Cant stay onsite w/family :( Decent off-site?

My family(wife & 3 kids(16, 12, 10)) will be going to DisneyWorld in about 2 weeks. Due to a schedule change, I will be able join them after all. The problem is that they have a standard room reserved at one of the all-star resorts. I called the resort just to make sure and was told that the max occupancy was four... no exceptions. :(
Well, I tried to get another room at the same resort or any of the other Value resorts and they're all booked. My only choice now is to stay off-site.
Given what I've read about off-site shuttles, I'm afraid I'll have to either rent a car or take a taxi each day to meet my family at their resort. Because of this added cost, I'm trying to find a lower-priced hotel.
I've read reviews on tripadvisor and am getting frustrated. Review after review lists bugs, mildew and uncleanliness as complaints at just about any sub-$80 hotel.
Any suggestions?
Thanks...

try calling disney everyday to see if there are any changes. youd be surprised. but the offsite thing, if you end up doing it i would suggest renting a car because they are more reliable then the shuttles(at least thats what i heard, i have never stayed off property)

If you get no satisfaction with Disney and have to stay off site then definately rent a car. Although this adds to your overall costs it means that you go to the parks when YOU want to go and also you return when YOU'VE had enough. You do not want to go to (or return from) the parks when the hotels shuttle says so

What about Port Orleans resort? Can you have 5 to a room there? Would you be able to change the room reservation to a different resort?

That is a good idea, since POR sleeps 5 to a room. It is a beautiful resort. You should really consider this. I'm sure it is not fully booked, the resort is huge!

Have you given any thought to a condo or home off site? We love staying on property but find it much more convenient with our kids (now 18 and 13) to stay in a condo or pool home. Kids and DH and I get our own rooms/bathrooms and it's lovely having a kitchen. I don't cook on vacation, of course, but reheat or pop popcorn is wonderful.

We have a wonderful agent (PM me if you want his number) who gives us great rates and is approx. 10 minutes from the park. We actually get back "home" at night in less time than if we took a bus back to a resort . Even renting a car and the price of the condo/house, it's still about the same price as a value but we find it suits our needs better, especially with the kids.

Good luck!

The wife and I just stayed at the Super 8 Motel Maingate ( 407-396-8883 )about 3 weeks back and it was very nice. It's at MM #9 on Rt 192, only a mile or two from the main entrance to Disney. The furniture is all new and the rooms have a fridge, microwave, coffee maker and a much nicer TV than I have in my own living room! The building and surrounding areas are clean, landscaped nicely and well lit. About the only "downside" is that the pool was a little small. But the price was great. If you book with a AAA discount the rooms were only $41.00 a night during the week ( this was May 17-25, still off season ) but they do charge more for weekends. And there is a Publix market right next door in easy walking distance. I have been traveling to Disney on a tight budget for over 20 years now ( well, it's either go once a year on a tight budget or go every three or four years with lots of cash, I'll take the once a year deal myself ) and I will say this is the nicest low-buck hotel I have stayed in.

This is exactly what I was thinking too because that is what we are doing on our next trip. There are five of us too. Check into it and see what they say.

Just a note. We stayed at an off site hotel that was really just like being on site with out the magic, at Royal Plaza close to Down Town Disney last year. That hotel was very nice. We had a huge room with two queen beds and a sleeper sofa for two. The only bad thing was that because my husband had meetings there and could not drive to the parks with us, he was forced to use their bus one day, and that's all it took to never try that again. It took him well over an hour to get to Epcot to meet us. They go to every park in one run and Epcot was the last one they went to. They also pick up for all of the hotels in that area so it's very slow.

What ever you decide, have a Magical trip!!

There is a Country Inn and Suites at the Maingate and we are staying there 1 night before we move to AKL. We have found these are very nice and clean and not overly expensive. Also All Star Vacation Homes give you tons of bang for your buck. Very very nice. We stayed there last year for 3 days and loved it.

I know 2 people who have stayed there in the last few years and they had no complaints. Give it a shot.
