Does the MK hub need more trees (again)?

At first, I thought nothing of it, but after remembering past trips to the MK and seeing pictures of the hub before 2005(ish). Shouldn't some trees be brought back to not only give shade in such a barren area, but to once again make the castle appear taller and farther away? I know some say they had fireworks viewing problems with the trees, but was it that big of a problem for the 20+ years the trees existed?

Notice how much larger the castle looks without the trees? That might possibly be one reason for it.

Well, the trees were originally removed for 2 reasons. One due to Wishes, espically since Wishes features lower level pyro which none of the previous show versions of Fantasy in the Sky had. It also allowed greater viewing for "Cinderellabration" which the TDO execs really thought would be MUCH bigger and better than it turned out to be. Now with the popularity of Wishes, Hallowishes, Holiday Wishes, (and the now defunct Magic Music and Mayhem, which would have had terrible sight problems if the trees were in place), and Dream along with Mickey, I doubt the trees will ever return. The popularity of Move It! Shake It! Celebrate It! also plays would prevent these trees, as well as the show stops for the Celebrate a Dream come true Parade.

It's all about the Entertainment!

I personally think the whole park needs more trees. When compared to some of the Magic Kingdoms elsewhere (namely California) WDW's kingdom looks like a slab of concrete in 2/3 of the park. Although I will say that the trees in that picture might be a bit too big. I'd vote for more foliage over less though.

Like Chape stated they were removed because they were blocking the views of the castle and the fireworks. IMHO removing them was the correct choice. The sight lines are better without them.

I personally like the non-tree version better. You can actually see the castle in its full glory, and you can see Wishes and the stage shows from halfway down Main Street.

Those trees were nice when they were planted, but I'm not a fan of how big they were in your first picture. You never want to block line of sight to the theme park icons.

The trees were removed primarily because of the low level pyro and projection effects of Wishes. In fact, not only were trees removed, but the entire Hub was rebuilt to make it more open and guest friendly.

The MK does, along with many parts of WDW, suffer from a lack of foliage these days. That being said, I understand why the trees in The Hub were removed, though I think they went a bit too far as the area is now is a circle of concrete basically devoid of greenery. I say put some manicured trees in and cut them back so that they remain a consistent size. This is already being done for Main Street and many parts of Epcot; I see no reason why this can't be done for The Hub.

i think that mk could do with getting some more trees planted throughout the park (hopefully this will be encorporated in the fl expansion)...however, i prefer the picture of main street usa without the trees...the castle looks much more prominant, as well as it allowing for better viewings of the firework displays etc...

Though I am usually for greenery and for a lush environment, I'm against it here.

The trees were in the way of the castle, and honestly, took away from the scope of it. When you look down MSUSA, I want to see THE CASTLE, not the trees in front of it. Same for Wishes....I'm very happy that it's easier to see now.

I don't know why everyone thinks that the Hub is barren, now....It's not. I found it in Aug. to be very manicured, and actually lush in the areas/planters that they have.

Could there be more? Yes, but don't intrude on the Castle.

I completely agree.

You can see Space Mountain from Fantasyland, it kinda takes away from the whole "transported to a world of fantasy". There's more of these, just don't feel like thinking of them.

The lack of trees is sickening.

Everytime someone justifies how they've slaughtered so many to 'improve views' i want to scream. People wake up, it's a PARK. And one in Central Florida where shade is valued!

To see how barren and concrete-filled MK has become is just sad. And for what? So you can see some lousy small-scale projections on the castle IF you happen to be right in the Hub?

All I can hear is Walt talking about DL in the 50th Anniversary film about how the park will look more beautiful every year because ''even the trees will grow'' ... compared to DL, DLP and, even the almost new, HKDL, MK has become quite lacking in trees.

First, they cut them down in Town Square and replaced the mature trees with strip center seedlings and wood chips from Home Depot. Then, came the Hub and Hub Waterways. And finally we've had Fantasyland lose some mature trees and planters (not to mention around the now gone 20K lagoon).

Fireworks are largely in the sky. And a few projections on the castle and a few pyro shots from it are NOT in any way, shape or form justification for what has been done.

Just more Walmarting WDW!

You haven't seen TDL's and there MASSIVE walkways.... you could fit thousands of people in their hub courtyard thing.... THOUSANDS.

I liked the trees, and miss them greatly. The hub area has a completely different feel to it now vs. when the trees were there. Plus, when they removed the trees they also removed the concrete benches that were around them, one of which is where my husband proposed...so I had a sentimental attachment to that area. I used to love being able to sit on the benches in the shade and look at the castle. The first time I went to the MK after their removal I was in complete shock (I was not a frequent visitor to forums back then, so I had no idea they had removed them). It was a drastic change for the worse, in my opinion.

Can't say I agree. Missed FitS in 2001, for the most part, because of those trees on the left side of the Hub. Stood there in Aug, perfect view of the show.

Just a example where Show trumping Efficiency is a pay off for one event, and a let down for another...which depends on your perspective anyway.

Why does everything TDO does have to fit into your "Wlamarting" conspiracy? I'll give you the fact that quite a bit of what they do falls into the efficiency/profit over show category but the removal of the trees in the hub is not one of them. The trees in the hub blocked quite a few sight lines to the castle and the removal of them improved the show. I know that I want to see the fireworks and the castle, not just the fireworks and the trees blocked that view from many places in the hub. Removing the trees allowed quite a few more guests to do the same. Would ROE be the same if you had to look through tree to see the globe?

Agreed and when you take a picture on mainstreet you can actually now see the whole castle.
