Trip Report Yia-Yia, Yetis and Epcotonians. A sweltering Summer of '22 adventure!

It was the night before our Disney trip and I found myself scrambling. So much to do besides "Disney but "Disney" needed to get done. Where are my SD cards? Where are all my Star Wars shirts? Where is my camera bag? We had just moved after-all and things were not where they should be because well we were in a different house. Toni was scrambling too. She is spending the Summer waitressing in Bethany Beach Delaware and came home THAT DAY to get everything ready for Disney. Her Mom however also wanted her to help get her "crap" ready for college (leaving in a few weeks). Tensions were running high and the early morning flight out of Baltimore was like lighting a fuse to a stick of dynamite. Time was ticking away!

This was going to be a different trip for us. Just three of the five in the family as my wife Val decided to sit this one out and my daughter Alex couldn't get her schedule to work. So Val will be going to New Mexico to visit Alex in a month as the final three, the triumvirate headed to Walt Disney World to meet up with my sister Marina's family and my mom (Yia-Yia).

The Triumvirate -

Toni (center), Sterg and yours truly.

As you may or may not know, one of the things I love about going to Disney is honing my photography skills. For this trip I decided to rent two fantastic (and expensive) lenses. The Sony GM 50mm f/ 1.2 and the Sony GM 14mm f/1.8 lenses to be exact. The cost to buy both of those lenses would be as much as the cost of the entire trip. Additionally I rented a lens adaptor to pair with my old Minolta 70-210 "beercan" lens that I wanted to try out on the Safari.

I've been crazy after the 14mm lens due to it's wide angle nature. It's actually so wide it's referred to as an "ultra-wide angle" lens. Wide angle lenses have wonderful applications at WDW and I was going to see how this baby was going to work for me. The 50mm 1.2 is a lens with a great reputation. Very fast, very sharp and producing beautiful bokeh as your sharp subject stands in front of a background that literally melts into a dreamy blur of photographic delight.

By 11pm all that was packed, what was left of my Star Wars shirts was packed - "Chris, aren't we just getting a bit too old for Star Wars shirts?" Val quipped - and everything else on my list was packed.

Toni was also packed and had full-filled her "getting ready for college" obligations.

Val said her goodbyes and goodnights..

and went to bed.

It was soon time for me to lay down for 3 hours of sleep. The hardest thing left for me to do was wake up with my alarm. I think I'll have a glass on wine (or two?). After-all, what could go wrong?

I love this chandelier. I took this shot right after Sterg and I commented on the marvelous BC Lobby scent. Something we always enjoy as it fills us with memories of past trips.

On our way to the IG. Team Marina was just ahead of us. We arrived around 8:15. EPCOT opened at 9 but at 8 for Deluxe guests (Destino/Coronado is a Moderate). Thanks to a tip by @coachwnh we got there early and tried our luck.

The Force was with us that morning as we got in with no problems. It might have been the Jedi mind trick I used.

Group shot with Fractal shirts. I felt a little weird at first because I didn't know how Team Marina would react. I also decided not to ask before the trip if they wanted to wear them as I didn't want them to feel like they had to. Team Marina however loved them and were very cool with it. So next trip we'll all sport them.

It was a beautiful morning in France! Our first stop was an early standby for Ratatouille.

DSC01325-X3.jpg

Bill and I had a few conversations before the trip about how we attack the Parks. I told him we go early before the crowds, spend the afternoon cooling off and go back out in the evening. They tended to sleep in more than we did but for this trip we followed our strategy and Bill and Aidan loved it. Both are active with Aidan achieving his Eagle Scout in high school and loves camping and hiking. In fact they both missed our 2017 trip because they were out West on a long hiking trip in the Mountains of Colorado. They certainly were up to the challenge of early morning Park commando mode. YiaYia was tired from the day before so she opted to stay back at the resort (which would cause issues of its own).

Getting closer!

All of the parks open 30 minutes early for guests staying at any resort on property! Not just Deluxe! Loving the pics!

Shark Reef closed in October 2016. And when we went in the 90s, Shark Reef was free!
Ok, so I'm NOT crazy. We were there at the end of July in 2016 and there was a big sign advertising shark reef for only $20 per person!! I asked a CM when they had started charging for it, because I could have sworn the Unofficial Guide had said it was free, and she said they had "always charged for that".

I have a question for you! Did you make an ADR for Yak and Yeti, or did you just walk up and show your landry's card to get in? I have never used mine for priority seating, so I'm not really sure how that particular feature works. I know you are supposed to get seated first, but I don't know if you need to make a reservation for that to work.

I am completely in love with this photo!!!!

Thanks @cgersic ! It's one on my favorites!

I agree completely. I think the only way to make it better, one would need to be standing there physically. Wow!

I suffer from the same condition!

😂We’ll, that goes to show how long it’s been since I’ve visited a water park at Disney. Still loved Shark Reef, it was always free when we went.

Time to go back!

That would certainly explain it.

I made reservations through Landry's.

