I left a couple cups once. Normally I just keep using them, but I was going home for Christmas and it felt like a waste.

I was one of many on a college trip to Italy that attempted to liberate towels on which the hotel foolishly had embroidered ROMA in large letters. I guess they were clever enough to check each room for missing towels and blocked us from leaving until they were returned. I know, it was dishonest and I semi-regret it since I was a wild and crazy guy, however it was very much their fault for creating such an enormous temptation. Nothing came of it, all were unliberated and we were allowed to leave with no charges. They never left the building so we hadn't broken any law yet. We couldn't help it if about a dozen towels accidentally fell into our suitcases as we packed to leave. An amazing coincidence for sure, but sometimes weird things happen. That said, what a perfect souvenir they would have accidentally made.
Just to clarify, they were all from different rooms, so really interesting how we all came up with the same evil idea. I hope my children appreciate how I straightened out and became a model citizen.

Just wait til something happens and then they will change their tune. Then they will blame Disney for a guest being harmed and not having some kind of protocol in place that monitors and restricts items being left by discharging guests in the hallways.

As time goes on and more people show us how evil and untrustworthy they are we get more wary of others. I've always been the one to give everyone the benefit of a doubt and be trusting until they give me a reason not to kind of guy ... but now you have to always be on your guard. Evil can show up at any time without warning.

It's possible to trust younger people that do get a little rambunctious and lacking in good judgement but grow up to be pretty hard working and honest. Youth allows one to get away with things.
It is the elderly power mad that are dangerous. As we all age all of us get a little crazy, want to be important and remembered and don't care if they are remembered for being nasty or good. Whatever, helps them achieve their goal will be what they do. I am a member of the elderly group and I stopped even trying to figure out who is honest and who isn't. We all have a streak of either one and we all know we are running out of time to create our image.
If you want to feel disillusioned think about being part of the Woodstock, flower and love generation and knowing it is that same generation that is the exact opposite now. Very depressing! We all thought that we had helped to achieve so many good things only to grow old and see the same generation being so self absorbed and heartless.

I once witnessed someone eat chocolate covered strawberries off of a room service tray that was put back out in the hall for pick up.

Okay, I think we've gotten enough feedback. As expected, almost everyone who answered the poll wouldn't take anything. I personally wouldn't either. Who knows where these things have been? Yet, these offers are still made on various groups and forums. I hate to say it but Disney probably has no choice but to collect it all and dispose of it. They probably can't even offer it to various non-profits for the same reason we wouldn't take it and its probably prohibited by law also.

I have never seen stuff left outside a room, but many times I have offered my extras to strangers when checking out.
About 60% of the time, the first person I ask is happy to have the food/drinks, usually drinks.
If the first person doesn't want it, then someone nearby overhears me, and offers/asks to have it. Only once or twice have I had to ask 3 people, and that only happens at the airport.
I am always happily surprised, but most people are very appreciative to be offered a sealed bottle of water or soda at WDW and Universal. The people who work at the car rental return reliably welcome leftover beverages. I've also had success at gas stations! The one place that is slightly harder to give away drinks is in the airport. People who turn me down usually tell me they are also about to go through security, but even there, people are thirsty, and I can usually give them away in 3 tries or less.
For cans of sunscreen, the WDW pool staff will happily accept it.

You're just doing the verbal equivalent of people making the same offer on Facebook or wherever. The difference is they don't have anyone else immediately available so they leave it outside their room. They then take photo(s) and offer their stuff. My photos were recent offerings on an AKL FB group (not mine). Speaking for myself, I just wouldn't immediately take stuff from outside a random person's room. It feels like dumpster diving. No thanks.

One time, a long time ago, the value resorts didn't have coffee makers, so I bought a $10 Mr. Coffee to use at Pop. It had a glass carafe, so I decided to offer it to the hotel staff instead of trying to bring it home. I walked over to the Mousekeeper's break room, and they happily accepted it.
As it happens, I just gave away some leftover water earlier this summer. I offered it to a family with a stroller and the dad enthusiastically said, "Thanks! I will ALWAYS say yes to free drinks, especially at WDW!" Mind, the water I gave him was a small multi-pack that was still shrink wrapped. In his shoes, I would have taken it too.
The last time I accidentally left something behind in a hotel room (2024), it was a cold pack I'd left in the fridge for about 20minutes at check out. The staff said they'd check for it, but I never heard back from anyone.
