Trading my vehicle

I plan to drive 2 1/2 hours tommorrow to trade my car for that mini-van that I have been looking for for the past several months. However, I just remembered last night that when I traded in another vehicle about 9 years ago, I had to give him some white registration card for my trade in. Problem is, I don't have that. I must have thrown it away. Someone told me that I have to have that to switch my license plates over. So, can I do without it and just get all new plates? Is it something important enough to break the deal? I plan on going over there tommorrow and, of course, the DMV is closed on Mondays, and I can't just go over there any old time, as it's 2 1/2 hours away. So I hope it's no big deal. :lookaroun

Hmm...that definitely will be a problem if the DMV is closed. They need your registration in order to switch plates...and if you JUST get new plates, they won't be able to give you new plates and a new registration because the DMV is closed. You're not driving away with the vehicle without a registered vehicle and an insurance binder for the vehicle. (You can't get the binder without the registration).

Better call the dealer first before you go - it may vary from state to state, but I know that here you habve to have your registration with you (don't you have to keep it in the glove box?)

Well, I made the deal today and drove 'er home...without the registration. I don't know if it's because I live in a different state and therefore, have to re-do the registration anyway, or if it doesn't make a difference one way or another, or if we just did it wrong altogether. But however it happened, I drove the vehicle home, so tommorrow I will go to the DMV to file the forms I need to file. And, hopefully, if we did it wrong, I won't get pulled over in the meantime.:lookaroun

I think I got a heckuva deal, as well, I must say. 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan SE with DVD Player and full stow and go for just over $14,800 plus $3,000 dollars for my car. So, out the door price was just over $12,600 dollars. Not bad for a vehicle with only 285 miles. Only thing it's missing is power doors and windows. :sohappy:

Sounds like a great deal! Congratulations!

Must be a state thing because in MA you can't get an insurance binder without the VIN#, valid registration, and an insurance policy with the pre-requisite needed for the deal (leasing a car needs a better insurance policy than a financed vehicle). They won't let you drive an uninsured vehicle...so...you can't drive her home.

Good luck with her anyways!

You're better off without the power doors anyway. We have the same vehicle and the doors have broken on two separate occasions. They are impossible for kids to open when the motor breaks. Luckily it was still covered under warranty.

Hope you enjoy the van. If it's any encouragement, we have 2001 Grand Caravan that we've put 65,000 miles on since new. We've only had to put about $200 in repairs into it in five years, beyond regular maintenance, and my wife is TOUGH on the car. It's not the most exciting thing to drive, but its been very good to us.

Come to think of it, we originally bought it to drive to WDW the week after 9/11, but decided to fly anyway.

Ya, turns out I'm not legal after all. The dealer was either unaware, or forgot, that in Illinois, we can't just slap the old plates onto the new vehicle. He thought that you could do that for thirty days until the registration and everything was complete. Well, maybe in Indiana, but not in Illinois. I talked to the guy at the DMV today and he said I should have received temporary plates, but I didn't. So we called the guy and he's supposed to have sent them out by DHL today so they will arrive tommorrow. So, since the wife is off Wednesdays, I'll just take her car to work and leave the van parked. Good thing I didn't get stopped today. :lookaroun

Ya, good thing that this one has almost the entire warranty period left on it, because I tried to play some cassettes last night and it spit every one of them out. So I'm gonna have to take it in and get that fixed under warranty.

Besides that, and the goof that I just mentioned from the dealership on the plates, I'm pretty pleased so far.

WHOA!!! That's not something a dealership shouldn't "not know" about!

If you had been pulled over they would've towed the van.
