I'm still wishing for an updated Superstar Television, with Grey's, Desperate, Lost, etc. Guest interaction is all the rage now, it seems like a perfect time to bring it back.

Does High School Musical really have the staying power to warrant a show inside a theater? I know they just made a second movie for it, but I have 2 kids (DS8 and DD5) and none of us get the popularity of this show. My kids have no interest in it and I neither do any of their friends. (Perhaps we're all out of the loop...) I guess I just see it as a flash-in-the-pan kind of show. Am I wrong? :veryconfu

Actually yes. The show (and franchise) has made such a major impact on Disney over the last year and a half that they are considering every possibility imaginable when trying to squeeze more money out of it. Anyone remember the seperate-ticketed show that was rumored for MGM Studios? :animwink: (It is still an option in Disney's book at this point...)

You're right. Why would a permanent show at ABCTheatre show a High school Musical pep rally? Just because some teens can sing and dance in a Disney Channel original movie doesn't make them popular enough to warrant the distinct honor of having a permanent place in a Disney park, especially when the Pep Rally doesn't even make sense. What is it's purpose? To advertise and sell CDs? Regular shows and rides stay put and entertain while actually having a plot line to follow that entertains. However, the Pep rally has no plot line. It just screams out music while 18 year old girls dance to the music all the way to the hat. It's like the Pep rally is a parade having only one float about a movie that was overated and made Disney feel like this movie was more important than any other Disney film and set up a parade for THIS movie, not any other one, because of the above reason that some Execs might've believed. Now, I'm not bashing parades, because they show that Disney cares about multiple things, not just one overated film from Disney Channel.

That was my two cents.
I hope that I don't have to rant like that again.

While I personally can't stand any aspect of the show(s), it is a more than popular franchise and Disney is willing to do whatever it takes to sell. If they were to make HSM into a stage show, it would be a longer, more composed show. Think on the scale of Festival of the Lion King, minus the elaborate sets...

True. I was comparing the fact about the Pep Rally and whether the way it is would really work on stage. But a composed version would be better since it won't just be a parade with one float, etc.

unfortunately for you, you are not the target audience of High School Musical. It's an extremely popular franchise and certainly has a place at MGM...moreso than Tomorrowland, that's for sure.

That's the thing. It's a popular franchise but dosen't deserve to be in a place where real movies go to to be turned into rides. It's like putting the character filled wand on SSE. It's fun, it's about disney, but it's not about the theme. Disney Channel original movies have no place in a place that is centered around major release movies(Theaters).

High School musical is huge! There are 3 different version on dvd, reg, dance along, singalong. The tour sold out everywhere it went. The tour is now on dvd! My daughter is having a HSM 2 party with all her friends. Don't under estimate the buying power of young girls. Besides I thought the movie was pretty good, catchy songs and great message. A Disneyfied Grease.

Actually Disney Has Done this. They rewrote parts, added I think 2 more songs. and turned it into a full length stage musicals that is available for schools and community theaters to do. My High school put it on, and it wasn't that bad, it went more in depth with the characters and made them more like real people and not just high school kids dancing and having problems.

Says you. The Walt Disney Co. disagrees (not that they are always right).

I, personally, don't like High School Musical. I watched it on TV, laughed through the entire thing, thought it was a modern remake of Grease for teens, and that Disney is shoving it down our throats. I think the story is unoriginal and it's corny. Little kids might like it, so good for them, but I don't think the sequel is going to be as good, and it won't make a lot of money. I watched a music video of one of the songs, and it's basically exactly the same as the first movie.

When we went to the Maryland Theatre Festival (in little old boring Maryland) there were so many schools that were doing High School Musical as their Musical for the school year, that they had to learn different montages of songs so that they could actually compete. One High School performed the entire thing, and it was just... poorly done. A friend of mine did High School Musical in Indiana and he was the lead, and I was proud of him, but I flat out told him I hated the show.

Lastly, the show is said to be going to Broadway, and I really don't think parents are going to pay 50-100 dollars to take their kids and their friends to go see a show like that. It's just... out of place... Avenue Q (which I hate, by the way) could at least get an audience because of it's subject matter. High School Musical takes itself too seriously. People would see it and think it's stupid. It's like Cheetah Girls becoming a musical. It's good for young kids to sing and enjoy, but it's stupid to assume it would make enough money to be a musical.

if Disney could manage to get butts in the seats for Tarzan, HSM on Broadway would do fine. It would require some sort of adaptation, but done the right way, it could come across very Hairspray-like, which does quite well for itself.
