Would you want a seasonal overlay to restore Pirates of the Caribbean to its original presentation?

Don’t the novels flesh out that the Wicked Wench is the Black Pearl? Jack won it and it was his ship until it sank. Jack struck a deal with Davy Jones to resurrect it (which leads to the events of Dead Mans Chest) and he rechristened it the Black Pearl upon its rebirth.
Novels? What are these "novels" you speak of? The ship always looked Pearlesque, but I didn't realize there was a backstory where one turns into the other. I dunno... seems like a lame tie-in to me. Just update the ride. Use some forced perspective they love so much and give us the bloody Pearl.

New redhead > the old one. The whole auctioning off the old one thing was a dumb joke. Just like the pirates chasing after the women (it's much funnier the other way around). The new red is funny, badass, and a welcome sight around the park. It's so much nicer having a feisty adventurer type for little girls to look up to.

About the only thing I have an issue with is Jack Sparrow and that's only because of the terrible way Disney's treated Johnny Depp.

I mean while I wasn't up in arms about red being added, I thought it was kinda dumb but I mean whatever -- I don't think it's funnier to see the women chasing the pirates rather than the pirates chasing the women. Definitely think it works better the other way around. Because the pirates are scummy guys. That's why they're pirates. The women chasing around the pirates on the other makes it light hearted, but I wouldn't call it "funny" it just makes it tonally inconsistent

Ideally I’d like to see them restore the original version of pirate’s to its rough, swashbuckling glory, and then build Shanghai’s version in the expansion pad behind the current version and call it “Jack Sparrow’s High-Seas Adventure.”

It’s crazy I know lol. The additions to the current version don’t do the movies justice, and simply muddle the original version of the ride. This leaves both camps upset. The purists want their original pirates back and the movie fans want to see the films better represented in a theme park attraction.

This would never happen but I feel like the current version, while very good, doesn’t quite satisfy the purists nor those who want to see the movies represented. It adds just enough from the movies to ruin it for the purists while still not adding quite enough to fully represent such great movies and make the film fans happy.

Insightful... truly. Sadly, never gonna happen. I think this belongs in the "What would I do if I owned Disney" thread. 😁 That's not the name of that thread, but a year ago or so I started a thread something like that. This would be a great addition to that thread. Realistically, not gonna happen. I think the ridership on the original version would be really low in comparison to the Shanghai version for a couple of reasons:
  1. The Shanghai version would have all the bells and whistles and the original version would just look old and tired in comparison.
  2. The "original" version could never exist because of the PC police. Pirates can't chase women, and women can't be sold at auction. I'm not saying those things are acceptable in today's world, but it was just more accurate in historical context.
  3. Sure, creating these two different versions would make most people happy, but since when has that been Disney's goal. I know you're young and probably couldn't answer with personal experience for anything more than the last few years, but the answer is, not since the 70s or 80s at best. Disney is a company like any other these days.... bottom line, and that's it. I'm not saying it should be anything more, but it used to be. The chance Disney does anything like this sadly is less than zero. I wish it were different.
Btw, I really do like your idea. It's an elegant solution that sadly will never happen for PotC, or any other ride that has a better original version. Test Track and Soarin come to mind. 😎

I think that would be kinda clumsy and require a lot of work. I've experienced the original ride only in WDW unfortunately not getting to see Disneyland's more fleshed out version. I remember at the end where Jack Sparrow is now used to be like some guys tied up and a bunch of gold. Come to think of it there was a lot of bondage in Disney back then. What's up with that?

I feel like Barbossa doesn't really deliver the lines right. Geoffrey Rush is a good actor but he seems to say "By thunder" in a way too casual manner. It should be BY THUNDER!!!!! not by thunder...

I also kinda feel like the plot makes less sense now, Are they after Jack Sparrow or the treasure? Why is the town defending a Pirate? Why are the pirates running a legitimate auction? Are those citizens getting paid for their old junk or are those pirates who stole stuff? Why did they add mermaids then take them out? So many questions! I feel like it doesn't detract from the ride as much as say TIANA'S BIG BAMBOOZLE BUY-YOU SOME FOOD SUPERMARKET ADVENTURE!'s lack of a villain for the drop, but it is kinda a headscratcher.

As for the auction scene I'm kinda mixed on it. It kinda made me uncomfortable growing up I thought it was too mean but at the same time it's one of those things that like made the ride darker and like the end of Splash Mountain, except the problem was that I always assumed those girls were tortured for the rest of their lives and killed when they got too old and that's kinda.......horrifying. Thankfully a bit of lore explains that the redhead actually becomes a sort of pirate captain later on in her life as seen in a picture at the begining of the Disneyland Version. The begining of the ride is actually meant to be a present day, and then you transition back to the pirate days. That's why in Disneyland there are so many dead pirates who were killed literally by their own greed when the cursed treasure turned them into corpses right where they stood. If you look at it that way, the current version of the Red Head seems to be RIGHT in line with the original story. This is just her later in life after showing her swashbuckling skills.

Bring back the talking pirate bird that was once at the entrance of the ride that I remember from about the mid-70s.
I actually remember that! It was still around in the 90s!

Of course, without the auction scene but it's something I thought about. Most people nowadays will never experience how the ride originally was. It would be fantastic to be able to experience it in its original glory as much as possible. As someone who pretty much only knows the Jack Sparrow version, I always wanted to experience the original ride. I also am talking about all the POTC versions throughout the world, except Shanghai of course.

In a way, I'm surprised Disney has never embraced this idea.

If Disney wanted people to see the original version, they would have never changed it in the first place.

I wonder why they removed it.
Apparently he created a bottleneck wherever he was. He initially was at the unload station, but that created a bottleneck with people stopping to watch him instead of going up the ramp. To solve this, they moved him to the front entrance, but that caused a bottleneck with people stopping to watch him instead of joining the queue. They decided to move him to one of the Disney stores before eventually scrapping him altogether. They should bring him back but put him in the queue itself or even at the very beginning or end of the ride. Put him somewhere that people are forced to keep moving so no more bottlenecks will form!

Not a bad idea. It could be like Potato Head

With Jack Sparrow you have to remember this was a hugely popular movie when it came out, as were the sequels. Although they weren't as well reviewed. But if you never went on this ride you would be expecting to see Jack Sparrow there. At least in some form. He is in there enough but not too much that it takes away from the original ride. The mood is still basically the same.
This. I've experienced the pre-Jack version at both MK and DL, and the reality is Jack doesn't really change the ride much. Certainly not the feel of it. Removing the redhead was more of an impact than sticking Jack in a barrel and crap like that.

Yup. Also, the original ride would be almost 50 years old.
Change is good. Change keeps things fresh, it allows new generations to have links to the experience.
Change can be good, but it can also be bad. Depends on why the change came about. Did something need to be changed or was the change shoehorned in to placate some phantom need.
