Trip Report You Can't Beat This Deal...Two Trip Reports for the Price of One! *COMPLETED*

Hi Everyone!

As some of you may know, it's been a very busy, Disney filled, end of the summer for us! After scrambling to find new vacations plans thanks to Hurricane Lane and having just returned from a solo trip to attend the Disney Institute Approach to Quality Service course, I have almost been able to get all of the photos downloaded and I'm nearly ready to report on our adventures.

Both trips we're remarkably different from what our typical Disney trip would look like but both were fantastic experiences and I'm really looking forward to sharing them with you.

I am planning on uploading the last of our pictures from the camera tonight and will start diving into the details very soon!

We had arrived at the line to meet Lotso just as the party had officially begun at 7. The line was pretty healthy already but it looked far more manageable than the Moana line in December. I was hopeful things would move a lot quicker since Lotso can’t talk to guests which should keep things moving.

It was still raining but much lighter than earlier in the afternoon. The girls had no interest in waiting in line with me so Kelly took them on the PeopleMover while I shuffled my way through the line. Lennon is still obsessed with that ride and since it was just a few feet from the Lotso line it made for an easy time killer.

It was pretty fun to watch other guests jump in and meet Lotso. So many excited kids which I found odd considering he was a villain in the movie. I was curious to find out if he actually smelled like strawberries but would task the kids with finding out as it would just be creepy to see a middle-aged man sniffing a giant pink teddy bear.

The girls found me in line after their ride and while we were pretty close to the front, I left the line to grab some popcorn for us to snack on. I returned to find us just a few families away. The line moved much quicker this time around. Only about 30 minutes from start to finish. We got up to the front and were informed we’d be the last family before a quick break.

We jumped in and the kids were all over Lotso.

We even got a few unique shots as he went for a quick break...we coulda used that umbrella!

And according to the girls he did not smell like Strawberries!

From Lotso we hit up the Monsters Inc. Dance Party for a little bit. I am not a dancer but the girls seemed to be happy to bust some moves for a few minutes.

We were reminded that we needed to find more candy spots but as we were walking around the park it was clear the candy lines were the most popular stops for everyone. The lines to grab a handful of treats were massive. We passed a few but ended up walking through Cosmic Rays to fill our bags before making our way over to Dumbo for a soggy soar.

No waits for Dumbo or the Barnstormer so we rode those back to back before jumping in another candy line near the Fantasyland train station entrance. Lines we pretty much this big, if not bigger, everywhere candy was being handed out.
WDW 2018 by Matt Mandrusiak, on Flickr

With the bags filled with another helping we walked towards Ariel and ended up right back in another candy line where the Ariel meet and greet would normally be. We worked through another long line, loaded our bags and hopped on the Undersea Adventure.

Thankfully the rain had stopped at this time and we decided it would be a good time to walk towards the Haunted Mansion to look for picture spots and to jump on the ride. What better night to tour the mansion along with 999 happy haunts.

As we got toward HM, Kelly spotted the Tangled lantern PhotoPass opportunity and immediately jumped in line. She had been talking about this for months and was super excited to wait for it. The line was pretty long and it was closing in on about 830 or 9 at this point. The girls had yet to eat dinner and were getting pretty hungry so I went searching for a hot dog while Kelly waited with them.

I found the dogs right near the Hall of Presidents and was back within about 8 minutes after leaving to find their grub. They were about halfway to the front which gave us enough time to eat before their pics. However, as we went to give Ella some insulin for her meal, the device that does all of the calculations and administers the insulin to Ella’s pump slipped out of Kelly’s hand and came crashing to the ground. It landed face down on the hard concrete and we froze just looking at it. As we picked it up and it became clear it was not turning back on, we panicked thinking that the device was broken and we were in deep, deep trouble!

Admittedly we, ok I, had a bit of a freakout but put that aside to figure out next steps. This wasn’t the first time something like this has happened and in a previous episode with this problem, we were able to reset the device and getting it working again but we needed to find something small to hit the reset button. I ended up rushing to the First Aid station to seek out a needle, a safety pin or a paper clip to help us out. I arrived in a huff and the nurse on call was super quick and helpful after I explained the situation.

She did have a safety pin which enabled me to push the button and thankfully the device popped back on and was up and running again. The only issue now is that the pump that Ella was currently wearing was no longer connected to the device due to the reset and of course, like ill-prepared parents, we had not packed a replacement pump. The nurse was great to inform me that they had needles we could use if needed and paramedics on standby should something go awry. I thanked her for her help and rushed back to the girls.

