Elio (Pixar - June 2025)

I've watched all the trailers but I just can't get excited about. I feel apathetic towards it.

Same here. I usually have a good read on these. I don’t think it’s going to do great. Not saying it’s going to bomb but I don’t think it’s going to do great. Also is this the right movie on the heels of Stitch? Seems like bad timing.

I disagree if the movie gets strong reviews, especially since they had a specific go to the movies type trailer for Elio playing in front of Lilo & Stitch this past weekend.

Eh I dunno. I wrote that post above without even considering that my 9 year old son seems to have no interest in this movie. Even though he seen a few previews at the movie theatres. Not to mention his cousin is named Elio. Not to say we won’t see it as we usually go to the movies about 2-3 times from early summer mid August. Just not sensing a buzz or much interest. If it’s going to do well it’ll probably need really strong reviews and word of mouth.

Which is why what gives me hope that will happen is Domee Shi, given her work on Bao and Turning Red, and because it seems like they have found a way for Adrian Molina’s work to be kept in there while finding a way to make it better.

Sounds like a “you” problem, bud
I know you're really promoting this film big time and want to see it do well, but this isn't just a particular poster having this opinion.

Originals right now, especially in animation, on average aren't doing well. There are exceptions of course, like Wild Robot, but those are few and far between. I think its easy to see why some aren't interested in Elio. And specifically for the poster you are responding to, he is on record many times saying he doesn't like this particular animation style, and that isn't unique. I've heard that from many other people outside of this site. Its a valid opinion even if we may not agree with it. As there are animation styles I don't like either, like the hybrid animation that has shown up recently, for example Puss in Boots 2.

I hope Elio does well though, as I want all Disney films to do well.

Elemental also did well enough by way of breaking even at the box office to prevent Disney from stopping anymore original films from being made at Pixar.

It remains to be seen if that is true or not. With only Hoppers on the slate which was likely already in production I don't see that as some return to originals by Disney.

Since 2021 Pixar has released 1 original and gave 3 others a theatrical re-release in 2024 (Elemental, Soul, Turning Red, Luca). Their combined box office was $691.2M. Yes they got the D+ treatment so that cut down a bit of any earnings potential.

Inside Out 2 earned $1.699B

Walt Disney Animation Studios has released 4 originals in that same timeframe (Raya, Encanto, Strange World, Wish). Those films grossed $720.3M combined.

Moana 2 $1.059B

Sequels do a lot of work to help fund the originals, but you need more people turning out for them to justify making them.

I will say it’s good that Disney keeps trying at making originals, even in the last year or so they’ve made more original animated films than they ever did under Walt.

Admit it. You want to see it.

It’s so insanely banel an idea for a movie, one almost DOES want to see it.
Yes, maybe I do need to see this plushie cat dollhouse movie just to experience what an utter train wreck of vapidness was it will be!
And I thought ‘Cocomelon’ was brain rot for children..
Lankybox - The Movie will be the upcoming sequel maybe…?
😆

Who knows, maybe it will become the next cult classic.
Weird or nonsensical films have that happen sometimes…

Add me to the list of folks not really sensing a need or an interest to see ‘Elio’.
I’ve seen the full trailer twice now in theatres over the last few days and the best part was hearing the Queen song ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ playing over the theatre loudspeakers.

Have no interest whatsoever in this.
Seems just a jumble of random characters tossed together under a loose ‘space extraterrestrial’ theme.

But then again…
Pixar has often released trailers that do not really reflect what the movie ends up really feeling like.
But a trailers job is to spark interest in the film, and get potential audience members excited and wanting to see it.
Not feeling any of that with this one.

Your mileage may vary.
