Where are the famed zippity-doo-dah road strips? Can one drive over there and drive on them, or is it a closed-guarded area?

I could have sworn that I saw a post here or somewhere else about a test version of the strips in a bus or maintenance building parking lot or at the old abandoned air strip or somewhere like that where a CM drove over them with a fellow CM in a service vehicle, but I'll be darned if I can find the post now.

I know a lot about Disney, but this is a stupid question, I'm sure...

What are you talking about? Can you elaborate a little?

Thanks!

Not stupid at all. It was a topic on this board a couple of years ago and it shows up every now and then. The basic story is that at one point Disney was developing a type of series of "speed bumps" that when drove over sequentially would make the tune of Zip a dee do dah. The test site for this sequence of bumps was (as far as I know) at the old STOLport by the Magic Kingdom. Disney later abandoned the idea for some reason or another (I believe they just couldn't get them to work in a way they wanted because they only worked at an exact speed limit or something like that) and eventually the bumps were removed as well.

To answer the original poster: If they were still there, which they are not, you would be able to get to them without going past a guard although you might have wanted to make sure no one was around anyway.

wow, words cant even describe how large your ego is judging from this statement. I hope I'm wrong.

I've never heard of these "strips", but it sounds awesome. I wish they would go ahead with them, that would be amazing.

Yeah, he definitely has an ego issue because he dared ask a question. The nerve of some people, huh?

I was referring to the quotation below...

"I know a lot about Disney, but this is a stupid question, I'm sure..."

Just because you didn't know the what he was talking about, doesn't make it stupid.

I'm sorry, I think I might have read that wrong. It seemed to me like you were saying the original poster's question was stupid. Or were you saying your question is stupid?

He was referring to his own personal question being a stupid one, as in he assumed that the roadstrips were common knowledge that he should know about. Not the original posters question being stupid.

If I remember correctly, I'll look through some books, I think that's where I read it, but the private airstrip that is to the east of World Drive just south of MK, did in fact have strips of concrete that were raised (or lowered, I can't remember) that when the plane rolled over them, the rhythm of Zippity-doo-dah. They wanted to do the same thing on the roads within WDW but they couldn't achieve the same effect because while a small private plane when landing, would hit each strip with just one set of wheels, while a car would hit each strip twice, two sets of wheels.

Anyone feel free to correct if I have been mistaken of misled.

I am calling "fins" on all this musical pavement :)

As for the planes, I cannot for the life of me see the FAA allowing "rumble strips" to be put on an active runway. Just not going to happen.

As for cars, maybe it was an idea the WDI was batting around, but to me it just seems like there are too many variables (speed, wheelbase, tire size, etc) to make it work. In addition, I assume you want the cars to go over them at "normal" speed, so they cannot be too big, but then they would wear. They would have to make them either out of concrete or maybe steel, as opposed to molding them into the asphalt.

Maybe I am wrong, and maybe it does exist somewhere, I just remain skeptical on this one untill I see some real firsthand proof, not an "My mothers second uncles best friends roomate saw them once on a rainy night"

There is an article about the STOLport runway from Jim Hill..
http://jimhillmedia.com/blogs/jim_hill/archive/2005/03/08/554.aspx

It's visible on the Satellight images or you'll see it after you pass the MK tollbooth.

It's tucked away on the hiddenmickeys site but it's pretty old and anonymously confirmed number 13 about halfway down the page:

Sorry for trying to spread a rumor, my memory fails me sometimes. Thanks for the correction.

I remember being told about this a long time ago (about 10-12 yrs ago?) while on a backstage magic tour (back when the backstage tours were actually for kids instead of banning kids).

From what I remember being told they were rumble strips that when driven over at a specific speed would play the song. I think I remember being told something about they were initially developed by an outside source and then disney worked with them or something along those lines. I don't remember the reason we were told that they never went further than the test strip.

Can someone help me out with a more exact time frame for when I was on that tour?, I remember that everyone on the tour was invited to see a taping of the Mickey Mouse Club but I was about 4 months too young to be allowed in the audiance. I am 25 now. Anyone remember the minimum audiance age?

There was a test strip layed on the STOLport years ago. Apparently it worked but was taken no further.

I know this is the story that goes around, but has it ever really been confirmed? I've never been able to track down any photo, audio or video of it. Nor have I been able to find anyone reliable who has witnessed it. I have put it in my list of "never really happened". Do you have anything solid on it?

I thought it was the private airstrip too. I believe it's no longer in use which would explain the whole FAA thing but do recall that Disney got away with a lot of stuff when building WDW.