You can call Yak and Yeti directly and make a reservation or walk up and present your card. If you know when you’ll be in AK, and when you’d prefer to eat, calling would probably work the best. If you happened to hop to AK and decided to eat there presenting the membership card has always secured us a table quickly.

They are a Landry's location and if you have the Landry's Select Club card then they can get you in with no issues. We called T-Rex directly for an ADR (Yes. We like that place. :) ) after not being able to get one through Disney Dining. They said they were full and had no availability. I told them I am a Landry's Select Club member and they had a reservation in the system for us right away. :)

Yes - correction @Songbird76 ! I did call Yak&Yeti directly, told them I was a card holder and got a reservation no problem. It's all in my pre-trip report...

We hit the gates of MK about 15 minutes after the early 9pm fireworks shore. There was a mass of guests leaving the Park so we had to fight our way in. The tunnel was very tight and filled with mostly young families; The parent's eyes filled with a sense of panic to get out as fast as possible and make it to the bus/boat line. In front of them they cleared space with their cavalry of strollers. The three of us hugged the left side wall, slowly making our way in. Some relief after we emerged on the other side of the train station but not much.

Here's a video after the tunnel into a still crazy courtyard.

Finally a little space.

DSC01567-X4.jpg

Our sweet tooths kicked in so we headed here for a frozen treat...

DSC01569-X3.jpg

In hindsight, I wished we did go to Skipper's Canteen instead of Ohana.

DSC01570-X3.jpg

Sterg and Toni wanted to spend time in Tomorrowland. I bowed out and instead went to hunt for stable trashcans in Frontierland.

More broom paintings!

DSC01572-X4.jpg

Another trip using trashcans as tripod substitutes. I found a nice one on the boardwalk by the river that allowed me to fire off a 4 second exposure.

DSC01573-X4.jpg

Or two.

DSC01574-X4.jpg

Up until then, the heat and the crowds made me thankful I wasn't carrying my camera backpack and tripod but being on my own at night had me wishing the opposite. But we'll certainly make due of what we did have.

I unfortunately did not make it over to Tom Sawyer's Island this trip but I did capture a nice shot. This time with the camera on top of a post. It was pretty dark back there so a 15 second exposure was required...

UP NEXT - A photographic evening in Magic Kingdom continues and YiaYia living her best life in DHS!

From Tom Sawyers Island launch dock I wandered up to Big Thunder Mountain and secured a trashcan top. Out of the blue some "weird guy" shows up and basically stands right in front of my camera and starts looking around. He then turns and faces me and stares at me for a few moments. I smile back and look down and gesture to my camera. He doesn't move. I'm not budging however because I like the view from the top of my trashcan.

"Do you need to throw anything out?" I ask

Weird guy doesn't respond. He's just looking at me. After a few seconds of our optical show down he walks away - exactly 4 feet - and then stops and stares at the ride entrance.

OK - here's my chance. 15 second exposure already dialed in so I go with it...

The blurs you see in the photo are guests moving about.

DSC01581-X4.jpg

OK, not the greatest photo but I'll take it.

Weird guy started moving back towards me and my trashcan so I abandon my position and head back towards the water.

I found a beautifully flat post top and shot off this 30 second exposure of Tom Sawyer Island.

DSC01583-X4.jpg

I then found another angle...

DSC01584-X4.jpg

I was really enjoying myself at this point! I continued walking down the river side when I spotted a couple of rocking chairs under a small roof.

"Where did this come from?" I asked myself.

It was really dark and isolated there but I found a great spot to set up and started to dial in my settings...the atmosphere and challenge for me was perfect. Until, guess who shows up?

Yes - weird guy! Out of the water side darkness and slight mist he materialized and sat in one of the rocking chairs!

"OK, this is getting weird."

I looked around and observed that no one else was around in this dark corner of Magic Kingdom.

After a few moments of my imagination conjuring the plot of a murder mystery, weird guy arose from his chair and left the scene.

I decided to then move my position to frame the chairs from the front instead of the side. It was a good decision.

DSC01586-X4.jpg

I left the rockers and moved up closer to Big Thunder, drawn by the illuminated rock structures.

Here's a 30 second exposure.

and another. Man was I enjoying myself! The fun you can have with trashcans!

Thank you @lindawdw !

Every time I think I have a favorite pic you've taken you post another o_O

More to come!

These are postcard pretty!

Thanks!

Love those pics of Tom Sawyers Island at night, with the lights of Liberty Square behind it. It’s like a piece of calm surrounded by a frenzy.

As for the weird guy, he some reason reminds me of a Sims character. Just walking randomly with no purpose

And again love all of the photos that you got despite your creeper hanging out!

@fractal How much were the ILL's for Guardians??

I think there were around $10-11 a pop.

Did "Hi Weirdo Guy" become a phrase?

No but only because Toni and Alex were not there.

Here's part of a family text conversation from today discussing the teams Penn State and Clemson were playing which I called "donkeys".

Thanks @MickeyCB ! Kinda the last place you would expect to see someone like that - maybe he had a few too many at Skipper's Canteen.

That is seriously funny. Assuming of course you're not serious. 😝
