Zika Impact

Bad things happen to bad people. It is called Karma and by raising prices to unfathomable levels, Disney asked for this. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of crooks and I hope it stings very, very bad. Perhaps by our next trip in 2018, I will be able to buy a Mickey Bar for each of my kids without having to tap into their education fund.

Yet you feel compelled to give this bunch of crooks more of your hard earned money in 2018? Not everyone can afford a Disney vacation, but $100 a day for a ticket is certainly not "unfathomable". By the way, isn't wishing bad things (hope it stings very, very bad) on others bringing bad Karma back against you? Those bad things you want to happen to those bad Disney management people may cause innocent people to lose their jobs.

That's what I don't understand. If you hate a company, think they're crooks, disagree with them fundamentally-enough so that you're expressing that hate in almost every thread on a Disney fan site, how can you rationalize giving them more money? Or any money?

There are a few companies that I do actually hate. They have not, and will not, see a dollar of my hard earned money. Ever. Not willingly anyway.

There was a can of bug repellent in our room at BLT and my wife figured it was complimentary since this whole "scare" is going on. Getting that virus is literally right near the very bottom of my list of worrisome things though.

Hadn't non-human-human transmissions in Florida already been confirmed?

Yes - but it's important to monitor the mosquito population to know how the much the virus is circulating and in order to project the local transmission rate. According to the article, ZIKV was found in 3 mosquitoes and 94 or 95? tested negative. This means that the outbreak cluster should continue to remain limited (although an adult female mosquito bites dozens in their lifespan). Eg transmission projection based on 50 infected mosquitoes vs 5 infected mosquitoes paints very different epidemiological pictures.

ETA: Also, a recent study found that the mosquitoes are passing it on to their offspring, at a rate of 1/300. So the ZIKV vector transmission cycle can continue across annual mosquito seasons. An incredibly low rate to be sure, but a new discovery nonetheless and important for preparedness and mosquito control efforts.

This is not good and I was hoping the most serious side effect of ZIKA, microcephaly, was limited to Brazil because of the pesticides that they put in their water. Sadly, it is not and if I were a pregnant woman or thinking of becoming pregnant in the near future, I would not step foot in Florida or WDW for that matter because it is only a matter of time before ZIKA appears in Walt Disney World.

84 Pregnant Women in Florida Infected With Zika Virus

Health officials in Florida confirmed Thursday that 84 pregnant women in the state have been infected with the Zika virus. Speaking at a forum on the virus at the University of Miami, doctors said they have been urging the infected women to speak publicly about the issue in order to draw attention to the virus, but only one has so far agreed to do so. The forum came just a day after a baby born at Jackson Memorial Hospital to an infected mother was found to have microcephaly. Microcephaly, perhaps the most feared effect of Zika, is a congenital defect causing incomplete brain development. Doctors said Thursday that they expect to see a spike in the number of babies born to Zika-infected mothers within the next few months. So far, there have been 56 cases of the virus being transmitted locally in the state, with most of the infections happening in Miami-Dade County. An additional 604 infections resulted from travel. Health workers throughout the state have been urged to test all pregnant women for the virus, regardless of whether or not they have symptoms.

This is not the first time this has happened in the US. Babies have been born in New York, California, Texas, and elsewhere with microcephaly as well. Can we please stop acting and spreading things that make Florida look dangerous.

Perspective matters.

Its a mess down there. Wait until you see the after effects of the Naled they are spraying.
I think they are handling it the best way they can. It's done early in the morning and kids are recommended to stay inside.
I am not for the aerial sprays, I don't think most are for it. What I think is that this country goes in to panic mode, as evidenced above, and as a result drastic measures need to be taken. The CDC is not interested in the environment, it was on their recommendation that Dade County now decided to spray in Miami.

The difference in this case is that North Carolina did not notify the bee keepers. At least in Miami they have everyone warning and instructions of what to do to keep safe. I am worried about the butterflies, produce, and countless other animals and wildlife.

Agree 100%. That link was just the first article I found showing some of the consequences of spraying.

I'm hoping that it won't be too bad. I just think it's really sad that they've gone to these measures, but that's what happens when you get pressured from the outside. :(. If it works and the mosquitos die, and everything else is fine, then we'll all be thrilled. So I'm trying to remain optimistic.

I was being sarcastic but if you are happy paying an arm and a leg every time you visit Disney, have at it. We all know that Disney sets the bar when it comes to pricing and I will guarantee that once ZIKA sucks some of the greed out of their business model, they will bring their prices down and others will follow suit.

Disney is a public company. Disney should be setting its ticket pricing for profit maximization and has a fiduciary obligation to its shareholders to do so. I don't see it as greedy at all ... I see it as fulfilling their obligations to their shareholders. If/when people stop paying the prices, the prices will go down. If Disney becomes too expensive for me, then I will go elsewhere. That is how it should be. WDW is far from a necessity.

If you could give us a breakdown of those 84 pregnant women and tell us how many contracted zika in Florida compared to how many are travel related cases that would be great. If the numbers are higher for travel cases then surely the advice should be Don't travel OUTSIDE of Florida ?

Apparently DCL is now providing repellent when you arrive to a port. On Caribbean itineraries.

Not in the cabins though, you are still advised to bring your own or purchase onboard.
