Anyone here volunteer time to their local for-profit (or not-for-profit-but-making-huge-bucks-for-the-executives) hospital? Think about it...

I’m thinking about it, and I’m thinking hospitals are usually non-profits that help save lives, and Disney is a for-profit company. So I’m thinking that’s a pretty ridiculous comparison.

Nope, couldn’t handle the secondhand smoke. ;)
You could have back then. We all did! I can remember being stuck in a car on a long trip. It was winter and the windows were closed and my father was a pipe smoker. I had that experience all though childhood and went the first hand route later for over 40 years, yet here I am 72 years later still upright and taking nourishment. Lucky? Yes, probably, but those people my age all went through that and surprisingly, just about everyone that I know is pretty healthy.

Don't get me wrong, I am not advocating for smoking, but just pointing out that some of the stuff we hear about today, seem contradictory to many of our lives experience. My grandmother actually started me smoking at age 12, but I've told my grandkids that if I find out they are smoking I will kick their butts until hell won't have it. Since they don't know what that means, so far, they have complied. :)

I believe that the for profit and the non profits are only secondary to the point. Either one has volunteers and either one saves lives. And non-profits also give ginormous amounts of money to the executives., so I don't see it as all that ridiculous. In fact, it seems to me that the non-profits have actually more flexibility in the ability to have cash to pay people to do the jobs that volunteers do. They charge the same prices and the don't have to pay taxes or stockholders.

The main purpose of a non-profit hospital is to help people and save lives, the main purpose of for-profit Disney is to make money. And these hospitals aren’t overflowing with money like you make it sound. But most importantly, do you honestly believe Disney and hospitals save comparable numbers of lives? They are not on the same plane of existence.

I feel bad that you’re still drinking the kool aid at your age.

What in the pluperfect hell does that have to do with what motivates people to volunteer. I guess I agree with you because I'm not sure that there is any comparison of motivation. I suspect that if the overriding mission of any hospital, be it profit or non-profit, isn't to help people and saves lives, I really don't think they would be in business very long.

You are talking about two different things. What they do with the money they make and how they make the money. That latter is the same in either. One had nothing to do with the other except in rare cases where there is corruption in the upper ranks. Both can pay people, but both accept free help. I'm not sure it is so criminal to willingly volunteer time to promote something they like. On top of that it is very likely that Disney does indeed give them many perks and that has a value as well. When was that last time a volunteer got a free appendectomy because they volunteered in the hospital.

There seems to be an over abundance of Kool Aid being passed around. You are trying to say that the only reason anyone would be motivated to volunteer would be if the place they are volunteering is saving lives. I don't drink anyone's Kool-Aid, I think that we are delving into something that is none of our business and you are trying to say that it is bad or shameful to volunteer for a profit place like Disney. In certain respects I am totally not willing to advertise for others. I won't buy any thing that sell shirts, or other articles with their logos blatantly printed or embossed on them. And being Disney fans how many of us do not own a Disney Themed T-shirts or the like, that we proudly wear out in public promoting Disney shamelessly. You pay for something and then give those companies free advertising to the world. At least Disney, the Mom things, are less widely seen by the masses. In some cases we have no choice, like with shoes, but other wise I won't do it. However, I don't care if you do or not, because it isn't any of my business.

Not at all; did you gloss over the first half of my statement about for-profit hospitals? And even if they're not-for-profit, check out this item from last Spring...

I actually use to work there for 19 years. I would not do it for free. If you are full time you have good benefits. College program gets the worst of it. I liked working there except during the holidays when it became extremely crowded. I worked in attractions at Mk, Epcot, and animal kingdom.