As I was gone the girls had scarfed down their dogs and taken their pictures. We potentially had a massive issue on our hands had the device been broken but I guess that would have been something we’d deal with after the lantern picture was taken!

With all of the craziness that had just taken place and the wait for the photo, we decided or next move would be to skip the Haunted Mansion and find spots for the earlier parade that would be somewhere close to the First Aid station just in case we needed to duck in there for an insulin shot.

We ended up front row just outside the Liberty Tree Tavern which gave us a great viewing area for the parade and a chance to escape to First Aid if needed. One thing was for sure, we needed a chance to settle down for a bit and get our bearings back!

What a night! So glad the rain slowed down and I'm sorry about the craziness of Ella's pump.

Tell Kelly that Neverland sign is adorable! Where did she find it? I'm sure you said where but I can't remember.

It was a bit of a wild night with some unexpected twists. The girls handled the rain really well which was kind of surprising but they toughed it out until it stopped.

Kelly ordered both the Neverland and Home signs from an Instagram account she follows, fortheloveofcraftsbyrbt. She's become a little obsessed with these signs but they seem super tough to buy so at least that has limited the amount she has spent so far!

The photos of each of your daughters with the lantern are fantastic - definitely frame-worthy!

They did turn out really well. I was bummed to have missed it in person while I was running around trying to fix the pump but I have no doubt these pics might end up somewhere on Kelly's Disney wall.

WOW! I'm hopeful everything worked out in the end with her pump! Disney is great at preparing for so many different scenarios. As a parent, though; that must have been terrifying!

That they do, something I learned a lot about and got a firsthand look at during the Disney Institute course.

As we hunkered in for the parade to start we still had about 15 minutes to wait. Ella’s glucose levels started rising pretty rapidly which wasn’t a surprise considering she just ate with no insulin. Kelly decided to take her to first aid to administer an insulin shot and try to hustle back before things started.

Me and Lennon waited it out, trying to secure enough space for Kelly and Ella to come back and jump in. People had been eyeing up any open spaces so we had to defend the turf a little. After about 10 minutes Ella and Kelly reappeared and were able to reclaim their territory. Sounded like the first aid area was super-efficient and very helpful so that eased our mind a little about how the rest of the night would go. Thank goodness for that constant glucose monitor which makes it so much easier for us to track her levels. Even with her not constantly getting insulin like she would if her pump was working, we could keep a close eye on her.

The lights dropped and the Boo To You music started playing. It was parade time! Because of the rain and the wet surfaces the headless horseman did not lead the parade as he normally would which was too bad but totally understandable. We were excited for one of our favourite parades nonetheless and it didn’t disappoint. Great parade with some terrific character interaction. The girls got high fives from quite a few that walked by. They were beyond excited each time someone approached. It was very cool.

Besides the headless horseman, the only minor downfall from the rain was the lack of sparks flying from the shovels of the gravediggers. The wet ground kinda muted some of that stuff but there’s not much you can do for that.

With the parade now over and a stream of people clearing out, we decided to make our way to Adventureland to ride Pirates. We heard there were some special things lined up on the ride because of the party so we thought we’d check it out. The wait was posted at 30 minutes so we jumped in and made our way through the queue.

First new wrinkle was a pirate locked up in a cell leading through the queue interacting with guests and pleading for them to help her escape. It was pretty funny but kinda freaked out the girls. Having been on the ride a few times already they weren’t sure how that girl got there in the first place!

The queue moved very quickly and we only ended up waiting about 10 minutes before we were in the loading area where another gent was warning us about a pirate he was trying to capture, Gunpowder Pete. We were told to be on the lookout which had Ella and Lennon on high alert! The actor was really fun and quite quick as he interacted with guests. Made for some good laughs as people were passing by.

We got on the ride and sailed through the Caribbean. Everything was as it normally is until we were sailing under a bridge and Gunpowder Pete appeared asking for the boats help and picking out sailors to chirp at from each boat. Lennon was one of them which made her blush and hide in my arm a little. Both Ella and Lennon were very confused as to how he got on the bridge. They’d never seen anyone on there in previous rides. Pretty cool touch to make the ride just a little more fun for the party.
WDW 2018 by Matt Mandrusiak, on Flickr

After Pirates we found a quick PhotoPass spot before jumping into a line to meet Jafar that wasn’t too long. We figured we’d have enough time for that before finding somewhere to watch the fireworks.

