If anyone here, or anywhere, actually believes that a well known health expert is lying to trick us into believing something, and putting lives on the line, then this country has more problems then I think it has.

You couldn’t pay me enough to do Fauci’s job, no matter what he says or does people will be upset, on top of that he has to find a happy medium between science, politics, economics, etc.

I’d love to know his real unfiltered thoughts because I think everything he says goes through a committee first to make sure it fits what others want him to say, and if/when he says what he thinks he often has to revise it later.

That people are lying to create a pretense for power and control has been a recurring narrative throughout the pandemic and it’s built on pre-existing views.

He has done it to himself. In June of 2020, he didn't say the science changed when asked specifically about why we were not wearing masks from the beginning. Saying the science evolved and we learned more would have made sense and would be consistent with his previous statement. It would have also aligned with what the surgeon general was saying at beginning. But rather than doing that, he talked about health care workers and the risk to our mask supply. Except he made no mention of that in March when he told us masks were not necessary. Hence the problem that he, and maybe those around him as well, created.

And then we can look to herd immunity... While he did say this goes up/down based on new studies, he also came out with this beauty of a statement....
"When polls said only about half of all Americans would take a vaccine, I was saying herd immunity would take 70 to 75 percent. Then, when newer surveys said 60 percent or more would take it, I thought, “I can nudge this up a bit,” so I went to 80, 85." Like what the heck?!?

Bottom line, how he is perceived is of his own doing. "The science has evolved" doesn't provide him cover for his statements. While I have never thought Fauci was doing things out of malice, I always thought he was the wrong face that our leaders were putting on TV as a messenger to the American people. He is just not that good at it.

That hockey rinks have been in lots of reports about transmission? (Not sure why, could the cold, hockey time, locker rooms, surrounding events, something else. Some of which apply here and some don't.)

That they wore self protection level masks not just "a few cloth strips"?

Personally, I'm no Olympian, I couldn't have played that well with or without a mask on. It's hard to argue that hitting the grocery store is harder than playing skilled hockey. I mean, sure, getting that triple coupon bonus on just the right product takes some skill.

I still don’t think it was a lie, it appears that was how he genuinely felt at the time but once he changed his mind (or he was told to say otherwise) they came up with the saving masks for health care employees story to explain his 180.

An email from Feb 2020 came out that he advised a staff member not to wear one "The typical mask you buy in the drug store is not really effective in keeping out virus, which is small enough to pass through material. It might, however, provide some slight benefit in keep out gross droplets if someone coughs or sneezes on you."

Why would he advise a White House staffer, before the public even knew Covid existed, not to wear one if he didn’t truly believe it? It’s not like telling that one person in a private email was going to prevent hospitals from getting them.

Had the story changed from we now recommend it because it helps prevent transmission to others, although still doesn’t provide much protection to yourself, I could buy it, but not the saving them for healthcare workers.

When it comes to masks and recommendations there’s a lot of revised history from all sides. It’s unfortunate we never got a unified message on whether or not they work and it’s unfortunate we’ll likely never know if they do because it’s become such a political football.

FaucI knew cloth masks were not as good as N95, and he did not want the public to buy up all the N95 masks so that the medical professionals working all day in the faces of folks infected with COVID would have them, so he said to the general public that masks didn’t work, probably because, like I suggested, if he had said to the general public, please use cloth masks as it will help with casual contact but leave the N95 masks for the medical professionals, folks would have bought up all the N95s anyway.

Therefore, it was easier to say, masks don’t work.

Exactly. He didn't lie. He told the truth based on his knowledge of respiratory viruses and PPE. He changed his tune when it started to become a thing to "do something" to make people feel safer and to have something for people to use for virtue signaling but he didn't want people trying to purchase the N95 respirators that would actually work when worn properly.

Just go back early in this thread and see all of the posters patting themselves on the back for caring so much about everybody else that they make sure to wear a piece of t-shirt on their face and how those same posters shamed those of us who didn't want to.

One positive test and your Olympic dreams are over. Many who had medal hopes couldn't participate, or, once there, removed from competition.

I wouldn't blame them if they used full astronaut helmets.

The cost for popping a positive test is you can't compete. Considering, the Canadian Women are likely going to make the Gold Medal game vs the Americans, it's important that their team stays Covid negative. The ROC did not provide the Canadian team with proof of negative tests before the start of the game, as required. At this point, 6 ROC hockey players had already tested positive, so there were legitimate concerns that additional players might. At first, the Canadian team refused to take the ice at all until the results were received and the ROC players cleared. The negotiation was they would play if both teams played masked. In the third period, the results arrived and the ROC players removed their masks but the Canadians choose to leave theirs on.

Not true. This has been repeated so many times by the anti-Fauci crowd that a lot of people believe it. What he said was far more nuanced, but people aren't good at nuance.

I'm all for masking , I mask but when I was in hospital most recently for emergency procedure , prior to procedure had covid test in ER , and all I saw including hospital staff , not one wore a N95 mask , but instead wore the standard hospital medical mask. The surgeon did make a joke minutes before the operation happened. There was a TV on the wall for him to assist with my surgery. I commented are we going to watch movies? The surgeon replied it is a 4K TV and I am paying for it.

I am happy to think your surgeon and his staff were focused of saving you and not what mask they had on. Hope all is well!

There are very strict and specific protocols for surgeons that include masks that radically reduced the risks associated with surgery.

To me, a mask mandate is a mask mandate. Just wear it. No virtue signal there.
If there is someplace I want to be that requires masks, I wear it because I want to be there.
I want to fly, I wear a mask because I want to get from point a to point b with no drama.

Yeah I wondered about that for some saying it. I was just curious. I mean I have to wear one in schools. When a place asks me to wear, which there are mandates again here I wear. So lately I wear it all over because 90%+ ask Eben if not mandated. I just go with the if someone asks, I put it on. Why make a fuss?

I will say this summer we had everything dropped and we did go everywhere without them. Then cases and Delta and now omicron and rules and requests to wear returned. Looking forward to no masks as a whole. Though they are warm outside when cold. I plan to keep cloth ones to use instead of scarves. Might sound weird but more portable than a scarf tbh and I like them better than balaclava in terms of fit
