What is this space in Animal Kingdom?

I was poking around on Live Local and Google Earth earlier and came across this large open space in Animal Kingdom. It's located between the Maharajah Jungle Trek and Conservation Station. This link [http://www.bing.com/maps/#JnE9eXAuQ...uMzU0MTE4NjA1MjkwNSU3ZS04MS41OTExNjIxODczMDAz - select the Bird's Eye view - you may have to re-center a bit, the area is between Conservation Way and East Savannah] shows a large open space with what looks like storage equipment.

I searched through the forums a bit but didn't see a reference to this, so apologies in advance if it's already been discussed. Would appreciate it if someone could point me to that thread if it exists.

Thanks!

I'm not quite sure based on the link the exact location, but there are several areas for expansion in that park. The pad you're seeing is either the area for a larger Kali/Tiger River Rapids ride or it's an area between the Africa/Asian path and Conservation Station. There really hasn't been much in the form of definitive rumors for that section other than a walking path to Conservation Station that may be (or lead to) a new landing spot for Festival of the Lion King.

I don't know if you are referring to that big piece of land towards the back of the park or the current location of Yak & Yeti

That area (can be seen from EE) and the area behind Camp Minnie and Mickey have been cleared since opening and many a rumor has been floating around for the last 10+ years regarding these open plots of land.

Both of the large cleared areas have been cleared since the initial construction of the park back in the mid to late 90's. The one to the south west was to be beastly kingdom and a portion of the one to the north east was to accommodate a much larger Kali attraction.

That certainly looks like the plot for Yak & Yeti. I'm guessing that's what all the construction is for in that picture. The empty space near it has been cleared for years.

Yep, they also used the northeast plot for staging during the construction of EE and Asia. It would've been used for the Tiger River Run attraction that later became Kali.

Basically, both areas mentioned by Richard are large plots of the land that have been sitting unused since the mid/late 90's.

Just a note, Google maps, much easier to view, decipher and use IMO.

Anyways, that appears to be just a vacant piece of land north of the Jungle Trek where they have the tigers. It is clearly a backstage area as the water tanks for Kali are just south of there.

I think Master Yoda is right when he said it was planned for a use but now sits empty.

No, if you scroll down that link you can see the Yak & Yeti building.

Thanks everyone for the answers! I knew you'd be the right people to ask. It seems like it is indeed an area set aside for further expansion.

In addition to a longer version of Kali River Rapids, there was meant to be a skyway type attraction that would be Asian version of the Safari. I believe it's in the queue for either Kali or Everest where they have a list of some of the animals that were to have been in this ride included Musk Ox and Snow Leopards. It would have also finished with a Yeti/Abominable Snow man. I don't remember where I read all of this, but I'm sure someone else can elaborate on what this could have been.

I looked at the backside of EE for the first time and that just makes it look unfinished. That ruined the magic.

Then make sure you never take the 'keys to the kingdom' otherwise known as 'kill the magic' tour. You get to see the backside of alot of things including splash, Main St., pirates, utilidors, etc. That would really do it for you.
