Yikes they set the imagineering bar really low for that expanded area, lacking that magical touch. Ugly.

Well considering these planters are in what was part of the parade route I guess we can officially say goodbye to any kind of parade coming back to DAK

Seeing as it was just a walkway expansion for nighttime entertainment, i'm not exactly sure what you were expecting.

And the Hub of the Magic Kingdom will be just the same. So should we have little expectations for the hub if that is the bar you are going to use for theming?

The hub is a much larger area, much larger project and it will have a lot of trees, bushes, and flower beds. Look at the screen capture in the hub thread.

The two projects aren't even comparable. This project was simply to give room for performers and increased traffic. The area isn't even that big to start with.

What is different, They are both walkways doubling as entertainment viewing areas, very comparable. MK is themed, Disney just opted to go cheap on this and leave it ugly, nothing more and nothing new this century. AK could have been a nicer project, landscaped nicely but that would have to be funded.

They're walkways.
Put things in them, be it benches or too many plants etc. and the purpose gets defeated because traffic snarls.
Strollers bottleneck, Wall E scooter riders bottleneck...
I'd be willing to bet that WDW views tons of footage of these areas at different times of the year to gauge how an expansion should be done.

New construction walls at entrance to Discovery Island. Photo update as of Saturday, Jan 10. Two entrances to Island Mercantile have been closed off, with construction walls taking up a lot of space on the left side of Discovery Island plaza. The construction walls on the right side have been expanded into the plaza. The result is a new "choke point" just as you cross the entrance bridge onto Discovery Island.

The photo below was taken from the newly opened Discovery plaza looking back towards the bridge to the park's exit. On the left is the construction wall near the Wilderness Explorer's kiosk (seen above on the right), and on the right is the construction wall in front of Island Mercantile.

Construction area closer to Tree of Life. Photo update as of Saturday, Jan 10. There are three poles visible above the construction wall that are probably part of the new entertainment venue for the Tree of Life. Two poles visible in the photo below. One additional pole on the opposite side. The structure on the right pole has Animal Kingdom designs on the sides of the box.
