xPass

Anyone heard of this? Can't imagine how badly this could affect the lines in QS restaurants. I would imagine that the "x" will be replaced later with another name.

Watch out for xPass, a new form of Fastpass that will also work for dining reservations.

It will wholly depend on what and how it's issued and used.

I've never really ever had to wait in line for food at WDW - I usually eat early or late - but I am interested in the details.

The only time I can remember waiting an unbelievable amount of time is when I was unexpectedly in Anaheim for a conference (bought plane tickets 5 days prior, so I wasn't planning on going) in the first week of December 2010 and so I decided to visit Disneyland. Just trying to grab a bite to eat took well over an hour of a wait at the Carnation Cafe.

A tagline is what we are going to discuss? Disney already has a fastpass for food, it is called advance dining reservations. Anything else is going to be a complete cluster and blow up in tdo's face. I am not going to make a reservation for a sysco hamburger at american experience.

All speculation of course, but this does not fit the purpose of a "fastpass"

Fastpass does a few things, and many people miss the point. First it spreads the crowds out. Not by much, but it does move them around. But primarily fastpass is a program to ensure that you the guest have at least 1 chance per day to not have to wait in a long line for a headliner attraction. That is the reason why there is a 4 hour maximum wait time between fast passes. Fast pass does not function anything like universal's express pass.

It eliminates (or reduces) the customer service feedback of "I never ride _____ because the line is always so long." With fastpass you may have 6 fastpass rides to chose from, pick your favorite and you are almost guaranteed to get on with a minimal wait, at least for that one.

Some sort of fast pass system for QS would not seem to fit that. The only thing they might be able to do is use the system to spread out the rush over several hours. Something like the off hour discounts they give during really heavy times of the year.

When we were at Pecos Bill's last trip we had CMs asking if we wanted to wait on line to order from a person or if we wanted to use one of the touchscreens to order. May as well have said, "wanna wait in line or want to do it yourself? either way, the key to the world card gets swiped, just depends who does it."

We preferred doing it ourselves, and definitely enjoyed not waiting in line, only had to wait for the food to be ready.

Perhaps this is something that will be used to help ease the situation at some of the more in-demand, higher-end Table Service Resturants. I cannot really see what use this would be for a simple Counter Service option.

The fact that it mentions the forthcoming 'Be Our Guest' Resturant has me thinking it is something connected with the more popular places to dine. The places people go nuts for...Cindy's Table, Le Cellier, etc.

OR.......

Perhaps 'xPass' is a tool to try to help insure more walk-ups are accepted at said high-end, popular places? Hmm..that makes more sense, exspecially considering how TDO seems to now be aware of how Guests are not always overly keen on making dining reservations months before arrival. A 'xPass' could allot walk-ups a time to return..much like a FP does now for rides.

Hmmmm...interesting to consider. Will be more interesting to see what this actually turns out to be.

I see nothing in the post to indicate that it will be used for counter service restaurants. I guess I can see how it would be confusing since Be Our Guest is going to be quick service part of the day and table service at night.

My guess based on limited information is that it will be used to distribute last-minute available dining reservations that are currently available to walk-ups.

I would suspect that most people don't bother walking up for table service because they assume it's always going to be a long-shot. And while this is probably true in most cases, I know that one of the hosts of a podcast I listen to claims that he dines exclusively as a walk-up when at WDW. So there clearly is some availability.

I would also suspect that this leads to ever-so-slightly less than 100% occupancy of many popular (and expensive) restaurants, and to the extent that there are people in the parks who would gladly fill those slots if only they knew they were available, that represents money being left on the table.

Again, though, I'm just guessing.

What I really wouldn't be surprised to eventually see with something like this is a dual attempt to balance wait times and nickel and dime patrons.

I could easily envision a system where you're waiting in the standby line, but given an option for immediate entry into the FastPass line for a one-time "upgrade" charge for that attraction. Or a teaser for a free FastPass to some other attraction to take the burden off of the one you're waiting in line for.
