Year of a Million Birthdays?

:shrug:Is that what this year's celebration is? I only ask because all we've heard about so far is to do with the birthday side of things. Have we heard if we're looking at any type of celebrations?

Birthdays seem to be the main focus simply because it is a celebration that every man woman and child has. I am sure that if they included a similar free gift style promotion around wedding anniversaries, bar mitzvahs, etc some ambulance chaser would cry discrimination.

I know what you mean. What I mean is they are saying in advertising, 'what will you celebrate?', when maybe it should be 'celebrate your birthday at...'?

I am assuming that they want the promotion to encompass any kind of celebration but to be unbiased the free stuff has to include everyone. Much like the year of a Million Dreams did with their winner selections. Criteria always consisted of a location (ie guest in row 4 seat 3 on pod 2 at Star Tours at 10:00AM) and not a description of a person or group. (ie first family of four leaving POTC)

It is everything and anything you can celebrate - first 4.0, first hair cut, first bday, 40th bday, 40th Anniversary, wedding, honeymoon, engagement, first time you are staying on the resort property - anything you can think of! This trip in June we are celebrating my DH's bday, as well as, the fact we are celebrating our 5th Anniversary in 2009 and we honeymooned at the GF! So lots to celebrate! And in November, my mom and I are hoping to go together and we will be celebrating her bday while we are there, mine which is in Oct, and the fact that mom has never stayed on Disney property! :sohappy:

I think as far as what they are advertising - birthdays are the only thing you can go & celebrate where you will get something for it. I mean - if I bring my marriage certificate on my anniversary & say I'm celebrating, I'm going to get a big high five but no free admission. :)

That being said - Disney has always been known for making magic for those celebrating anything. If they know about it, they do little things from free desserts, special character phone calls, and more. Those extras are just being vocalized more w/this years theme because it will bring people in.

We will be celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary when we go, but I'm not expecting anything. I think you only get in free or get something when it's your birthday.

Yes and no. For the family that would win the Catsle Suite, a computer would spit out a random location in one of the parks and the dream team would head out. There was very specific criteria for the basis of the family that could stay...one of them being "photogenic" and the other was they be a stereotypical "nuclear" family. You weren't going to get ma and pa kettle up there. But also, I saw them randomly approach people in the midway, so there definitely was a bit biased selection.

I believe you are quite mistaken about that. I personally met several of the suite winners and all told the exact same story.....They were selected by sitting in a particular seat. One was in DTD another in Star Tours and yet another was at POTC if I remember correctly. Also none of were a typical family. In fact none of the groups I met even had any kids with them. We have confirmed instances of gay couples, single people as well as a group of frat guys wining the suite. Hardly the typical family of four. I also know a dream team member and they told me that there was never anything on the selection criteria that had anything to do with a persons race, gender, appearance or family status. Selection was all based on location at a particular time.

Yeah, I imagine that this is much more realistic than the post above.

There is no way that Disney could purposely profile people for the Dreams Giveaway, especially for the Dream Suite stays. For one, it is not legal according to laws governing such contests, but beyond that, they would suffer an incredible blow if it were true that they were profiling people to stay there!

Well, that came out of the manager's mouth. I'm more likely to believe him than anyone else. And I'm not sure what you mean by laws governing such contests. Many of the prizes awarded wher handed to people randomly...I saw quite a few instances personally.