When it was our turn for photos both of the girls were a little cautious but warmed up pretty quickly. It was actually kinda funny to watch when they went to leave and say goodbye they went to give him a hug which he definitely played up. He acted pretty hesitant at first but relented and let them do it eventually! Kelly was pumped to check off another character we’d yet to meet on previous trips.

As we said goodbye the fireworks started going off so we hustled back towards Liberty Square to watch them. There weren’t a lot of people around, assuming most were smart and had good viewing on Main Street, so we settled in near the river and watched the sky. It would have been cool to see the show as intended but we still enjoyed it and had some cool views we wouldn’t get on Main Street.

After the fireworks we were a tad conflicted with what to do next. The girls wanted to keep going, of course, but Kelly and I were a little worried that maybe we should head back home to make sure we could get Ella a new pump and get things back on track. We figured with the hoard of people that was likely to be leaving the park after the fireworks that we could end up waiting quite some time for a bus to get back to Port Orleans.

We ended up deciding to push through a sea of people and make our way out to head home. Main Street was packed, as you’d expect, but we did get through unscathed and I didn’t run over anyone with the stroller. Win-Win. On the way out we stopped at the main entrance for a few final PhotoPass opportunities before heading to the bus stop. Len was pretty tired at this point, actually I think she was asleep in the stroller so it was just the three of us.
WDW 2018 by Matt Mandrusiak, on Flickr

We left the park around 11 and surprisingly we didn’t have a long wait, nor was there a huge line for the bus. It was full, but not crazy. We departed for the hotel but ended up waiting for a stalled bus to clear just passed the underpass by the water canal for seven seas lagoon. We were at a standstill for about 20 minutes before we finally got moving again.

By the time we made it back to the resort, it was a little past 1130 and we were able to get a new pump on Ella and try to get things back to normal. It had been a long day and with all the excitement and drama at different times, I think everyone was feeling pretty good about crawling into bed and getting some rest. I’m glad Kelly went ahead and bought the Halloween Party tickets. Even with the rain it was still a lot of fun and the kids had a blast.

So sorry about the issue with Ella, but great to know that Disney is prepared for something like that!

Also, I love that picture of Lennon and Lotso - it looks like she is really trying to smell him!

Thanks! We were happy things worked out ok in the end, but it was another wakeup call for us to be a little more prepared. We made sure we had an extra pump with us at all times for the rest of the trip just in case.

I’m late to the party here..... only just started and still on the opening comments on page 1 but thought I’d check in to say I’m in!

2 reports in 1 I can’t wait.

Looking forward to seeing how it all plans out given the changes from Hawaii. Now going back to the start to continue from you just getting off the plane!

all caught up just as the battery died on my iPad.

Great trip so far - had many comments but can’t remember now but loving following along and looking forward to more.

You have an adorable family and have proved that even at the last minute you can have @ great time in Disney (although that in my mind was never in doubt)

Hoping to get to a MNSSHP next year so loving your thoughts and photos on that.

Thanks for sharing

Thank you very much for following our adventures and for the kind words!

We knew we’d end up having a great time even if it wasn’t quite the trip we were looking forward to. You can never go wrong in WDW though!

I’m sure you’d have a great time at MNSSHP if you end up there next year. So much fun stuff going on and way too much candy!

WOW!!! The pirates ride sounds super cool for the party! Even as a grown up, I'd be confused like your girls wondering how they can add effects and people/characters to rides so quickly! I'm glad you got to see the fireworks that night, bummer you had to leave early but it's always better to be safe.
We just watched a Disney Halloween Special on Freeform which talked about how they create the dance sequence for the parade and the sparks from the shovels. If you get that channel in Canada, it's worth checking if they re-air it or if you can stream it from online.

Oddly enough Kelly and I were talking about this special last night. We have it set to tape on our PVR on Halloween night. I loved the Christmas special last year, looking forward to seeing the Halloween version!

Day Five – EPCOT

With our late night, we had planned to let the kids sleep in a bit before heading over to spend the morning at EPCOT. The moms knew we were going to be taking it easy and we’d message them when we were getting up.

The girls were sound asleep but I was up shortly before 8 am. I wanted to get another run around the Port Orleans resorts in before everyone else got up so I quietly got my run stuff together and slipped out the door. The sun was shining, the weather was perfect and I was off running around the river.

It was such a peaceful, quiet run around the resort with a few families up and about heading from their rooms to the food courts or to catch a bus to head to a park. I really enjoyed running around the Riverside area. French Quarter is great because it’s smaller and certainly more convenient with the single bus stop but Riverside just has this great ambiance that I would really like to check out on a future trip.

