Dead Right! Ah, but you see, you are getting those mature "tentacle sections" from OLDER Squid - they need to be beat up a bit just to make something edible....
Now, whole pan fried BABY Squid (think "bait") - whole different story . Dad was a commercial fisherman for about 10 years: his story was simple - "If you don't catch anything? Dinner is the bait". Boy, could he cook bait - later in life, he became the Maitre D' at several of San Francisco's best Restaurants, circa 1955 - 1975 .
I would also hazard a guess that the squid went in the hot pan, and were out again very quickly. If you cook squid just a bit too long it turns to rubber, unless you cook it further for a really really really long time.
