Besides not meeting expectations, one of the bigger reasons it lost money was its insane budget of nearly $300 million. It would have needed $800 million in grosses to return a profit, something no Jones films could do in this day and age.Well millions in advertising and etc will ensure opening years are likely larger in crowds. Also if it has issues of downtime, it will be interesting.
If Disney closed Dinosaur for a year and gave new show scenes and spent millions on promoting it as plussed. We would naturally see some sort of bump as well. Not on the scale of what they are doing but neither the scale of changes either.
For sure the new enhancements will draw people to it. That is more a ROI situation because of course something new and promoted will have novelty and enhancement at the bare minimum.
No matter what the merch sales or spendjng lernguest that rides will make them happier, but it is interesting how all of this was approved as Dial of Destiny showed the legacy alone is not as strong as Disney would hope for continuing.
It is also not equal in that Indy likely costs more to operate, even with so many things broken, Dinosaur has been even more neglected then it.
As you said, unfortunately Countdown to Extinction was solid anchor marquee but did not have supporting nearby to bring people to it.
Success would have bread success.
Yeah Disney was hoping...but popular with the public on par with modern theatrical hits of 100 million budget would have been a start.Besides not meeting expectations, one of the bigger reasons it lost money was its insane budget of nearly $300 million. It would have needed $800 million in grosses to return a profit, something no Jones films could do in this day and age.
Oh no… you mean the IJA plans have been scaled back compared to what @Moth (I think?) and others heard? So we should no longer be optimistic about this being “the best version” as suggested by insiders here previously? It would be nice if we were even getting that scale for WDW's like the original concept art depicted, but it has since been scaled down so much.
If it's going to be scaled down and crappy (as I would expect) then just keep Dinosaur. That's fine. That's fine. The large scene being perpetually wet and effects working was a much better set up than what was not with DL's. I like that the effects worked.

Wait, but the moving wall was only to simulate backing up. Are you sure they had the "moving jungle wall?"Clearly not many of you rode CTX back in the day because if you did, you would know the finale track is exactly the same as IJA because CTX ended with a meteor hurdling towards you. It had the moving (jungle) wall and the big bolder that had lighting and other effects to loook like a metor. The problem was it didn’t really work and instead looked like a slow moving bolder.
If Disney wanted to they could end IJA AK exactly like how the other two end.
Yes. The concept art had already changed by the time we got an update. The Pyramid is much smaller compared to the original announcement.... by scaled down do we mean scaled down compared to Disneyland IJA (again, makes sense due to architecture) or scaled down compared to the D23 concept art? Because if the latter... yeah just keep Dinosaur, much easier to just make the Dino Institute be a Latin American museum, lol. Maybe a branch of the Dinoland institute, retcon it so that the ride takes place in the Tropical Americas village instead of vaguely-Route-66-inspired-Florida.

Yeah. I don't think a jungle wall ever moved. That would not create the illusion of it coming towards you. Instead the meteor itself actually did move forward in CTX just slowly under a strobe light and it rotated on an axel. Thus giving a meteor coming at you. The ending had a rewrite early on to give it, more verbal impact of "They're not gonna make it" But as you will see in this video that I cannot time stamp. It really did for a split second look like a giant rock coming at your face. Go to 14:40
It worked fairly well in terms of concept actually. Upkeep may be a different story. People just wanted a dinosaur finale and the Carnatorus as he was the intensity of the movie that was coming out and the few run ins were not enough. They wanted him in the climax of the ride one more time. So they built the giant head on the forward part of the platform. Thus he seems closer as there is a strobe on it and the head is oversized to tell your brain he is in your face suddenly.
It is also funny to me that the burning atmosphere scent effect came back to the finale randomly at times over the years.
I could have sworn the wall still moved backwards as an illusion to make the metor look closer.
I’ve seen this before and it literally looks like it was photoshopped into the video… badly.
I think I’m missing something. Scaled down? What is and who said that? Thanks“Scaled down.”
I really just have to laugh at this point. This is already just a ride switcheroo they’re pulling off here for f’s sake. How much more do you possibly need to save.

You’re right the new one looks toned down. Lame! There has been talk, but more recently, the concept art changes have been brought up. At least in terms of perspective and expectation.

This gives the impression of many stairs, crumbling and looking like a south American Temple similar to the scale of the facade of Tokyo's. View attachment 818942
The more recent artwork...

Just barely covers the height of the current Dinosaur Entrance, which is not the tallest building in the world either. You can still see the basic shape on the sides of this and the temple very small.
If they’re not gonna do it right why do it at all? You’re right the new one looks toned down. Lame!
