World Showcase's Mountain Range That Never Was

I remember not too long ago there was another concept art showing WS with a mountain range all around it. There was a train that ran through the mountain and had stops in a few countries.

Personally, I don't think I would have done mountains either. Everything else in the world showcase is so realistic and I fear that adding a fake mountain in the backdrop would take away from that.

Animal Kingdom disagrees with you.

Epcot, circa 1996:
"You know what people want....MORE THRILL RIDES!"
"Okay so, how about we revisit the plans for Mt. Fuj---"
"Are you INSANE? NOBODY would ride THAT!"
"You do realize the Matterhorn at Disneyland is still highly popular, right?"
"But the Matterhorn is QUAINT. No, what we need is....I'VE GOT IT! Let's demolish Horizons and build a gravitron!"
"Uh....sir? Gravitrons will only attract a certain type of rider."
"Yes! The EXTREME rider! Teenagers will LOVE IT!"
"But what about families?"
"EXTREME! WE WANT EXTREEEEME!!!!"
*sigh* "I hate you , sir."

Ehh, count me in as one of those who prefers World Showcase to have a consistent skyline. Having all countries with 60-80' foot building heights, and then having Japan over there with its 200' tall roller coaster mountain, would just throw off the feel and message of World Showcase too much.

Additionally, most of the country seem to be based on cultural experiences rather than DAK-style faux-natural environments. I prefer it that way.

Not that I wouldn't LOVE to see some new additions to World Showcase in the form of new countries, though.

I can't argue with this too much. At least I'd much rather have Horizons back since it was gone before my first trip, and after reading all about it it seems like it's something I'd be pretty into.

I just want to see some attractions, any attractions, put into the large Japan and Germany buildings. Preferably some sort or dark rides, no matter what ride systems they choose.

What is inside those huge buildings? Are they just large empty rooms?

Does the fact that these structures were built to begin with mean that the rides were scrapped last minute 1981-1982?

I know for Japan that an indoor roller coaster was originally intended to go with the pavilion but was scrapped. I don't know about Germany exactly, it could be back stage for the Biergarten.

The show building for the Rhine River was never built. That big box is the Biergarten.

The "box" on the left is Biergarten. The "box" to the right was to be Rhine Rivers queue and load area. This was built as a shell. The ride building was to go behind it.

For a few years afterwards the flume pathway was still left in the concrete floor. Eventually Biergartens kitchens were rearranged and took the space over along with offices.

Originally the Japan show building was built for the Carousel Theatre show Meet the World. Mt Fuji came along in the late 80s.

Today it still stands as a large empty hanger, a tribute to all the phase twos that never happened. It has been used for storage, rehearsal space, workshops and office space over time.

WS Phase 2? Can you elaborate on this or share a link?

EPCOT Center had plenty of phase two projects. Once Horizons was open phase one was considered complete. There were many phase two plans - Rhine River, Italian Gondolas, The Seas, Costa Rica, Africa. The list goes on. Finances, politics, sponsorship and finances (again) all conspired to change things.

Not to be confused with the list of seriously proposed EPCOT Center projects that would take me an hour to write.

(Not quite an hour)
