to the wave maker is the safer area to be.

You have probably noticed how hard it is to stay in place when a wave comes. Well, imagine trying to stay in place or progress forward if the floor was smooth. You would never make it anyway. It's a trade off they needed to make.

I love the intensity of the waves. I think the rough floor is a necessary precaution. As an above poster stated: a few scrapes is better than a few broken necks because they chose a smooth and slippery floor.

Side note: I'm scared to get to close to the wave maker. I have an irrational fear of getting sucked in.

I will echo ddrongowski, The area by the deep end is just gently rolling waves and the shallow end is where the wave brakes and has all of the power.

FBP, I'm pretty sure they have something in place so you won't get "Sucked in".

Speaking of that...Pumba, I'm not gonna touch that comment. :zipit:

That wave pool is my favorite thing in Typhoon Lagoon. One time my family was there, my brother and I didn't do anything BUT swim in that pool. That said, it does hurt if you fall, but like others stated, it's nessassary.

Yeah, I realize that I can't actually get sucked in. Still though, it weirds me out. I like to stay about a third of the way into the pool where the waves are the most intense.

We enjoy the wave pool. However, I was the victim of a major scrape, thanks to a panic striken grandma. I think the key to the pool is to try to distance yourself from other people. The last time we were there we saw a guy just about lose his swim trunks due to his kids grabbing hold in a panic at the last minute. They were in the shallow end of the pool, maybe about 1 1/2 -2 feet deep at the most.

As other have said, they can't change the bottom of the pool. It has to be rough to give people any traction at all.

To demonstrate, go into your bathroom (if it has a tile floor). Pour a thin layer of water on the floor to cover it. Then try and walk back and forth quickly. You'll fall. Now imagine that smooth floor as a slope going down into the wave pool. It's as simple as that.

That is why as dorky as they look we always opt for the swim shoes for the wave pool. Feet don't hurt and there is a bit better traction.

There are surely other options than the rough floor currently in place?

The area right by the rope where the waves first form is the calmest place in the entire wave pool. As long as you can tread water comfortably (it's about 7 ft deep) it's the best place to be. Very few people goes out that far, so you don't have to worry about people crashing into you, plus the wave just gently raises you up, instead of rolling you about.

If you want to talk about a dangerous attraction, my vote is for Humunga Kowabunga. I scrapped my back there in 1994 and still have a scar. I guess the seams in the slide cut into my skin, and I haven't been on it since.