Even early in the morning, the humidity definitely got to me and my short 3K run had me sweating like crazy once I got back to the room. The kids were stirring at this point and Kelly was already in the shower getting ready. I woke the kids, got Ella her insulin and prepared breakfast for them before hopping in the shower myself and getting ready for the day.

We ended up meeting the moms somewhere around 9 am and made our way to the bus stop to hitch a ride to EPCOT. Sounded like the moms really enjoyed their quiet evening of exploring and shopping. The kids told them all about what they missed at the Halloween Party as we waited for the bus.

The bus arrived, we jumped on and took our seats and arrived at EPCOT around 930 am. Food and Wine had just kicked off and we noticed lots of new signage that wasn’t displayed just a few days earlier.

The land was our first stop to use our FP+ for Living with the Land. Before we made it to the queue, we stopped by Soarin’ to get a return time for when we were done with LWL. We made the short walk back to scan our bands and wait for our boat.

LWL is not the flashiest ride or anything but I always enjoy riding just to see all the cool stuff that Disney is doing to try and produce sustainable food within the resort. It’s impressive to see all the different crops/fish they are growing and to hear about how they are being put to use at different restaurants.

When our ride was complete, the return time for Soarin’ was open so that was our next stop. Easily one of the moms top attractions and Lennon had now completely come around to the ride which she was leery of leading into the trip. I’m not sure what I would consider my favourite scene in the new version but I do really dig the scenery and scents of the savannah and the Fijian island.

After Soarin’ we made a quick stop at Sunshine Season to grab a free water and a quick snack. Kelly was all over a cupcake and the girls were happy to grab a cookie so Kelly wasn’t eating alone. We pulled up to a table quickly to eat the snacks before heading out to our next stop.
WDW 2018 by Matt Mandrusiak, on Flickr

Because we were close enough we decided to head over to Journey into the Imagination which had essentially no wait time.
WDW 2018 by Matt Mandrusiak, on Flickr

Before heading in we had to take a washroom break which allowed me to enjoy some of the sights and sounds of the park while waiting for everyone to reconvene.
WDW 2018 by Matt Mandrusiak, on Flickr

Once everyone was back together, off we went to sing along with Figment. Hopefully I wouldn’t be humming “Imagination…Imagination” all day but it always seems to get caught in my head no matter what!

After Figment we had a bit of a discussion on what to do next. Ella really wanted to ride Mission:Space, which was good by me, but the rest of the group had no interest. We ended up deciding that Ella and I would go ride and the rest of the group was going to ride the Grand Fiesta Tour, something the moms had never done and something we had only done for the first time last December.

Everyone seemed happy with the plan and we set off on our separate ways. On our walk to MS, I tried to convince Ella to ride the orange side but sadly no dice! Ella was very excited to blast off into space again but wasn’t quite ready for any more g-forces on her body.
WDW 2018 by Matt Mandrusiak, on Flickr

As is the case most times when we ride MS, the line for the green side was posted at 5 minutes. We rolled right through the queue and were placed in our line for our mission almost immediately. Our flight team was rounded out by a pair of older ladies who seemed up to the task of completing a successful mission.

Jessica Pearson (for any Suits fans) gave us our marching orders, assigned us our roles and led us to our ships.
WDW 2018 by Matt Mandrusiak, on Flickr

I’m a fan of the ride, just like Ella, though it’s not a must ride for me on every trip. That said, we did have fun and even though I wasn’t sure those older ladies would get us home safe, they came through and we survived our space flight.

Ella and I then walked into the world showcase and found the group hanging around the Mexico pavilion. The moms really liked Donald’s boat ride (according to Lennon) and were pretty surprised to see what was going on inside the pavilion. Like us, they had never really spent much time going through and seeing what the pavilions actually hold, outside of attractions and restaurants.

We decided to walk around the World Showcase for a bit to find some adult snacks/bevvies but before we got rolling we ended up stopping in Norway to meet Anna and Elsa as the wait time was only about 15 minutes. The moms decided to keep going to explore some of the other pavilions and we’d meet up after the meet and greet. I do enjoy the detail of the queue that leads you to the sisters. Lots of cool Frozen stuff around which Ella and Lenny are quick to point out.

The wait was less than ten minutes before we were next in line and the girls were in their glory. They had nonstop questions for both Anna and Elsa and the characters were quick to indulge their goofy quips. Lennon was really excited that her dress was similar to Elsa’s which made her day.
